View Full Version : Confirmed Rock Band Bar Nights

So, there's been lots of speculation about "Rock Band as the new Karaoke", and what not, but now, we're ready to begin confirming actual Rock Band Bar Nights. I'll start with:

Living Room Lounge, Brooklyn, NY (5th Ave. and 23rd St.; take the R to the 25th St. stop), 7:00 PM, Sundays. They currently do Guitar Hero nights, and importantly, use an XBox 360 copy of the various games. I went to their GH night tonight, it was a lot of fun, I highly recommend it.

Post your local bar planning a Rock Band night here!

I just put these on one my started threads but wanted to add it here since the heading is more appropriate:
Here's a place in New York, NY:

Ground Kontrol in Portland is Tuesday nights 9-Midnight. For those not in the know it is a retro arcade with a beer and wine bar. Tons of fun (we kicked off my bachelor party there last year). A friend and I are going to check it out after our bowling league this week, he said they have suffered from low turnout so far, but added that they have purchased all of the available DLC.

I'm trying to get one going at a local coffee shop that a friend works for. They often have guitarists, bands, and karaoke.

I'm willing to loan my equipment for one night to encourage them to purchase their own copy but the big hold up has been the lack of their owning a TV large enough (I say at least 42") to handle the game so all the players can see.

This would be in the Historic section of Glendale, AZ.

The link for the New York one is broken. Oh, and the Living Room Lounge in Brooklyn continues to do Rock Band nights every Sunday.

Another Portland Note:

Game Crazy (Cedar Hills BLVD) is having a Rock Band tourney Jan 26th

Garlic Jim's Pizza (Hall + Nimbus) is having a Rock Band tourney March 8th ($100 gift certificate to Game Crazy + $50 gift certificate to Garlic Jim's to number one band)

All PORTLANDERS please come and either compete or give your support to College Drop-Outs!!!

Hey RyBu...thanks for the update! Do you know who the point of contact is for this March 8th tourney? My 'band' isn't that good but I think it'd be totally fun to compete and to increase the awareness of RB! (Plus we get to check out the DropOuts in person ;) )

Assuming you're from Portland, OR...

They opened up a new Garlic Jim's on Hall+Nimbus. They had a GH3 easy/med tourney today (haha of course we won both tourney's, smashing the dreams of 10 year old soccer teams... and got a total of $50 garlic jims certs, and $60 at game crazy),

Next week is the hard/expert tourney. You still have time to enter and play, and all the details will be ready. Give them a call and they will tell you all the details for the March 8th RB tourney. You ARE from portland right?

That seems about as much fun as stealing sacks of candy from kids on Halloween. If I was running a tourney with prizes I'd restrict entry to one skill level so everyone got a fair shot at winning something. You don't feel dirty?

Difficulty without every difficulty represented and the ability to screen out ringers is pretty poor way to run a tourney. Maybe difficulty and age brackets would work if you don't want some huge tourney going on and on and on.

Why wouldn't the people hosting it just pull obvious ringers aside and pay them off with a free meal (or just drop them entirely) I can't imagine. I'm sure those "10 year old soccer teams" will long remember that place as, "the place where we went to play GH and those older kids F'ed it up."

Seeing as how the whole deal would be to have a tourney for fun and some advertising sounds like a total flop for most people involved.

Ok, so we should have let the kids win because of their age? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. How bout we let female compete in the NBA, and let the pros of the Special Olympics compete in the true Olympics. Because they were kids, they should get gift certs?

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life. It's called competition... Youtube the eight year old who can 100% almost every song on GH2 and tell me age matters. It's a talent you work on, and I'm not going to give hand outs to little cry baby *****es.

If the host woulda asked us to sit, we wouldn't have played, but nobody cared. One little snot nosed brat did TFAF and cried because he didn't win, so the host of the tourney gave him $30 gift cert to Game Crazy..... I suppose you think that's how it should be handled huh... give the cry baby *****es free ****, let them win tourney's because their age.... baby them? Wrong

We're still talking about the easy/medium difficulty here, right? What you did is like LeBron James going back to play in a high school game or Carl Lewis running sprints in the Special Olympics, not the silly analogies you made.

ps: I blame the organizer not you for chasing easy money.

Yeah, it just doesn't seem right that there would be none of these in the city wherein our Savior of Faux Rock and Roll was born. I would love to go to one, but for some reason Boston seems behind on this trend (even with GH).

I blame the organizers on this one...but this happens when it's probably the first competition they've done. We don't the context of what happen and there could have easily been other 'ringers' there too. The 'college dropouts' just happen to be singled out.

But I think good sportsmanship comes into play here. If I knew I was blowing away the competition, I would have just gave all or part of the prize winnings to the runner up in the spirit of the event. Nobody wants to walk away from this type of special event with any sense of negativity. Anything to increase the likelihood of them continuing future competitions is what it's all about right? Anyway, we're all playing Monday morning quarterback in this situation.

But in regards to the Portland, March 8th event, we'd be coming from north of Vancouver, WA. OR is it just restricted to Portlanders?

Tarzanman
01-14-2008, 01:46 AM
Sportsmanship? Lol, what in the world can you mean by that? There is very little 'how you play the game' as far as Rock Band/GH competitions go... you compete as an individual and the highest score wins... period. Its not like soccer where you actively interact with your opponents (which makes etiquette or 'sportsmanship' important)

So yes, maybe the OP needs to get a life if he is boasting about beating 4th graders at a video game, but I don't think he's under any obligation to hold back either.

Its a pure form of competition. Five buttons on the controller, being 8 yrs old or 28 yrs old will not give you any appreciable advantage as far as playing the game.

The organizers are stuck. Any prizes they give out is money they won't get, which is why they opted for a single $60 of store credit. More tiers = more prizes = more money they won't get

Dude...if you're going to play in the hard/expert tourney, don't cherry pick the easy/medium one. If I was management, I would not let you enter both...give the beginners a break...

Gryffindor

I really don't think age is relevant. I'm an adult and can't play like my 12 year old daughter does (5 stars - some gold) on Expert.

I wouldn't discount the younger ones when it comes to expertise on these games.

As for entering a easy/med tourney when you know your skills are higher that's really not fair. But, then again, it's sometimes harder for Hard/Expert players to drop down to Easy/Med as they are used to playing a completely different way.

Now, could we please get this topic back on track with listings of places that are having RB Nights?

I think that if Rybu and his bandmates want to go play guitar hero, and maybe win some prizes, regardless the difficulty then thats all good. I've played gh since the 1st one, and i still can't do alot of expert songs. If I was good, I wouldn't want people to know that only on leaderboards, that's whole point of guitar hero to be portrayed as a rock star, so why wouldn't you want a crowd of people watching you play. Guaranteed, there were probably more people there impressed then crying like babies. My point is it's a competition, nobody who plays guitar hero will be stuck at easy or medium if they actually play/played the game. I'm tired of this everybody gets a present B.S

If you live in the Washington DC, NoVA, MD area there will be a RB night IN Woodbridge VA coming in about 2weeks.

The Hard-Times Cafe in Woodbridge, VA Does a Guitar Hero night every Friday starting at 9pm till about 1am. I have spoken to the owner of the company that does the GH night about doing a RB night.

As of right now Im going to try to get it on Fridays till we can do it another night. The game will be played on the 360 and with two Les Paul (As I do not want to damage my 2ND Fender) drums and Mic.

The owner did say that eventually he would like to have a "Battle of the Bands" but he needs to have bands pre-made. So for the first few nights it would just be 'jam-bands' of random bar goers with 'my' band as the 'house' band.

So I will update as soon as I get more details...(AIM me if you want more info..."Huronblakhart")

Went to the Ground Kontrol night at Portland tonight, sang and drummed a few songs and had fun before the booze kicked in and bombing out on bass at the end of a Metallica song.

All in all a good time. Next time I will stick to singing if I am going to drink.

I will be hosting the 1st official "Rock Band Night" at a local karaoke bar here in Denver. It will be at Park Center Lounge and Grill, 12011 North Pecos St. Westminster, CO on Wednesday 1/30 starting at 8:00 pm. Regular karaoke will be available also. This is not a contest so all skill levels are welcome. If your in the Denver area please bring your "band" and show your support. Rockband will be set up on the stage with 2 large flat panel monitors for "the band" and a large TV behind the stage for the audience while the incredible sound system pumps out the music! Post up here if you have any questions. Hope to see you there!! :D

Hi, I'm the host. Just posted our event on the Event Calendar. Hope some of you will be able to make it. Please tell your friends in NorCal.

Cheers,

Adam

Here's the jist (in re-post form) of what we're doing:

Verily, We Shall Rocketh!

Calling all bands and groupies to Northern California's original and unofficial Rock Band Night!

Cost is free, of course the bar and kitchen appreciate your patronage, and this will in turn allow us to rock on!

We set up Rock Band on the High Def, and you and your friends go to it. It's really that simple.

Signups (done Karaoke style) begin at 8:30 pm. Performaces begin at 9 pm.

We have most of the packs, including the recently added Oasis pack and the Monkees' Last Train to Clarksville.

No Cover (tips accepted... I mean, c'mon). 21+. P. Wexford's is located at 3313, McHenry Ave., Modesto, CA. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=3313+McHenry+Ave.,+Modesto&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=26.853167,58.710937&ie=UTF8&z=17&iwloc=addr&om=0)

Please PM me if you want to be added as a collaborator or if you know of an event location to be added.

This is a published map, so you should be able to find it by doing a search on google maps.

I'm off to do the dishes.

Looking for people in the Seattle area to team up and perhaps do a Rock Band hosting night rotation and perhaps team up to be a driving force to lobby for one of the area's facilities(whether it be a bar, arcade, wow GameWorkz would be awesome) It's awesome with friends and all but it's obvious there's a bit of difference in Rock Band interest levels. :) Anything between Seattle and Tacoma is fine.

So PM me if you have any ideas! We can't have Portland(Ground Kontrol) have all the fun! After all, we're actually one of the few US cities that are ACTUALLY on the Rock Band map...

...hmmmm, perhaps we're too busy making real music to bother having Rock Band nights for us psuedo bands? ;)

I usually keep my instruments/controllers pretty clean (after every Rock Band Night), especially the mic. Besides, I'm sure there are much more "germs" on every day door handles then what is on the the drum sticks and guitars. Everybody uses the door handle, but only a few people will actually play Rock Band in a night ;)

Anyone in the Las Vegas Valley have a spot to play? So many of these games were sold here I'm sure something is going on.. I would love to play with a full band of deticated rocks.. I let the kids in the complex come over and play with me, they being 17-19 is not fun. They are inhibited or something and don't really rock out.. Witch sucks becuase I want to play drums and always end up singing the songs.

I own a bar in Dallas, and we've been planning a GH tournament here for a while. I'd love to have a RB tournament here (especially if officially sponsored, like Red Octane does for GH), but I'd hate to have my personal instruments screwed up.

Id be much more interested in a karaoke style night instead of a tournament.

As for sponsorship and your instruments, Id guess that if promoted far enough ahead of time to the RB community, you'd get a full house of beer drinking, rockstar wannabe's and that might offset the risk of trashing the $180 RockBand pack.

I dont know much about running this type of event or a bar for that matter, but if you run a non-competitive RockBand night, please post the event here!

Cheers!

Just a reminder (and a bump), this is goin' on tonight! Come by and have some fun. (By the way, why isn't this thread a sticky or it's own catagory of some sort?)

I emcee Ground Kontrol's Rock Band night; thanks for adding it to the map! I'd like to ask for one change: could you make our entry search for "Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade," so our full Google Maps listing comes up? Thanks!

We run every Tuesday night, 9PM-1AM, using real mic and guitar stands, drum throne, carpet to hold the drum kit, sound and video monitors for the band, stage lights, and a 16' wide projection screen and big PA for the audience. Song books are sorted by Artist, Title, and Difficulty, contain all DLC, and are updated every week.

Full info: myspace.com/rockbandtuesdays (http://www.myspace.com/rockbandtuesdays)

I also sing lead vocals in the "house" band, Mario Speedwagon. :D We dress like our avatars and perform real cowbell and tambourine parts, and encourage you to do the same!

To anyone who's attended one of these....How are the instruments holding up to bar use?

.
We stopped in at MTV in Manhattan and played a little Rock Band. The the strum bars were broken on the guitars and the foot pedal was broken on the drums.

I think when we go to Brooklyn I'll take my own and leave them in the car just in case I need them

The Werehouse listing in Richmond, VA is inaccurate. The Werehouse is actually in Winston-Salem, NC, not Richmond. The street address is correct, but the city/state is wrong.

I've corrected the entry for the Werehouse... I usually take Google at face value, so the response is necessary. That venue sounds like a lot of fun... kinda like the McMenimens <sp> thing they have in the Pac NW.

FYI: Tonight is my RB Night in Modesto, CA. Starts at 9:00, goes to 11:30 ish.

You can, of course, find it on the map.

That seems about as much fun as stealing sacks of candy from kids on Halloween. If I was running a tourney with prizes I'd restrict entry to one skill level so everyone got a fair shot at winning something. You don't feel dirty?

Yea we just had a tournament for GH3 at our school with everyone put into certain classes.

Expert won $50 to best buy
Hard won $30
and Medium won $10

I'm in charge of music/events at a coffeeshop in Santa Cruz and I was thinking about having a Rock Band night. Do you guys just set up the gear and say, "Have at it," or do you have sign-up sheets for individual instruments, or what? How long do they usually go for? Is 2 hours too short? How do you advertise? Do you flyer, or word of mouth, or what?

BriGuy

In Boston, river gods (in cambridge) has been doing nights. You might even catch an hmx developer or two there!

ROCK,
JD

PS. Will post more details when I get them about the above!

Sweet. I'm going to have to check that out. Do you know which nights they do it?

I called and they said they do Rock Band nights the last Tuesday of every month. I haven't been there yet, but I plan to go on Feb 26th (that feels sooooo long from now)
The girl I spoke to said you can show up with a band and play or they will team you up with whoever is there and play. I'm not sure or not whether it is a competition or any prizes or anything. But I think the chance to play Rock Band in public with a bunch of other drunken fools (some of which may be Harmonix devs) is prize enough. Count me in!

Every last Tuesday night of the month (That means tonight!)

It's sponsored by Dewars (scotch whiskey) and Harmonix folks will be there tonight!! Also the Boston Globe is supposed to show up as well to cover the event in the newspaper.

I'm not sure if it's a competition or just a get together. I'll be showing up without a band, so hopefully some other people will be there to join me. I play guitar/bass on expert and drums/vocals on hard. Seeya there!

I'm hosting Rock Band nights in Salt Lake suburbs and in Lehi and Provo, Utah every Sunday through Wednesday.
I haven't got enough players yet to fully justify a "Rock Band" night, so I have built it around my karaoke shows.

Sunday (All Ages)
Midvale, Utah
Tracy's Pool Hall
8-12

Monday (21 & Over)
Midvale, Utah
The Rock Bottom
9-1

Tuesday (21 & Over)
Lehi, Ut
The Big Easy
9-1

Wednesday
Provo, Ut
Atchafalaya's
9-1

If you are local to any of those nights. . . come out and see us. We could use your support!
As soon as it gets big enough we want to do Battle of the Bands tourneys.

So long as the bar you are playing in is paying his ASCAP/BMI you have nothing to worry about. There should be a sticker on the door saying that they are a paying member. That covers any live music, (or canned) played in the establishment.

One word...WOW!

These guys are taking rock Band night to another level. Not your typical bar setup where your back is to the crowd like you're playing at home. You're actually on stage, facing the crowd while you're playing to a projection of the game. Bring your A game when you go and get your number in early to give you a better chance of playing.

There are two North Jersey events that I know about.

Wednesdays 9 PM at Dexter's in Riverdale, NJ - Kareoke and Rock Band (they switch back and forth)

Mondays 9 PM at Just Jakes in Montclair, NJ - Rock Band/GH III tournament (This just had its debut week this past Monday...competition was very light, we need more people to come down to this one as they did a poor job of advertising it - it's not even listed as an event on the website)

Both places are bars/clubs so you need to be over 21.

Just letting everyone know: Due to declining interest, the event in Modesto at P. Wexfords is officially kaput. Thanks to everyone in the online community and in CA that helped us to 'live the dream', if only for awhile. It was fun while it lasted. I will be taking the event off the map today.

I really hope they'll catch onto this idea in my small corner of NC, I'm thinking of sending a message to the local bar/club in town asking if they'd be interested in doing something like that during the week, I would love getting involved in tourneys, with or without prizes, I'd just like some various competition sometime.

So I live pretty close to OC and managed to get a friend to join me for a couple drinks to see the kind of talent we would be playing with at a couple spots that had confirmed Rock Events on Monday night. First stop, Chronic Cantina in Costa Mesa. Great venue. Cheap drink specials. Hot bartenders. The game was turned off after 30 minutes of no crowd participation. The employess didn't even do a song to get things started. Next stop, The Alley in Newport Beach. Rock Event there no longer exists. Four people in the bar and it was no longer hooked up. Last stop, Malarkey's in Newport Beach. CLOSED for the night! I was hoping there'd be a spot closer to me that had the same energy and support that Hyperion in LA does, but they've been doing this since Guitar Hero. Apparently, there can be only one. Lol

After going to Ole's medium Rare on wednesdays for the last three weeks I have seen A steady increase in players and watchers over that time. I will admit their first night was rough but they are in it for a good time...which is fine with me. Food is good, drinks aren't watered down (least mine weren't) and it's confirmed that with increased intrest that the bar will start Bar band battles. So if you live in the portland OR area and looking for a ROCK BAND venue then here ya go. See ya there!

I've posted this information on the web previously in a few places, but for some reason never thought to go straight to the source with it. So, for those of you in the Chicagoland area, let me tell you places you can go play Rock Band 7 nights a week!

(Note: while it may look like it, this is not a listing of "every" Rock Band event in the Chicagoland area. Just the ones my company [LK Entertainment] hosts. All shows are all-ages karaoke/DJ/non-competitive Rock Band shows unless otherwise noted)

MONDAYS:
Fox & Hound - Bloomingdale, IL (on Army Trail Rd just east of Gary Ave.) - 9pm-2am - 21+, only one Monday a month for now, and that Monday varies, so contact the bar for more info. Their contact information can be easily googled.

TUESDAYS:
Muldoon's - Wheaton, IL (downtown, on the corner of Front St. & Hale) - 9pm-1am
Heroes West - Joliet, IL (on Houbolt Rd just north of I-80) - 9pm-2am - 21+ after 10pm

WEDNESDAYS:
Buffalo Wild Wings - Warrenville, IL (on Diehl Rd. near Winfield, across from the AMC 30 Cantera movie theatre) - 9pm-1am - depending on sport schedules (specifically Cubs night games), show may start later than 9pm

THURSDAYS:
Muldoon's - Wheaton, IL (downtown, on the corner of Front St. & Hale) - 9pm-1am
Wicker Well - Chicago, IL (Wicker Park neighborhood, on North Ave. just west of Ashland) - 9:30pm-2am - 21+

FRIDAYS:
Ranked - Plainfield, IL (downtown, on Des Plaines Ave. between Lockport & Main Streets) - 9pm-2am - 21+, 2-person Rock Band League starts June 20th (contact the bar at Rankedamerica.com for more info)

SATURDAYS:
Ranked - Plainfield, IL (downtown, on Des Plaines Ave. between Lockport & Main Streets) - 9pm-2am - 21+, any-sized Rock Band League starts June 21st (contact the bar at Rankedamerica.com for more info)

SUNDAYS:
Ranked - Plainfield, IL (downtown, on Des Plaines Ave. between Lockport & Main Streets) - 3pm-8pm - we may run past 8pm, but the bar goes 21+ after then, so the all-ages timeframe is the only scheduled timeframe. No competitions scheduled...yet...

More info on the events in general...

All shows are run with a 500 watt (or more) professional sound system, with stage televisions guaranteed to have no lag. We patch into house video systems so the audience can follow the screen, but do not recommend play using those TVs, as we cannot independently calibrate for lag. Drum pads and pedal are protected with measures designed to maximize durability without affecting gameplay. Systems are Playstation 3, with 2 Rock Band Stratocaster guitar peripherals available at each show. Microphones are pro-audio-quality wireless systems modified to work seamlessly with Rock Band while bypassing any in-game processing delay, resulting in "echo". Rock Band performances are interwoven with karaoke performances using state-of-the-art electronic "songbooks" and an automated rotation management system, ensuring everyone, singer and player alike, is allowed to perform equally. During the League events at Ranked (Fri & Sat), an additional stage is set up exclusively for Rock Band performance as well, using a home-theater sound system, lag-free TV, and standard USB microphone. As of today we currently have all available DLC for every one of our systems, and will continue to upkeep with future DLC, patches, expansions, etc.

If anyone has any further questions, I can be reached at Jason@liquidkourage.net. Please put "Rock Band event question", or something similar, in the subject, because I receive about 100 junk emails a day, and I wouldn't want to accidentally miss an important one.

I used to work at a place called Latitude. It's on 8th Ave btwn 47th and 48th st. in Manhattan. I started Rockband there and now I don't work there anymore but they still do it. After a pretty tough summer I think it's going to start to pick up. They are going to buy Rockband 2, I think and it should be pretty good. I told them to at least. Pretty good stop and not too busy so you can get good time in . It's on the third floor and completely dedicated to Rockband.

Post your local bar planning a Rock Band night here!they used to have a bar like that around here. it was called RANKED GAMING LOUNGE. boy did that crash and burn. they claimed to have two stages where the bands comepeted. it was a dj setup in the corner with his huge speakers blasting one song, while the band on the "other stage" tried to play. you could hardly hear the music. haha

Yeah, hi. I'm the guy who ran those events. Ever wonder how you make Rock Band a live entertaining experience? Step 1 is "turning the volume to 11". You know what you CAN'T do? Do that on 2 setups simultaneously in the same small acoustically-unfriendly room.

So, you gut a 5-channel receiver system from your own living room, strategically set up the speakers so that each player has a personal monitor, turn up the volume as far as possible, brand the 2nd area a "side stage", and hope for the best. See, we wanted to do something crazy, you know, like let a bunch of bands play all night without waiting an hour or 2 between songs.

Oh, and there were 14 Xbox 360s and Wiis set up in the room too, running simultaneously, and limited room to set up much of anything. Despite all that, every night we were there the bar approached capacity and it was us alone that kept the bar afloat as long as it was. Oh, and we held 3 different Rock Band competitions that gave away a few thousand dollars with no entry fee. But if you have a better idea, be my guest. Me, I'm a professional entertainer with a few thousand shows under my belt. But you? You're "The Smoking Blunts"! I rest my case.

Bring your friends and a strong desire to wail. 21 and up, cash only at the bar but an ATM is located by the entrance. Prize varies each week.

We will be starting Rock Band nights on Wednesdays in May at "It's Vegas Baby!" located in the Blue Chip casino in Michigan City. Of course it is free to participate and hopefully we will be able to develop a strong following and eventually give away "rockstar treatment" in the casino/hotel/spa and even trips to Las Vegas. Check us out online or on facebook:
