How would you change it?
Thrash: Fine As is, but Testament might replace Slayer or even Megadeth.
Grunge: Replace Soundgarden with STP, or another band that sounds more like Grunge.

I'd replace Alice in Chains with STP, since Alice in Chains is a metal band, not a grunge band.

No, AIC is definitely grunge. They are the most "grunge" of any of the four really. Listen to Down in a Hole and tell me that thats metal. The brooding lyrics, distorted guitar and heavy bass make them grunge. If any of the four shouldnt be grunge its definitely Pearl Jam. Their lyrics rarely match up with their supposed grunge image. This isnt to say that they arent an awesome band, just not really grunge.

agreed. i always figured pearl jam got in because they looked kinda dirty and smelly.
remember when bands like candlebox and collective soul started getting lumped in with this?

I would remove Anthrax and Metallica. Anthrax was more punk than anything. Metallica was a bit proggy. For me it would be:
Megadeth
Slayer
Exodus
Testament
I would remove Pearl Jam from the big four of grunge. Really, EVERY grunge band could easily replace them on the list, whether it be STP, Melvins, or Mudhoney, Pearl Jam was just way too damn commercial. Kurt Cobain even implied it in his Journals.

Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Pantera (no particular order)
I'm not a big grunge fan.

How are Pearl Jam commercial, exactly? They spent most of the 90s (when their audience was its largest) giving as few interviews and tv appearances as possible and refusing to make music videos. That whole Ticketmaster thing severely limited their options for touring, to the point where there were times they couldn't even play in America. That one year they put out a live album for every date on one of their tours was awesome for fans, but was one of the least cost effective moves ever. They've spent their whole career making decisions that cost them money.
I can see them being one of the more accessible of the big grunge bands, and alot of awful singers out there have spent their careers trying to sound like Eddie Vedder, but that's not the same thing as being commercial.

Anthrax Metallica Megadeth and Slayer will ALWAYS be the best of thrash.
Metallica has a few prog songs but is totally rooted in the thrash.
Proof:
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Metallica - Master of Puppets/Kill 'em All
Anthrax - Among the Living
Slayer - Just about any album

I would probably swap Anthrax or maybe Slayer for Testament Exodus might have a chance of replacing either of them as well. Megadeth and Metallica will certainly retain their places in the big 4. Don't care much about grunge tho so I wont comment on it.

Slayer and Testament have always been interchangeable depending on where you are from and what magazine's were naming the big 4 of thrash. Around here it was Testament over Slayer.

I am going to have to disagree with this statement. Alice in Chains in my opinion is more metal. They have darker lyrics and harder guitar cords than some of the other bands. Plus AIC had done a lot with metal based bands and 80's bands that grunge in someway destroyed. Here are the bands:
Iggy Pop
Van Halen
Poison
Extreme
Anthrax
Megadeth
Slayer
Ozzy Osbourne
Metallica (almost)
Ann Wilson (Heart)!

since i never cared much for AiC i've always liked to lay more of the blame for post-grunge on them. most of the post-grunge bands i've heard sound a lot more like AiC than nirvana, plus they seem to have more of a (very mainstream) metal background.

You know, the more I think about it the more I realize that Alice in Chains is metal. Its just that the grunge side of AIC is so much better than the metal that I tend to ignore that part. Down in a Hole, No Excuses and Got Me Wrong (total grunge) are much better songs in my opinion than the more metal songs. So, I would still leave them in.
Pearl Jam was grouped in with grunge because of their timing and image. They happened to appear around the same time that Nirvana exploded and the flannel and long dirty hair matched up with Kurt's image. Their lyrics are however very positive generally and the guitar distortion is much too clean to be considered grunge IMO. I would probably replace them with Hole.
Hole is essentially the female version of Nirvana. The guitar is often very dead sounding or distorted. The lyrics drip with sarcasm and self loathing, and personify grunge. I do believe Kurt had a large hand in the songwriting for Hole. Live Through This was their best album and definitely the most grunge heavy. It was released the week Kurt died. After that it was all downhill and we got the likes of Celebrity Skin. But at their peak, I think Hole was more grunge than Pearl Jam.

Pantera? They were not part of the "Big 4" by any standards. It's really obvious they were inspired by bands like Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer, but I wouldn't call them peers.
They weren't Thrash until 1989, which the genre started it's decline. It's honestly like calling Metallica a NWOBHM band.

i think i've heard one song from each of those. they sounded much more AiC-ish than nirvana-ish to me.
that "voodoo" song is hilarious!

So the big four are:
Slayer
Anthrax
Metallica
Megadeth
and
Nirvana
Alice in Chains
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Is this correct?
I wouldn't replace any of the thrash choices, they are the ideal ones. Of the grunge ones, I probably would include Stone Temple Pilots over Pearl Jam.

Replacing Megadeth from the big 4 thrash and replacing Soundgarden from the big 4 grunge are both laughable.

why can't u just make grunge a big 5 and add STP, it would make more sense then substituting, and i think the big thrash 4 are fine the way they are
