Sounds fun, doesn't it? :D

As part of a course I'm talking called Social Web, we have to give a brief presentation on a social networking website we are familiar with. Since RockBand.com will be undergoing a huge overhaul in the coming weeks and will be set up to help players network with each other, I figured this would be the perfect website to give a presentation on, considering I visit everyday (the presentation is Dec. 6, btw).

I had a good idea about what I will talk about, but I wanted to get your thoughts on what I should potentially include in the presentation (obvious stuff, aside). :)

Well, what does the project/assignment include?

As far as I know most social networking sites like MySpace or Facebook, people generally communicate across age standard and group standard means, with Rock Band it breaks down age, demographic, social group barriers. It can happen in those otehr sites as well, but varied demographic crosses are more common here.

Given even in its prototype state we're using now you can fill out an extensive profile sheet, maintain your own blog, and participate in a forum... I think we've got the goods for a social networking site. Yes, it's focused on a game, but it's still got the tools required.

Ahh, halcyon days of youth... like when I did a sociology paper in college in 1996 about spam and declared it was a fad and would soon go away! ...I got an A. I'm glad professors don't have time machines.

Well, what does the project/assignment include?

The class syllabus is pretty crappy, but basically, you just need to give an overview on it (i.e. history, how it works, moderation, encouraging participation) and then relate it to the topic for the week (the topic for my week is the vague "social impact of Social Web"). But yeah, that looks like it shouldn't be hard to do at all.

I'm just looking for some other ideas on how to think outside the box, maybe some interesting stuff that isn't immediately obvious to include in my presentation.

This site breaks those age/race/class barriers because it is more focused on discussion and less emphasis (on the wrong sylAble) on age and social status. There are very few scapegoats here, as well, which means we don't have facebook or myspace style "wars." Trolls are dealt with little acknowledgement and most of the time get their posts turned into running jokes or excuses to post half naked women (thanks for telling me about that, Deezy). I don't even look at my profile or edit it or keep up with it. I don't even know if I have any friend requests. I created it with my account and haven't been back except for one time to edit some typos.

I would talk about the phenomenon of "old hats" in online communities. What I mean is that the longer one particiaptes on the forum, the more one develops an online identity. I seem to remember a post a while ago asking which forum members you "trusted" more than others.

There are a few names that are synonymous with rockband for me now, and I'm not speaking of sean or apples. I've seen it time and time again on messageboards. It'd be an interesting story.

We've covered all of that in so much depth in lectures, I would probably have to relate it specifically to Rock Band to make it worth including (and it might be better to talk more about how the Rock Band community site will interact with the game, since I only have 10 minutes). But yeah, thanks for the ideas. I like where your head's at. ;)

Be sure to talk about how cool that Atsumi person is. ;)

I'd talk about how it's going to be implemented with the game later on. That's a really neat feature.

The thing is... these community features will supposedly be deployed on launch date, giving me 2 weeks to actually explore these new features. My presentation isn't until Dec. 6. ;)

You can do a lot in two weeks. Save a paragraph or so for the new features.

I think if me and my band do enough in 2 weeks, I should go through our band's profile page and photo shoot. Maybe show off some of our sick stats.

Here's an interesting thing of note: one of our assignment's for class is to play a copy of WoW (that was bought for each of us!) and then write a summary of the social experience it provides. :)

I think I want to get into that class.

Where is it again? :p

Certainly beats having to run Monte Carlo simulations like I'm doing now...

Reminds me of my Development of Motion Pictures class. Every day we watched bad ass movies for class. Examples: Full Metal Jacket, The Wall, The Godfather, Star Wars (IV), and Apocalypse Now. We had to write opinion pieces on them.

I just hope this community doesn't collapse when the game comes out!

Sign me up for this class! Is there an online version? WoW though, but for free? Now that's awesome! You should also discuss the future impact of rockband.com on gaming and networking too. Hope you get an A on the report!
