View Full Version : Alternate Rock Histories

I remember a while ago there was a thread on alternate rock histories if certain people hadn't died, so I figured, why not make a new one where anything could have happened.
Note: You can only change one event in Rock history...this way we don't have as many duplicates.
I'll go first...
John Bonham doesn't die after consuming Vodka and ham. Instead, Led Zeppelin heads back into the studio releasing Coda in 1982 under the name Vintage as it contained 12 previously unreleased tracks.
The two years later they release Firm which is The Firm's albums The Firm and Mean Buisness. The difference is the songs themselves have different lyrics, bass lines, and drums, but the same guitar (at least on songs co-written by Page).
Led Zeppelin starts going into the music video buisness with the release of the album Outrider (containing tracks from the actual Jimmy Page album, and some from Plant's solo career). The music videos for Stairway to Heaven, Dazed and Confused, Rock and Roll, and Black Dog are all over MTV, which based off the huge ratings following Led Zeppelins contribution change they're name to Rock TV.
In 1987 LZ releases Mothership, which is full of new material. This is followed by a hiatus of 4 years until the next album, Walking into Clarksdale is released.
After this Led Zeppelin usually releases an album every 6 years, but these albums are not met with as much praise.
Alternate Rock Events: MTV (Now Rock TV) does not end up creating the Pop/Hip Hop storm it does in reality.
Rush and Led Zeppelin tour together, which ends up being the biggest selling tour in history. Fan favorites from this tour include Stairway to Syrinx, Tom Sawyer's Last Stand, and A Passage to Kashmir, which are mash ups of Rush and Led Zeppelin tunes.
...yes, I was that bored.

I;m going to build a time machine and keep John Bohnam from dying just so this can happen.:D

Kurt Cobain doesn't die in 1994.
NIRVANA goes on. The band releases Nirvana, a new album being promoted by their new single "You Know You're Right".
There are many songs on the album written by Dave Grohl. Who knew he could write? Grohl also sings one song called "This Is A Call". This song becomes the band's next single.
Kurt divorces Courtney Love in 1995 due to "irreconcilable differences". Many tabloids (and fans) suspect that this is due to Courtney's drug use. Courtney Love re-marries Eddie Veder in 1997.
The 10th anniversary of Nevermind brings the ultimate concert. The "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Tour is the highest selling concert tour of all time. The concerts are remembered by fans because this marked the first time NIRVANA played all the songs off Nevermind in album order LIVE. The tour also featured an amazing opening act, Dave Grohl's side band: Foo Fighters.
NIRVANA continues putting out albums frequently (every other year or so).
They become the top selling band of all time.
In 2007, a new video game called Rock Band features the now quadruple platnum album Nevermind as playable content.
The band's next album is due out sometime in 2009.

Interesting that Nevermind is only quadruple platinum if Cobain doesn't die. The album was certified diamond (10,000,000 units) on March 24, 1999, but apparently it wouldn't be nearly as successful in this alternate universe you have created had he not perished.
I also have to assume that Nevermind is Nirvana's most successful album in your alternate reality since it is the only album of which you also mentioned record sales. So, how exactly were they able to surpass The Beatles 100,000,000+ units sold worldwide?
I'm just wondering if you ignored all past realities when you came up with your post...

Unintentionally.
I just wrote something out.
I also feel that a lot of people got into NIRVANA because of his death, and Nevermind is the album they picked up.
With him still alive, those people DO get into NIRVANA eventually, but it isn't with Nevermind.

On april 17, 1961, Russia and USA both bombard themselves with nuclear bombs, causing most of North America and Europe to become unlivable. The war keeps on until everybody dies over there. Asia takes control of the world and Rock and Roll and blues die and most of the present day mainstream music genres die in the egg.

John Lennon doesn't die. He lives on and the beatles make many more hits. When the game called "Rock Band" comes out, John loves the idea and makes sure they get beatles songs. This causes rock band to be HUGELY SUCCESSFUL (way more than it currently is) and influences every other band in the world to put songs in rock band causing ROCK BAND TO GET ALL THE DLC YOU COULD EVER IMAGINE!!!!!!!!!!! Because of this major success, rock band defeats its competition and gains many more fans. DLC sells like crazy, causing all the great bands of the world to tour together in this wonderful success they have acheived. They rock so hard all the dead rockers (kurt cobain, jimi hendrix, etc.) rise from their graves and join the tour as rock zombies that rock out 1000000 times better than when they were alive. THE WORLD THAN ROCKS ON UNTIL THE END OF TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.........sorry about that. It seemed cool to me lol.........

I can't write a history right now, but just imagine if Paul Di'Anno wasn't kicked from Iron Maiden. Bruce doesn't become a star, the band never takes off, ends in turmoil, and the NWOBHM movement never has a real popular, definitive leader.
Man, imagine how different metal would be.

Randy Rhoads doesn't die. He leaves Ozzy's solo band, and starts his solo band, which produces 3 critically acclaimed albums that all go platinum. In the course of the tour for his 3rd solo album, his vocalist ODs on cocaine. Distraught, Rhoads reunites with Ozzy in 1987, after Jake E. Lee is fired for poor songwriting. Ozzy does No Rest for the Wicked and No More Tears with Rhoads, along with Geezer Butler. Even after Ozzy "retires" and returns, Rhoads stays with him while restarting his solo poject, persuades Sharon not to replace tracks and remix Ozzy's original 3 solo albums, and a 12-pack of Ozzy songs on Rock Band, with a performance celebrating this deal at Ozzfest.

Ok then:
Black Sabbath, after Ozzy quits/is fired, brings in Michael Bolton to sing lead. Bolton writes Metal songs with verry Un-Metal subjects and is kicked out after two albums. He then decides that Doom Metal sucks and starts a Hair band, who's one hit is a Hair-Metal Ballad version of "When A Man loves a Woman". He fades away, and now Henry Rollins will have to find someone else to hate.

Dimebag Darrell:
On December 9th, 2004, "Bob Zilla" is kicked out of Damageplan due to attacking Paul and Lachman backstage after a Columbus, OH gig. In need of a new bassist, Rex Brown formerly of Pantera is hired. The band plays several gigs and a small tour during 2005. On January 1st, 2006, the band heads into the studio under the label Epic Records. They start recording their second album "No Excuses", based after an Alice In Chains song. The album is finished on August 3rd and released on August 12th. The instrumental track entitled "Bleeding Prism" features Dimebag Darrell and Joe Satriani trading off solos. On August 29th, Phil Anselmo overdosed. A tribute concert was held Damageplan, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, and System Of A Down. Sales of Pantera went through the roof due to the death of Anselmo, especially "A Vulgar Display Of Power". Patrick Lachman left Damageplan to work with his new band, Mercy Clinic. Lachman was replaced with Terry Glaze, the singer of Pantera during their hair metal days. Damageplan turns into a new Pantera. They go on tour until December 6th. On the last day of their tour, they announce their next studio album and a live DVD. The album, entitled "Loud Racket", went on sale April 1st, 2007. The album was a huge success, selling 350,000 per week. The album was certified Diamond by the RIAA on December 31st, 2007. The "Make More Racket" world tour kicked off in Hartford, CT on May 2nd. The tour lasted 11 months. Pantera was joined by Testament and White Zombie on the tour. Dimebag Darrell went to perform on Pink Floyds new album, "Days of Haze and Daze". Glaze and Brown appeared on Aerosmiths new album "A Play On Words". Vinnie Paul spent his spare time teaching a class at Berklee Institute of Music.

1972 - by pure chance, a van full of the band Styx runs a red light smashing into a car containing some founding members of Journey. There are no survivors. The world is spared a travesty only imagined in some child's worst nightmare. All is right with the world.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Although, Kurt might have left music at some point, but still, awesome.
P.S. I'm glad to see that you've taken to the "correct spelling" of NIRVANA. ;) How'd you find out?
