View Full Version : ... what Rock Band 2 songs have surprised you or grown on you?

Okay, it's been awhile enough for a topic like this be posted I think. If you're like me you've been listening to the Rock Band 2 track list on and off since the announcement and have gotten a real chance to listen in-depth.

So my question to you is, what like.. three songs have surprised you by growing on you a lot or surprised you enough to make your excited for the game?

Probably best if you didn't chose songs you knew too much before the set list, instead try to pick the ones you didn't expect to find yourself excited for.

For me personally it's the following songs,...

Modest Mouse - Float On -- I hadn't heard of Modest Mouse before the announcement and I've found myself really, really enjoying this song and can't wait to play it when the game comes out!

Sound Garden - Spoon Man - After listening to it a few times I realized it has a Bass Solo, Drum Solo and a Guitar Solo. Not only that, the drums sound like they'll be so differing and varying throughout the whole song.

Elvis Costello - Pump It Up - I heard of Elvis Costello before, I just never bothered checking out his stuff. This is probably tied with Float On with my favourite song to listen to from the set list.

I know all the songs I chose are going to be low tier stuff, but that's the stuff I love playing in a band environment. I'm also excited to see the more extreme stuff, but scared.

So, which have delighted your senses?

Bodhisattva - Steely Dan: I was listening to the RB2 soundtrack while trying to sleep, but when this song came up I was like "...Huh? "What is up"? China?", I found the instruments really fun and the lyric a little weird but with a classy feeling. Turns out, I'm excited to play this song, it has a catchy tune.

That's What You Get - Paramore: I don't care, I simply love the lyric. Is very melodic, very sweet. Instruments are OK, but I want to sing it.

We Got The Beat - The Go Go's: Same as Paramore, liked the lyric part, reminds me of Cyndi Lauper (sort of classic 80's pop music). But I also loved the bass in here.

"The Eye of the Tiger" has me pumped. I was listening to that song the other day and it was just so silly. Pure fun. I think I'll try playing it with boxing gloves on.

On this end, the three songs that I have grown quite attached to would be the following.

Let There Be Rock - AC/DC
I have many AC/DC albums, but I was not familiar with this song. After listening to it once, I was convinced that this was my new favorite AC/DC song. I'm hoping this becomes the song for the opening cinematic for RB2. Can't wait to play.

Down With the Sickness - Disturbed
This on surprised me. This isn't a new song for me. To say the least, this kinda music is not my cup of tea. I re-listened to this song and it hit me like a ton of bricks. This song is gonna be really fun to play.

My Own Worst Enemy - Lit
I had never known the name of this song before but I heard it on the radio all the time. I never knew what the name was until I threw it onto YouTube and looked it up. I'm pumped that this song is in RB2.

ac/dc's "let there be rock"...

i've never been a fan of the band, having only heard my cousin's "back in black" tape all through my life as well as the songs that are inescapable on classic rock radio when working in warehouses and grocery stores, but this song actually impresses me. it won't likely be one of my absolute favorites, but i'm very thankful i'm not going to have to deal with one of the big radio hits on the game and can see this one actually being pretty fun to play.

AC/DC - "Let There Be Rock"
I had only known the singles from AC/DC up until the announcement for RB2, but this song just blows me away. Top-notch, and should be a lot of fun guitar work.

Bikini Kill - "Rebel Girl"
I admit, I had to get past the initially-grating vocals. But once I looked past it, I found a really catchy song with what sounds like awesome guitar work.

Alanis Morrissette - "You Oughta Know"
This is a song that I've known since I was younger, but never actually thought about the musicianship in it. I think it's going to be a blast to play, even if it is fairly straightforwards.

Easily Let There Be Rock by AC/DC. I'm one of those guys who was skeptical (heard the song before, but not too familiar with it) and wanted some of their more popular stuff, but damn, that song is pretty insane and it's really grown on me.

Tangled Up in Blue - Bob Dylan
Granted this song doesn't sound like it will be too difficult, but to me it sounds like a great mellow guitar song. Sounds really great to sing as well.

Come Out and Play (Keep 'em Seperated) - The Offspring
Sounds really fun on all instruments, and a great party song too.

Rock 'n Me - Steve Miller Band
I just love Steve Miller Band, so basically anything by them in Rock Band is a huge plus. I'm really hoping for some Steve Miller Band DLC.

Journey - Any Way You Want It - Catchy song, probably fun to play :)
Pearl Jam - Alive - Same as Man In The Box
Social Distortion - I Was Wrong - This song is awesome, and was a new one for me.
Sonic Youth - Teenage Riot - I liked "Kool Thing", but this one is even better in my opinion :)
Tenacious D - Master Exploder - I hated this band before I heard this song. I love this song now, and arguably the band too.

Man In The Box - Knew it before, just didn't know what it was until now. Kinda like two-thirds of the GH80s tracklist, for that matter. :)

Spoonman - Definitely has grown on me.

De-Luxe - Now, if only this thing would get out of my head...

Alex Chilton - This sounds like it could be a whole lot of fun to play.

Visions - Come on, this should surprise the crap out of you first time you hear it :)

daftuprising

Jimmy Eat World - The Middle Everyone's heard it, but since it was announced, I've listened to it more, and it's gonna be hella fun.

Foo fighters - Everlong Never listened to the song in it's entirety, even though it's on my iPod. But, it is a great song, going to be very fun.

Last and most importantly

Duran, Duran - Hungry Like the Wolf One of my friend's loves this song, but she usually likes acoustic alternative, so I immediately blew it off. But after giving it a listen, I absolutely am in love with this song. Going to be a blast.

Visions - Come on, this should surprise the crap out of you first time you hear it :)

And then surprise you again when you learn the vocalist is a girl :P

Bodhisattva really grew on me, sounds fun. Tangled Up in Blue also grew on me quite a bit. It won't be particularly hard, but I can't wait to do vocals + guitar on that one.

Most Surprising:
Abnormality - Visions (Well, who saw that coming?)
AC/DC - Let There Be Rock (I thought AC/DC was gonna debut on Guitar Hero...)
Pearl Jam - Alive (Would have expected another song by them)

Grown on to me:
System Of A Down - Chop Suey! (Was a great fan of SOAD some years ago, and now this song really got to me... Again.)
Jethro Tull - Aqualung (Had heard the song before, 'cause a friend of mine loves Jethro, but never liked until now.
Beck - E-pro (Same as Aqualung)

Colony of Birchmen - Mastodon : I was expecting generic and boring metal but instead got some pretty trippy stuff with interesting vocals
Bodhisattva - Steely Dan : I hadn't actually heard any Steely Dan songs and this one just blew me away. My favorite song on the list
Peace Sells - Megadeth : I'm not a big fan of metal (get more than enough of it on the radio stations over here), so I wasn't all that familiar with Megadeth. I loved Hangar 18, but still wasn't expecting to like Peace Sells as much as I do.

Tangled Up In Blue - Bob Dylan
Every Bob Dylan song I've heard before this one (admittedly, very few) just annoyed me. But I rather like this one and am pumped to play it.

Teen Age Riot - Sonic Youth
Another song I've never heard of that I really enjoy.

Feel the Pain- Dinosaur Jr.
I remember this song mostly for the video (where they drive around in a golf cart) and its appearance on Beavis & Butthead. Who knew it was such an awesome song?

AC/DC - Let There Be Rock

I hadn't heard this song before it was announced, but before I got a chance to check it out, I heard a lot of hate for this song. And I heard the song and I didn't understand it at all. True, drums will suck and be basic, but that's true for most AC/DC songs, and guitar will be great in this song. Not to mention HMX would have to be insane to not get more AC/DC for DLC.

Alanis Morisette - You Oughta Know

When I first saw this name on the list, I thought HMX was crazy, but then I listened to it and realized that Alanis Morisette was in a completely different league than Avril Lavigne/Britney Spears/all that stuff I'd grouped her in with before I ever heard her. This song is raw and emotional in a way that most songs can't hope to reach, not to mention Flea's bass oughta be fun.

Bad Company - Shooting Star

I listened to this once or twice back when it was announced in OXM magazine, but at the time, I wasn't overly impressed. I thought it was a decent song but pretty slow. However, listening to it again, I realized that there's plenty cool guitar stuff going on behind the scenes and I'm really looking forward to it.

Dinosaur Jr - Feel the Pain

I was never really into indie bands, but this song is pretty cool and should be fun for everyone. Way more than I was expecting from a band I'd never even heard of.

Lacuna Coil - Our Truth

All I knew about Lacuna Coil was that they had a lame song in GH3's bonus list that had very little guitar for a game called Guitar Hero. Apparently, HMX knows what they're doing moreso than Neversoft's "pick a popular song that maybe has guitar or something" philosophy. This is a really good, hooky song with some pretty fun-sounding drums and bass, and I'm glad HMX gave me a second chance to get into this band.

Modest Mouse - Float On

I'd heard of this song (who hasn't?) but since I don't listen to radio, I'd never actually heard it and all I knew was that it was a breakthrough hit for some indie band that caused it's diehard hipster fans to proclaim it a sellout. Much like the Alanis song, I went in expecting the worst, but it turned out to be a really catchy song with a cool main riff.

The Replacements - Alex Chilton

This is probably the best song in Rock Band 2 that I didn't already know before the setlist was announced. I'm in love (what's that song?) I'm in love with this song.

Squeeze - Cool for Cats

This is just so impossibly dorky that it's impossible not to love it. I can't wait to try singing it with an over-the-top Cockney accent.

Let There Be Rock AcDc- I grew up in the 80s/college in the 90s so of course I know many AcDc songs... but this one was new to. It is now one of my favorites and I can not wait to play it.

Feel The Pain Dinosaur Jr.... I remember them from the 90s but I forgot how good they were. Very excited to play this song.

Jethro Tull Aqualung- Of course I had heard it... the sitting on a park bench song. But I can not say that I have ever really listened to it before RB2. Now I think that it is a classic among classics.... Will be interesting to see how it plays!

Newer Songs- I imagine a lot of the newer songs are really going to grow on me as I play them....

Where Did You Go has really taken me by surprise, as I'm not a big ska fan and had nnever heard of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones before.

E-Pro is really sweet too. It seems like I've heard it somewhere before, but I don't know where.

Bodhisattva really shocked me. I thought of Steely Dan just as okay before, but this song is great.

Kids in America has really grown on me. When I first heard the Muffs' version, I hated it. But now I kinda like it. I'd still rather have Lawnmower Deth's cover though. :o

Float On is one of those songs that I had heard before but never knew the title or band. I'm definitely gonna go get some more Modest Mouse songs after hearing this one.

Nine in The Afternoon is sort of a guilty pleasure. I absolutely HATE Panic at the Disco, but whenever I hear this song it seems like it'll be fun on RB.

The Middle is one everyone has heard but I never knew who it was by. I've been listening to it alot lately.

The Middle is a classic 90's anthem to me but I never knew who it was by. I've been listening to it alot lately.

actually, this song wasn't released until 2001... i only know because of an incredibly obnoxious ex-roommate who was obsessed with jimmy eat world and kept me up many nights when this album came out.

I know that there are so many awesome choices, and some are bound to be overlooked, BUT.....

No one has mentioned "Spirit in the Sky"! I think this was the first song I ever played on my air guitar. and of course "Rock n' Me" because Steve Miller is pretty excellent.

Ooh this is hard. There were a ton of songs that I already know and love. And there were a ton more that I didn't know by name, but recognized when I heard them. I'm pretty much in love with the whol list at this point.

For some that seem to have grown on me since first listen.

Rush - The Trees
Once I started actually listening to the lyrics, I completely fell in love with it. Can't wait to sing this one.

Dream Theater - Panic Attack
Never heard any Dream Theatre before this. Gets better with each playing.

Alanis Morissette - You Oughta Know
I really like listening to the vocals on this. I might need to be careful and make sure there are no recording devices around, or people for that matter, when I try to put on my best (worst) Alanis impression.

Those are just a few. I'm super-psyched for the rest of this set-list. Will have to post this topic again after launch to find out everyone's knew favorites after getting in some play time.

Any Way You Want It
Eye of the Tiger
Carry On Wayward Son

Not to limit myself to a specific era/genre (well, okay that's exactly what I'm doing) but this stuff was all but absent from RB1 and its DLC. Practically the whole setlist has me excited, but particularly these three.

Let There BE Rock by AC/DC because it was surpising to see the song not be back in black. (and I'm so happy about that)

The Middle by Jimmy Eat World-I hate mainstream music but this one sounds really catchy.

The Trees by Rush-Surpised that they didn't pick a more well known song. (but I'm really happy about this one)

Drain You by Nirvana-Same as Rush. I really glad that they didn't use Lithium, Come As You Are, or Smells Like Teen Spirit, because those probably wouldn't be as fun as this one.

Pump It Up by Elvis Costello-I've never heard of it before, but I really like it.

Give It Away by The Red Hot Chili Peppers-I've never really listened to much RHCP except for the songs that sound like Under The Bridge, Snow (Hey Oh), and Dani California, but this is so much better than those. Its really funky.

that should be about it. there are more, but I'm to lazy to post them.

Master Exploder - Hadn't heard the song or seen the movie before it was announced, but Im really looking forward to this one. Even if you hate Jack Black, you have to admit he's got some pipes.

Everlong - I'm not a big Foo Fighters fan, but this song has grown on me. Will be hella fun on drums.

There's a ton of songs I'm really looking forward to also. If it's bolded, then it's the ONE song I would have picked from that band:

You Oughta Know
Let There Be Rock
Ramblin' Man
White Wedding Pt. I
Livin' On a Prayer - I'll never be able to play this without thinking of Al on the drums though :p
Down With the Sickness
Panic Attack

I had been listening to Dream Theater a bit before the setlist announcement, so now i'm pumped for Panic Attack. I've always loved Give It All by Rise Against, probably my #1 requested song for RB. And although I've never liked RATM (dont like the vocalist at all), Testify started growing on me after about 2 or 3 listens.

Wow. You should really give some of their old songs a listen.

If you look at anything off of Answer that and stay Fashionable or Very Proud of Ya you get a completly different sound. And then Listen to Black Sails in the Sunset or The Art of Drowning, and its completly different once again.

Then you listen to anything off of Sing the Sorrow or more recent, and its complete utter crap.

AC/DC - "Let There Be Rock". Just plain AWESOME. Can't wait for that bass line and vocals.

Silversun Pickups - "Lazy Eye". I know, kinda emo, but I dig it. Vocals sound fun.

The Replacements - "Alex Chilton". I have to admit, I'm becoming a new fan of these guys because of this song. Truly awesome band.

Mastodon - "Colony Of Birchmen". Rock Band is definitely getting me into this band.

None of this comes as huge surprise to me. Harmonix has always introduced me to new music. FreQuency and Amplitude got me into electronic music (espcially BT and The Crystal Method), Karaoke Revolution re-introduced me to the Gin Blossoms and reminded me how awesome "Bizzare Love Triangle" and New Order are, GH 2 and Rock Band made a Police fan out of me, and I recently became convinced Judas Priest is my favorite metal band thanks to this series (espcially "Devil's Child"). Thanks, Harmonix. There were more to list, but those really stick out for me.

Chop Suey! has really grown on me as has White Wedding Pt.1 and Battery.

Dream Theater - Panic Attack
Never really been a fan of DT, and at first just sort of skipped over this song. Now I absolutely love it, it's amazing.

Alanis Morissette - You Oughta Know
Always secretly liked this song, but listening to it a lot has really gotten me excited for it being in RB2.

Bikini Kill - Rebel Girl
Hated this song at first, but it's really grown on me. Definitely not going to be my favorite, but at least I don't hate it anymore.

Oh

Honorable Mention (bonus song)
Speck - Conventional Lover
It's just great. 'Nuff said.
