View Full Version : One thing that far surpasses Guitar Hero

One thing I noticed that is a HUGE improvement from the original Guitar Heros, as well as Guitar Hero III.

Stage Performance, the stage performance is much for believable and realistic in this game. Especially the lighting effects on the crowd, and the particle effects (dust) in the light...I must say /applaud.

also, Harmonix. you did a great job making the animations seem different from one another so it doesn't look like an entire crowd object with 1 animation.

I must say, playing through GH3, that almost just felt awkward looking at the crowd. There's like 30 of the same person jumping up and down in unison...creepy.

My first response: "WTF IS THAT!!"

My wife's: "OH GOD I CAN SEE FOREVER"

Yeah, that guy creeped me out. I kept thinking he either looked like a critter from the "Critters" movies:

or a Langolier:

Just plain scary.

Things I don't like about the singer in Guitar hero 3:

The Mouth: It's freakishly huge and an eyesore, you find yourself staring at it going "WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU?!"

The Movements: Almost all he does is stand around, flap his huge jaws, and move his hands a little bit, there are times where he'll get a little active, but it was kind of a downer to see him just standing around while playing WttJ

The Mouth: WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU!?!??!!?

Things I like about the singer:

Bret Michaels comes in and saves me from his evil jaws of doom

Everyone keeps blasting the wierdo looking guy singer, but the lady singer is pretty good. It's almost a spot on match to the GH2 version. (In retrospect, it's amazing they could copy her so well and do such bad copies of every other character)

My first thought. "This dude is gonna eat my soul!"

Second thought. "If Jay Lenno and Mic Jagger and Steven Tyler had a lovechild, this would be it."

True, the female singer was okay, but I almost don't notice after the shock of that guy! I mean, only about three of the songs don't feature him, so when you come across one of those, I personally have already trained myself to avoid looking at the singer.

Not even for Bret?

Well, I included him in the three songs that don't include the male singer. ;)

Yeah, that was one of the few highlights, seeing him there.

yeah, kudos to the animation team and mocap actors for the awesome animation in Rock Band. my jaw was on the floor most of the time the first time i saw the animations for RB. i love the fact they are so energetic, and loved alot of things like say the singer getting near the guitarist and guitarist singing along...and the syncronized "band jumping." When i saw the singer dive into the crowd during a song i totally marked out and got up and said, "THAT'S IT...THEY'VE...THEY'VE DONE IT!" haha.

my question in case a member of Harmonix reads this...was there alot of keyframed cleanup animation done from the raw mocap data, or was alot of the raw mocap data good to go from the start? and was proprietary software used, or software such as MotionBuilder used?

the animations in rock band make guitar hero look just aweful. rockband is how it should be. the characters' sync with what is actually being played/sung is miles above guitar hero. the sequences look like a real concert and/or music video. it actually gets me pumped to play when you see them rockin the fuk out

I think the GHIII singer looks like a Muppet.

I love it when the singers and guitarists sing in the same mic together, little touches like that really make the game just that much more awesome.

The GHIII's drummer animation is worse than those pizza-and-ballpit animatronic performers from when you were a little kid >.>

Oh and another thing, thank you for allowing us to earn money every performance! It used to be you'd pretty much have to five * everything to go shopping to the max, now it's just up to your determination to feed your wallet. Vast improvement.

The GHIII singer told me to kill someone once...freaked me out so I took him back to gamestop.

GH3's singer is modeled after Steven Tyler.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the GH3 singer was the Mick Jagger character from the old Spitting Image show in the 80's:

I played RB for awhile than decided to play a couple of songs on GH3 (I was missing Welcome To The Jungle and Prayer Of The Refugee.)

I noticed many differences.

In rock band the singer is dancing around, crowd surfing, leaning over and sharing the mic with the guitarist. The drummer is thrashing his/her head, the bassist is moving around, and the guitarist is all over the place, jumping in the air, doing power slides. I love it! It's like a REAL show.
GH is like "oh look I'm playin' mah gee-tar I'm twirling in circles, activatin' mah star power and makin' flashy lights hur hur hur."

I also noticed in GH1 and GH2 you can see the character's holding a strumming individual strings, you can see them vibrating and their fingers fretting.
In GH3 they SORT of KINDA move their hand up and down the neck but other than that I didn't notice much detail to it.
Also when strumming their hands look very robotic...

The drummer looks robotic too, he's scary.

Bret Michaels' face is hideous and disturbing. (I like the male singer thank you very much.)

The character I use (Casey Lynch) keeps doing the same stage moves (twirling around on one foot, she'll do it once, then keep on doing it.)

The singer is ALWAYS doing the same moves.

I agree, they are much better.
I know serveral times I have spent breaks in the song watching the animations, and then miss my next notes.

Come on...someone tell me they have pandora's old animation....you know the one im talkin about....you know...

where she drops to her knees with her guitar.....and grinds it.

Yeah...THAT animation.

THAT NEEDS TO COME BACK.

Anyway, GH3 had lots of problems, animation wise. It's just not fun to watch the characters. As for the singer....if you listen to the White zombie or rob zombie song on gh3.....his mouth kinda fits for that song....it's creepy though.

And he does remind me of a muppet. One from the old show...I wanna say the drummer dude....

That stage move is the greatest stage move ever invented in the history of the world.

I'm usually looking at the fretboard when I play GHIII so the audience animation doesn't really affect me that much.
