I was playing Dani California on Expert at Best buy the other day and i noticed they have these smaller notes on the screen and i was able to hit some of them but most of the time they didnt work.. are u supposed to go down and hit those small 5 buttons on your guitar? or what are they for and how do you hit the smaller notes on the screen? im guessing its like you strum it and then you finger the small ones but it doesnt seem to work right. Does any one know for sure how the small notes work and what the other 5 buttons are for?

The smaller notes are hammer-on/pull-off notes, like the white-capped notes in GH. The smaller 5 buttons allow you to play as if every note was a hammer-on/pull-off with no strumming required. It's useful for solos mostly.

The solo buttons ONLY work as HOPO's only during a solo. At every other point in the song, they just replicate the other fret buttons' functionality.

Yeah, exactly. How stupid would it be to create those 5 button where you wouldn't have to strum at any point in time?
That what the second poster said was something I heard floating around for a while but it doesn't make sense.

You'll know you can use the bottom 5 frets and not have to strum at all if your fretboard turns blue. This also means your guitar effects will kick in too.
