Hi everyone. I'm a new poster here so if this has been discussed before, feel free to flame me.
I'm an avid fan of the GH series and I have GH1, GH2 (PS2/360), and 80's. I've recently bought GH3 for 360 and I kinda feel that the songs sound a little off, and I'm kinda wondering how much magic Harmonix would do to the songs to make it sound like they did in those games.
These are the things I noticed in GH3:
1.) Note timings, note charts, HO/PO's don't make any sense and don't seem to go into the right strum timings as old GH games did. (Uneven note graphs, notes repeatedly going for 1.5 frets and not just extending the frets to 1.5 timing, HO/PO's only happening on one note for a whole descending/ascending note series.)
2.) Sound mixing seems different. The guitars aren't fleshed out as they used to. Turning the band and sfx down makes you realize how wierd the guitar you're controlling sounds. Its like youre controlling two different guitars and switches in between lead/rhythm when you do. Some lead parts aren't playable and seem to leave you playing rhythm.
3.) Song list is debatable - but I kinda feel I don't really like the other songs as much as I liked the songs I didn't know in GH1 and GH2.
I kinda knew Harmonix was the definitive authority for all things rhythm game related as I've seen how dedicated they can be to thier music in thier videos from the games, but I gave GH3 a shot, online guitar battles and the wireless les paul seemed like a good idea.
Feel free to discuss or flame.
P.S.: In addition, Rock Band track list seems like a huge winner. I don't know probably half of the songs but the other half are pure gold to me.

Welcome to the boards man. No need to worry about flaming here, were not like that.
In short, you're 100% right.
Neversoft hired custom notechart makers to help them with it because they have no idea what they were doing. In GH1 and 2, harmonix designed the notecharts to replicate the feeling of playing that song on a guitar. In GH3 they just went by pitch. It has nothing to with feeling just the sound of the note. The hammer on timing window was increased alot so you have more time to hit the button making it alot easier.
I like the game and I will probably stop after rock band comes out. But it was alot better than I thought it was going to be.

Yeah, I can't remember if the song is Even Flow or another one but near the end while playing on expect it feels like i'm just mashing buttons, not the actual notes in the song, some notes aren't even played I don't think. I don't have the full game but I have played it and I have to say, it's a lot better than I thought it was going to be as well.

My thoughts exactly.
I've also noticed that once you get used to playing GH3 (along with the larger window to hit the notes), you end up screwing up more when you go back and play songs on Expert on GH2. That happened to me after awhile and I was just like o_o wth is going on?!?!??! Has anyone else experienced this??
On a better note, a new friend of mine is "lending" me his copy of GH3 so I can play online with him for the time being till Rock Band comes out :D

Yes, I have and I have to admit, it was moderately upsetting.
I agree GH3 feels wrong to me at times, but it is still quite fun, and has provided me with some serious enjoyment. HOWEVER I doubt much GH3 will be played in my house November 20th-. . . well. . . pretty much several months after that.

we only flame when the person REALLY deserves it ;)
anyways, i've gotta disagree with you. some note charts are off a bit, but otherwise the game plays almost exactly like any other guitar hero.

lol. Hi welcome, and yeah we've discussed this stuff many times before, but hey whatever, it happens. GH3 wasnt the best game ever, it was...."OK"

Welcome to the boards man! I'm pretty new here myself, and I haven't been flamed... yet.
I agree with you about the note charts being screwy. I mean, it's still /fun/, but the other two guitar heroes occupied me and my family for months. Now, about 2 weeks after GH3's release, we're all kinda bored with it despite the excellent songlist.
A few songs have been remixed / remastered, also. Most noticably, Killswitch Engage's 'My Curse' - the song's normally full of screamed vocals, but the GH3 team appears to have edited those parts out.
Some of the editing is appreciated, though - on the same song (My Curse), the CD version fades out at the end. The version in the game does not include this fadeout.

Original poster is dead on with the comment on the sound mix. HMX had a way with making the guitar really stand out in GH1/2. It is lacking in GH3 at time, making you wonder... "uhh, what am I playing here".
It's even worse for the bassist. I was playing a setlist online yesterday and I couldn't even hear my own part. The only audio cue I had was when I missed notes.

I think the sound is fine... the gameplay is good, the boss battles are fun (unless you can't beat them) the note charts are harder but they're pretty fun to play... the HO/PO system does bother me a bit but I've gotten used to it and I've made adjustments to my strumming style and I find it much easier for the trem picking parts in this game... the online is great and they really haven't gotten a lot of credit but putting a rhythm game online I'm sure it pretty difficult
