Pitch accuracy. Easy you can be pretty far above or below... that window for error gets smaller and smaller per difficulty.

Basically, If you are Ozzy or Dickinson, go Expert.

At the Rock Band tour, my friend who is a decent singer tried In Bloom on expert vocals and failed out 3 times by the 2nd verse of the song. It's really hard you have to be dead on.

i was pretty much able to clear all the songs on medium difficulty, and a couple of the easier ones on hard (vaseline and say it ain't so i believe), but just as a test i tried out Main OFfender on hard and failed miserably. so its pretty tough, i can only imagine the precision required for expert.

i got 99% on vasoline on hard. i was a bit shocked to see that. not sure if i'll be back to play the demo at best buy before release, but if i do grab the mic again, i will definately try again on expert. i only picked songs that were in my range as i did not want to make a fool of myself with complete strangers standing around or walking by.

That's surprising to hear anyone would fail that song at any difficulty level. The singer of the band can barely carry a tune himself... Seems like anyone should be able to nail that loud, irritating, clumsy vocal.

Man, you have a real hard-on against garage rock. Those vocals are killer - coming from a proud 50 year lineage of ass-kicking barnstorming rock bands - screw that wussy perfect-notes choir-boy crap!

It is important to remember that, at a certain point, you're not *just* singing the song anymore. You're actually being rated on how you sing the song compared to the recording.
If the recording doesn't start on beat, or pitches up/down for a musical accent, then ideally you have to start exactly at the same time, and pitch exactly the same way at the same time. Even if it is a lame choice. Even if it sounds bad.
Thus, on expert, it is almost like you're playing "Vocal Impression" rather than "Rock Band". How well can you sing the song *precisely* the way it is on the recording?
You might have a better voice than the original artist. You might have more musicality. Your voice might have more vibratto. Your musical accents might be more insightful, and your choices might be more powerful and dynamic, and play off the other instruments in a better fashion.
But to get the best score, it doesn't matter. You'd best sing it as if ... well, as if you weren't you!
Frankly, I think that there are a lot of good singers who are going to be frustrated with the game, forcing themselves to sing "like the original" in an attempt to get the best score possible, and recognizing the limitations of the system. Think about how frustrating it'll be for semi-pro singers when the teeny boppers score better than they do, because they're used to singing along *precisely* with their recordings, and thus they'll score perfectly!
Me, I'm going to keep the setting on "medium" at parties and just let people have a good time!

I had no problem improvising when singing, but then again I was on medium.

I tried singing on hard today at Best Buy. I can sing, but I got my butt kicked. I think it will be fun trying to do perfect imitations and it may even help my singing ability in some way, but I honestly prefer what BodhiWolff describes and being able to put my own personal stamp on a song when I sing in front of other people.

Nothin wrong with garage rock, but Main Offender is pretty damn annoying.
