View Full Version : Idea for ION purchasers getting the DM5

Instead of paying for the DM5 sound module, then paying for shipping on top of that, if you don't mind paying a bit more, you can purchase the Alesis DM5 Electronic Drum Set with free shipping:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Alesis-DM5-Module-Pad-4-Piece-Electronic-Drum-Set-449750-i1141717.gc
It's only $90 more than the DM5 itself, then when you take the shipping charge out of that, the difference isn't that large. You'll get 2 more cymbals, a kick pedal, extra pads... Yes, all of this equipment is VERY low quality, but it's probably in and around the quality of the Drum Rocker, and you get very inexpensive equipment with which you can expand your set.
Just a thought.

Actually, the pads and such on that are worse than the ones with the Drum Rocker.
You're not getting the DM5 much cheaper than it is. If you find a new kit for cheaper, it means that the other parts are crappier than the drum rocker bits, which is pretty crappy.

i almost jumped on the alesis dm5 or the simmons sd5k
then i thought... im already spending $450+ why not just do the thing and do it right
ive been through 1000 different drum combination's and mods and a diy set that was lovingly crafted but too sensitive - so needless to say i've tried!
im finally satisfied
roland td-6 tour - mesh snare, dual zone pd8 pads, etc
it's connected to rb via a msa-p midi decoder
loving it like mcdonalds :)

Oh, the pads are much worse, yeah, but you get 2 cymbals, and you get a (albeit crappy) pad that you can use as a kick pad, when you use it with your DM5.
I'm not sure how much the shipping is on the DM5, but it's basically "throw in an extra $50ish and I'll give you a whole messload of spare parts." I know I would like to have 2 extra cymbals, even if they are pieces of crap, it's not like I paid a lot for them.
EDIT: sauhamm, that makes sense... I just really don't have the money, unfortunately :(

Watch craigslist or e-bay for a used kit. Especially on craigslist, people have this big kit taking up space and they need money (musicians are notorious for having cash flow issues) and they just want to make rent.
You can get some smoking deals on kits people bought, played twice, and then never played again and sold.
I personally don't price a DM5 at $350. I know I can pick one up, basically at will, for $150 used from a local music resale shop, e-bay, craigslist, etc.

I know it smore expensive but I had heard that this is a better kit

A little more expensive but worth it
I am not sure how it woud fare linking in to RB or RB2 however
If I get the knack of Drums in RB I was thinking of picking one up to help transition to real drums. Woudl also need a bigger appartment as well though :\

A better kit than what? Than the previous Alesis one posted in this thread? Yes.
Better than the Ion Drum Rocker? Nope, not a chance.
That kit you linked to is the Medeli DD-502 model bundled with a DM5 brain. The Ion Drum Rocker (and Simmons SD5K) is the Medeli DD-505 model. And yes, in this case, higher numbers means better kit.
And the first one linked in this thread is even lower quality than both the 502 and 505. So just think about that...As low-end of an e-drum kit as the DD-505 (Ion Drum Rocker) already is, the first link in this thread is at least 2 steps BELOW that. :)

Yeah, my goal was just to get extra stuff for dirt cheap, considering the already $350+ price tag of the DM5. But I will take Project_Mercy's advice and look for a cheaper DM5 module.

OK I have no personal experiece of any of these kits and was just going by on line reviews.
I couldnt find any favorable reviews of Ion kits but the Alessis one I linked to seemed to get very good reviews.
I guess you cant beat gettting out and kicking the tires for yourself though.

so say I'm in an apartment, wanna keep costs down on an e-drum set (because I love playing rock band on expert drums, but that doesn't mean I would rock on the real deal... and I don't wanna splurge cash on something that will sit around and make my wife yell at me for buying :D )
I'm torn between nabbing something like: http://www.rockbandroadie.com/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3
or just getting the ion drumrocker extra cymbals and down the line another module (anyone recommend a decent cheap drum brain for it?)

On teh subject of teh Simmons SD5K I found this
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Simmons-SD5K-Electronic-Drum-Kit-?sku=443369&src=3SOSWXXA
I am sure one of teh drummers can comment on whether the brain is any better than the Alessis one.

If you're going to buy a cheap kit then just get the drum rocker and a used brain + bass trigger and kick pedal. (basically, anything you find that's not Roland, Yamaha, and most of the Hart and Pintech kits).
If you want a nice kit that plays rockband, then go buy a Roland or yamaha kit and buy a MIDI converter.
There is no magic bullet. In electronic drums, you basically get what you pay for.

I bought a used DM5 off of EBAY for $230 shipped with mount (not sure if the mount will work with drum rocker, but oh well).....Now, if I only had the drum rocker...lol
