I think the remake of Metal Gear Solid 1 for the Gamecube.
Granted, I still haven't started playing 4 yet...

Lol what about the odd multiplayer ones with the skateboard in it?

I voted for the first one because that's the only one I finished. The story in the second one made me want to punch the ADD fifth grader who wrote it, and that pretty much turned me off of the MGS games.

I voted for 3. 4 had the best graphics and the story was fantastic, but I feel like I spent more time watching cut scenes than playing the game. Which was fine on my first play through, because I was pretty invested in the story. But the second time I tackled the game I definitely found myself wishing there was more sneaking and less talking.

Snake Eater seemed to strike a pretty good balance between plot/gameplay.

I'm not sure, they are all great.

Metal Gear Solid starting it all, and was a landmark. It feels awkward, playing it today though.

Metal Gear Solid 2 definitely has the most philosophical and confusing storyline. This gives it replay value, in a way. It also lets you see Snake from a third person point of view.

Metal Gear Solid 3 had the most straight-forward and emotional story.

Metal Gear Solid 4 was, and I don't use this word often... epic.

I just got and played them all.

MGS4. In fact, I'd say its one of the top 10 games ever.

I really hated them all, except 4

MGS4 really pulled together all the best aspects of the first three games and created nothing short of an epic experience. I mean, everything--all the emotions that had been building up ever since the first game--you could feel them all flooding back as you struggled through the freaking MICROWAVE HALL, as though everything you had ever experienced since infiltrating the docks at the beginning of MGS1 was training you for this one shining, excruciating moment. In terms of gameplay, MGS4 wins, bar none. My only gripe is that you didn't really get to make total use of all Snake's new moves anywhere past Act 2. Not really, I don't think.

However, I still consider MGS1 to be my actual favourite. It just did so many things right right out of the gate. It was such a new and wonderful experience for everybody, no one could deny how novel it made the sneaking genre feel. In terms of its story, the game had perfect pacing. I mean, it might not have been as emotionally involved as MGS4 or 3, or as mind-bogglingly complicated (which was a good thing for my experience with Sons of Liberty) as MGS2, but whatever story Kojima-san needed to tell in the first game, he conveyed it clearly and with just the right amount of feeling and intrigue. There were no frills and no overlong cutscenes--It was just right.

What? No spoiler tags? That's dumb.

I played through Disk1 of the first game.

I'm not a big fan of it.

It was an incredibly well made game, no doubt about it, and it is great to play, but I'm no good at it, I have horrible patience in video games.

Yea, the Microwave hallway was pretty freakin' epic. I mean, thats up there with Aerith dying in terms of OMG moments in video games.

And don't forget how it was really a visit back to the first 3 games...especially the last battle.

And the ending movie.

Oh. My. God.

Speaking of the ending to MGS4. That guy died way too many times. Like, he almost dies, like, 5 times before he actually bites it. But when he does, and when he utters his last words ... I didn't cry or anything, but was definitely an emotional moment.

Oh, and I didn't really like the credits song for MGS4, or at least the performance of it. The music itself was really nice and all, and you felt that a long journey had finally ended (for more than one person, definitely), but the vocalist's style of singing just grated on me. They should have gotten someone with a more lofty, consistently angelic voice, 'cause honestly, it sounded like they did one recording and used that in the final cut of the game.

I definitely agree with you up to a point. That microwave hallway, and really all of Act 5, was amazing, simply because it felt like the summing up of just about everything you'd done in the series. It was a great finale, probably one of the greats.

But from a gameplay perspective I think the ball gets dropped after Act 2. What gameplay there was was far and away better than the other games, I agree. But the fact that 3/5 of the game don't focus on all the innovations brought forth in the first two acts make it hard for me to say that part 4 has the best gameplay.

I definitely understand, but I'll be honest... I bought Mgs4 for the cutscenes, not the gameplay :(

Yes, I am crazy.

Oh, and another thing they should have done for story purposes: They should have allowed Snake and Ocelot to finish the gun duel they started waaaaaaay back in MGS1. I've always considered Revolver Ocelot to be Snake's true nemesis, as opposed to Liquid Snake, and so I was hoping that Snake and Ocelot would have the opportunity sometime in MGS4 to do battle to decide who the better shootist was. For me at least, that would have totally made the resolution of that particular conflict.

It would go:

MGS4>MGS1>MGS3>MGS2

To everyone who says that the innovations were wasted past Act 2 is right to some degree.

Are we talking OctoCamo or what other innovations?

Cause during the Wolf battle, I used the OctoCamo alot...under a truck....

I feel like MGS3 was not only the most enjoyable, but the story was also straightforward and filled with emotion. I was all teary-eyed when Eva said "She was a true patriot." I didn't think the story in MGS4 packed as much of an emotional punch. I really wanted to cry for Snake during the microwave part, but I never really came close.

In other news Twin Snakes had some of the coolest action scenes. I mean, Snake jumps off a freaking missle.

Jaime, what are you talking about??!! MGS4 the last scene of act 3 (I think it was act 3) when snake is in Paris, man if that doesn't pack emotional punch I don't know what does, and coincidentally it involves Eva as well.

How bout the last part of Naked Sin? I was in tears (not like, "WAAAAAH" but more like *sniff*) at that part...I felt bad for Snake, Otacon, and Sunny.

...then there was the debriefing, and all was good.

I don't really think of the octocamo as an innovation. It seems pretty similar to the camouflage system in mgs3, only with a squishy noise and a neat little optical effect.

I was thinking more along the lines of allying yourself with other soldiers, the streamlined CQC system, the little robot that can explore ahead for you, and using the environment to track the movement of enemies, that sort of thing. You can use the octocamo and the robot in later acts, this is true. But the CQC and the other soldiers was what I was really excited about, and neither of that has much use after a certain point in the game.

Ah, those.

I used the Mk. II and Octocamo alot in 3-5.

I did miss working with rebels and CQC though.

Mainly cause I hate fighting those ****ing Gekko.

I totally forgot about the rail gun. Yeah that would make it alot easier to kill them. I was trying to beat the game again w/o getting alerts but those gekkos are a problem

Yea, I'd usually cripple 'em with the rail gun. Then make the brains asplode using the anti-tank thing.

Also, MGS4 has Altair, that makes it even MORE awesome.

Maybe it was my heart being too cold, or maybe it was the unbelievable amount of time it took her to die. I knew it was sad for Snake, but I seriously just didn't feel a whole lot.

Also I almost started to get annoyed at how long it took for Big Boss to kick the bucket. It dragged that scene out for so... long....

I hold that MGS3 was the most powerful to me.
