View Full Version : Hi-hat pedal idea for RB2

Just an idea, instead (or in addition to) using the second pedal as a second kick, on some songs how about using the second pedal as a Hi-hat controller, making one sound when pressing the pedal, one sound with the pedal held down and hitting the yellow cymbal(closed), and one sound with the pedal not held down and hitting the yellow cymbal (open).

This would help drummers more easily transition to real sets since your left foot mainly operates the Hi-hat pedal, with some double-bass on certain songs. When I got good on the RB drums and started playing an acoustic set, this was the one thing that tripped me up, working the Hi-hat pedal.

Just an idea :)

the blue pad is often already used as an open hi hat hit...

That's a completely different thing than getting all three sounds from the same cymbal, the way a real drum set works. Plus, it would allow you to only use your blue pad as a tom, as it should be. Just a little idea, that would help beginner drummers, I think.

It's impossible with the current hardware. Both kick pedals register as the same input, so the game has no way of differentiating between them. They would have to add another input for the hi-hat pedal and code the game to respond to it. Which is a lot more complex than just plugging two kick pedals into what is effectively a splitter.

The problem is that they can't just go back and rechart all the songs at this point (well they could, but they won't), so open hi-hat needs to stay as blue.

The closest thing you could do (I figure it's possible, though I'm not savvy enough to do it myself) is to create something that when the hi-hat pedal is open, a yellow pad hit registers as a blue hit... but that would create problems for any time that yellow isn't hi-hat.

Basically, as long as backwards compatibility is supported, we won't be seeing a hi-hat pedal.

create something that when the hi-hat pedal is open, a yellow pad hit registers as a blue hit.

This. It wouldn't be very hard to do as a DIY project. With either the RB2 or ION drums, such a high-hat "switch note" setup would work on ANY two drums/cymbals. It would just redirect the pulse from plug A to plug B which you could change around all you wanted before the song started.
