Is Rush not played on the radio, or Bowie, or the Police, or Metallica? How about Sabbath, or Boston, or KISS?

As for mainstream hate... it's just a part of it. There's mainstream hate. There's hate for little-known bands. There's classic hate. There's new music hate.
And even... *sheds a tear*... Rush hate.

I hate fall out boy, but I like there music. But I don't like bands like rush, metallica, and slayer at all. I'm really weird when it comes to music. I like a lot of genres but only some songs. I like ride the lightning and working man, but I don't like any other song by them same with other bands, but honestly who doesn't?

Maybe they're conjoined twins... you don't know! =p
What gets my goat, not that I have a goat, is people who don't know the difference between there, their, and they're (re: the poster above me who likes 'there music'), or we're and were or your and you're... or people who claim that they do know, and just don't care.
Also, I agree with the OP in that it annoys me when people hate any band that more than 10 people have ever heard of... especially when it's a band they used to like, but the band went 'mainstream' or 'commercial' so now they suck.

There is a strong difference between saying a band sucks and saying you don't like a band. To say a band sucks is to say that, musically, they don't know what the hell they are doing. Clearly by their success (what is it, 24 gold, 14 platinum records?) and by just listening to them, they do know what they are doing (damn it, especially Neil Peart), and thus do not suck.
You can say you don't like a band all you want. Saying they suck is entirely different.

um, there's an incredibly massive difference between someone hating on a popular band and someone hating on a band simply because they are "successful and/or mainstream".

That's one of the things that gets me. Someone can say they dislike a band all day and I won't mind. But when someone says that a band sucks (even a band I personally dislike [though this is not the case with Rush, I love Rush]) it really, and I quote, "gets my goat."
My favourite is when someone likes a band only until other people discover it. I never understood that.
Some people don't like to share I guess.

Really? The statement seemed pretty evident to me.
The point is, you are seeing people who don't care for mainstream acts and YOU are presuming the reason is that those people are mad that those acts are popular and thus hate them. YOU are the one making that deduction, though. Thus precluding the possibility that some individuals simply don't like those bands. You're creating a straw man by inventing an argument no is making just to dismiss that argument. What you're actually doing is dismissing the musical tastes of anyone who is different from you by assuming they couldn't validly dislike those bands. Instead, you insist on ulterior motives and decide to refute those imagined ulterior motives instead of actually making a case for why someone should like those bands.

I don't hate popular music.
Popular music hates me. Er.
I hold a grudge against what gets played on radios around here because it prevents people from listening to older music, which I do like. (Really? You guys hear Boston and Rush? I hear Nickelback and Daughtry.) Since people don't listen to the music that I like, I can't really talk about music with people. Because I don't really like the music that they like, either. I hate keeping up with trends, because that's what music is. People don't have any favourite songs, or bands, really. They like the new stuff by bands that have songs on the radio.
"Have you heard the song from their new CD" doesn't imply that they bought anything. They downloaded the songs that they heard from the radio, TV, movies... It's all just popular stuff.
I had a conversation with my friend a couple days ago. It went something like this.
Her: "My friends say I like guy music."
Me: "Guy music; really? I've never really heard of 'guy' music. I can see 'girl' music, but guy music makes me think of something that sounds like the guy smoked a pack of cigarettes before singing. Like Motorhead or something."
Her: "lol you're like the only guy I know that listens to hard rock and stuff. My friends and I mostly listen to Daughtry or FOB or Three Days Grace."
Me: "That's guy music? Wow."
Apparently, if it's not a girl singing a sappy love song, it's guy music. According to her friends, at least. It's almost sad, but how many of you really feel all MACHO while singing Dead On Arrival?
That kind of stuff is associated with masculinity now. Anything from the 90's would be considered classic (but not in the good way), and 80's or older are just "old". Pfffffft.
She also refused to listen to anything that came out before 2003.
Anyways, more on topic. I don't really hate new music that much. Some of it isn't that bad; I'm open to just about everything. Panic At The Disco is catchy (not that I like it, I hate most of their songs, but they are catchy), I like Nickelback's Savin' Me, and I usually don't mind half the songs I hear on the radio.
But I need to go to places that play more than country music and new hits. :(

People hate on bands because they started as something great, then BECAME mainstream (for more pay, which can make sense at times) and their musical quality halved. *cough* Metallica *cough*.
And people also hate when bands sellout (again, for more pay...) *cough* Kiss *cough*.

First sentence and second sentence contradict themselves. Even if they liked them before they became mainstream, they may hate them because they are mainstream now. Therefore, they hate them because they are mainstream.
However, this is my take on this whole hating bands because of their status thing. Some people just want to be different. They want to feel special. They want to think they know about something that someone doesn't know about. Then when other people find out about them, they lose interest because now everyone is listening to them and omg they are on the radio now!!
They claim things like:
Oh their music isnt as good now.
They sold out.
They lost their uniqueness.
All their songs sound the same now.
When, in all actuality, they refined their music to appeal to a broader audience.
Don't get me wrong. I am not saying there is anything wrong with liking the cutting edge stuff or rough stuff. However, a very small portion of people, just automatically do this: oh its mainstream... its crud thing.
As far as I know, I have only met one person that was like this in the past 10 years. His taste was stupid. Basically, if they had music and it wasn't on the radio, he listened to it. As soon, as he found out somehow they became popular, because he didn't listen to the radio, he ditched their stuff.
What it boils down to is this. It's stupid to say whether you like a band because of whatever status they have. Either you like the sound or you don't. However, be honest in your determination and don't base it off whether it is played on the radio or how many fans they have(or lack thereof). That's certainly no way enjoy music.

Well, I certainly think a group's/artist's songs can change to cater to the 'mainstream needs' or, more accurately, what the music industry thinks the mainstream needs. I don't believe it is hypocritical to dislike the change that will occur in their music to get mass market sales.
That's what people are saying when they say that people may not dislike someone for being mainstream in and of itself (i.e. if their music did not have to adapt they would be fine with it), but dislike them because they went mainstream, with all the necessary modifications that went with it.
I think also a factor in this phenomenon is just plain nostalgia and/or dislike of change in the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" catagory. Some people may love to point out the awesomeness of their favorite band when they get popular and get let down as the music they fell in love with was modified to something they weren't used to. \

I guess what gets me about "today's" rock is I used to be able to tell the band for a song that was playing because of the sound and style of the song. I can no longer do that with a lot of today's music.
I don't think its the band's fault. Its the record companies trying to pigeon-hole everyone into a sound that they think fits the market.

I agree with this. Rock used to be pretty personal. Nowadays, nearly everybody sounds the same. It's a whiny, power-chord love fest. Even bands that I thought were going to break the mold (Audioslave) slipped into that mainstream crap. Their first album was incredible... numbers two and three just fell way short. Beh.

Ironically enough, my mother loves mainstream modern music (she's even friends with a member of Dragonforce... that looks suspiciously like Kenny G) yet I'm still stuck in the 60's-mid 90's.
Almost feel like a cranky old man, yet I'm 18. I have friends that bring up phrases I don't understand (something Tequila, some chick that is apparently related to Lionel Richie, etc.), then I talk right back to them about how The Zombies were so much better than pre-psychadelic drugs Beatles.
