CLUSTER your servers!!!

No offense, but if you expect this server to handle the load it's going to be getting when this game launches, you must be on crack.

For #1, you should separate main rock band website from the forums, mainly because people stream data off it which in return screws up forum load speeds (because of QoS)

For #2, Cluster your servers with NLB (Network Load Balance), assuming your using IIS to run this website you should have no problem setting up 8 web servers and cluster them together.

5 for Main website, and 3 for the forums.

NLB Clustering is very inexpensive also, no need for proprietary hardware.

I really hope you guys implement this fast, or fly me down there and i'll do it myself :).

Cheers!

We do all of that now. While simultaneously getting ready to relaunch the community site with new software.

well I can't imagine the load on these servers then, I was pretty sure that you guys were doing some sort of implementation.

damn, I can't imagine your server room after launch ROFL

Obviously, something isn't right. otherwise, this website would be running as smooth as butter.

I know first hand how clustering works, however, I can understand and appreciate that you guys are getting unforseen network load.

Just add some more servers, or tell your IT guys to stop seeding torrets ;) hahahah

As Sean said yesterday, there's lots of upgrades going on right now. Obviously yesterday's slowness was because of the awesomeness that is the new main Rock Band site. I'm sure there's more work being done today to prepare for the new community site (which I pray will work better than a certain other community site for a rhythm game).

Maybe it's the Phase website trying to get up? ;)

That's probably the most likely thing. We're tracking down the issues now. If it is a software problem then it won't matter much because we won't be using the same software for launch when the community site gets revamped. vBulletin will remain the same as it scales wicked nice.

Don't worry, we are totally on it. Keep in mind a goodly sum of my job is being on this site. And if I can't work- NO ONE IS HAPPY...

Yeah, software updates will kill servers until the bugs/kinks get worked out. That seems to be the problem here since I can load the forum index quickly, but actual posts slowly. That screams "software" to me. I could always be wrong though...

:D

Is it because you stalk people with your shirt tied into a bikini?

For the sanity of all HMX employees, I hope they find the issue ;)

I'm sure Harmonix has plenty of knowledgeble people to handle their servers. They don't need your advice, which is probably common knowledge.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say Nov. 20.

Yeah I'm guessing that among Harmonix's group of world class programmers and engineers, someone probably already knew the basics of running a large web site.

By the way, Harmonix programmers, don't allow any memory leaks in your Rock Band code. You can avoid them by freeing or deleting your heap variables once you're done using them. You're welcome!

I though it was just my computer that was acting stupid again... that explains the slowness :D

Sean... HMX is awesome ;) Tell Alex that he's my hero :D

I saw the thread and was just going to come in here and complain, but it seems like it's already handled. (You were right, definitely common knowledge.) You'd think that "CLUSTER" was a magical windex you could spray on the interwebs to make servers slow-proof or something. heh heh

And while it's likely that this is a linux setup, the Apache headers only state Unix... so, in the category of uncommon knowledge, if you guys need a fanatical fan with a solaris sys admin day job to write some D for you (as in D-Trace), you just let me know. ;)

The new site is completely epic, how you guys got it not to lag with everything going on on it is just amazing, maybe that's a little taste of how flawless online will be with our bands? ^_^
