View Full Version : It's Official...IGN knows nothing about the Rock Band DLC

Every week, IGN.com does a "On the DLC" section in which they tell you what to download and what not to download on the marketplace.
They did not recommend the Scars on Broadway track, which I agree with. However, here is what they had to say about it.
"Scars on Broadway deliver a reasonably challenging song on the drums and guitar, but it's not all that fun. There are repetitive parts and sections where the difficulty ramps up quite a bit but the song itself just isn't much fun."
huh? last time I checked this song was Tier 1 on EVERYTHING

I wouldn't worry about IGN. They're likely biased towards their own music preferences, regardless of whether the song is fun or not. Don't they always play on medium or something? ;)

Wow, they really said that?
Impressive, IGN. Makes you wonder how many games they actually play before reviewing them, doesn't it?
Hmm...

ya and if the have a problem with repetition on the drums then they probably dnt know much about music at all to try to judge it

From what I have seen, they base their decision solely on music preferences, which seem to be pretty narrow.

Don't read IGN, it's damaging to your I.Q. Most gaming sites are the same, it's better to go off personal preference with this sort of thing.

In my opinion, the Jimmy Buffett pack was better. 'Course, I like Jimmy Buffett, and I don't like Disturbed. Ah well...

These are the same guys who said that Wonderwall was the no. 1 DLC track and that Message In a Bottle had one of the most fun bass lines in Rock Band, right?

Just curious looked all over IGN and google search, where is it? Any link? They sound crazy! Hah, but I am curious to read other RB DLC reviews from them from this week (and they have those videos up yet of next weeks DLC as someone mentioned in another thread?)
EDIT: Nevermind, found it...if anyone wants it, http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/896/896002p1.html

really? i downloaded the thenewno2 song ("yomp") because i think dhani harrison is a pretty good guitar player, and i actually enjoyed the song. i did not the scars on broadway song, but ive liked most SOAD stuff.
ok, background info aside....WTF IGN WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?
IGN's notes on "They Say":
-reasonably challenging on drums/guitar
-not too fun
-difficulty "ramps up" in sections
sorry, i didnt get the song, i just watched a youtube chart (for guitar) and i skipped ahead in 30 second steps...and it all looked the same! no ramp up, not challenging!
IGN's notes on "Yomp":
-dull
-long
-repetitive guitar riffs and drums
wait...what? i thought Yomp was like 3 minutes? sure, its slow for guitar, but thats not a big deal (to me). i totally like this song, kinda sounds like a modern version of georges solo stuff. And riffs? they're sustains, not so much "riffs", definitely more variety than they say, especially once the solo comes in. and drums, although i havent played them yet (only youtube) seem to be entertaining to say the least.
im sorry, but it seems as if IGN does indeed know nothing. they probably played all 4 songs, noticed "Electric Crown" and just mixed and matched their notes for the last 3 songs.

They weren't the only people to insult coheed in their RB review.
Oh and isn't the "On the DLC" segment written by the SAME PERSON every week?

No, this week it was by Nate Ahearn but usually Ryan Geddes does it but I believe he is on vacation. I like IGN but I completely disagree with their DLC reviews. I think they are usually pretty honest and with Rock Band they honestly just don't care. We all have an appreciation for the game and DLC but their interest in it just isn't there.
It's probably annoying to them that Rock Band releases stuff every week that they have to keep coming back to review...well too bad cause that's yo' job! :)

Well obviously IGN isn't one person. Many people write different articles with different opinions.

IGN's only a news source to me now. I've stopped their reviews after I noticed they were either heavily biased or made claims and gave no support, or both.

True, though I would assume articles like that would be a collaborative effort. Maybe not.
Also, I'm really not bashing IGN. I actually liked that album list a bit, though it definitely needed a bit of work... I would have replaced Back in Black with another AC/DC album, etc... but I can nitpick all day.

They lost the last of their credibility when they reviewed Afterlife and Critical Acclaim, saying the latter had a killer solo but didn't mention anything about Afterlife's.

I read an article around E3, and it said that they didn't play any of the RB tracks, but still rated them on how much fun they sounded like they might be.

How dare a place that posts reviews (a form of opinion) have an opinion that differs from my own!
I know a good solution! TO THE MESSAGE BOARDS! I shall write a scathing commentary! I shall cut them to their very core!

The thing is is that they called They Say challenging on guitar and drums, and, from what I've gathered, it isn't.

There's opinions ("Buffet Pack sounds a lot better than Disturbed Pack"), and then there's flat-out being wrong ("They Say gets challenging").
And if what I've heard about them only playing on medium (sure looked that way for the Doolitle preview...), then why the hell are they even giving reviews for DLC?!?! Reviews on DLC need to be on expert, or else any comments on the chart WILL be inaccurate. I mean, The Hand That Feeds was hella easy on hard drums (FCed it on my 3rd/4th try while still in hard career), but I failed it three times before passing it on expert drums. I hate saying the crappy adage, but... Can't Spell IGNorant Without IGN!

I disagree that reviews should be for Expert only. I know of 20-25 people personally who play RB and out of the entirety of all of us, only three of us regularly play the Expert level. Most are on Medium, some on Hard. Expert reviews are are useless to them. The comment about They Say is likely inane at any level you're playing at, however.

I understand what you mean. Its just that expert usually gives the best generalization of what the experience will be for everyone, not to mention that most people interested in DLC reviews are devotees of the game and are on expert for their respective instrument(s).
In a perfect world, where we could all go to hyperbolic time chambers to play every difficulty on an instrument or have personal robots to play everything and perform a diagnostic on a song for DLC reviews, that'd be perfect. But reviewers will focus only on one difficulty, and expert will give a good idea for everyone what to expect. Except for vocals, of course ;).
