if this is serious. . . you're an idiot. go buy the $100-$150 model at your local guitar store and see if 1: you like playing bass, 2: you are any good at it. . . before you go spend that kinda dough on a bass.

You really want to spend over $1000 on your first bass?
You should get a beater bass to play on for a while to see if you're serious about it.
There's no need for a beginner to have a bass like that.

I would not recommend a Thunderbird as a first bass. They're very heavy and aren't balanced right. If you don't hang on to the neck...down it goes.

I thought you said this would be your first bass "ever".
But anyway, if you have that kind of money to spend? screw it!! go for broke! But there are better basses out there in the 1K + price tag. Basess that are lot more versatile, comfortable (as another poster mentioned) and quite honestly better sounding.
Look around try as many basses as needed until you find one that feels just right. Good luck.

Get the Geddy Lee Jazz Bass.
Its not just epic, it's Rush Epic.
Plus, I played it at my local music store and loved it...now if only I could afford it...

Go to a guitar store and play a lot of basses and find one is comfortable, etc etc, standard response.
And some suggestions:
Ibanez SR500 (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SR500BM) - awesome bass for ~$500 if you aren't looking to spend a whole lot on a decent bass. bartolini pickups are very nice on this one. very light and a slender neck
Peavey Cirrus 4 or 5 string, - these are usually 1400-1600, but if you are spending over 1k, these are extremely top of the line quality
warwick thumb (1700), warwick corvette (1000)
Schecter stiletto 4 string or 5 string - lots of different models of this, around 500-600, great basses for the price
