View Full Version : Um ... what about Country DLC?(*ducks*)

Oh, man, I'm gonna get flamed for this one ...
Look, the country music awards were last night. They've got a *lot* of fans. It got me thinking. Always a dangerous thing.
I grew up in a province where they had both kinds of music -- country *and* western!
So once in awhile I am reminded that there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of music fans out there who love country music. Who really only listen to country music.
As a musician, I also have to acknowledge that there are some country songs that are technically challenging, that are really damned catchy, that blur the line between rock/popular/country, and that basically are just pretty darned good general songs that everybody knows and loves. Add in bluegrass for the technical guitar headaches and the funky non-standard chord changes (old timey bluegrass breaks all the rules you thought you knew) and you've got the makings of -- dare I say it -- some great social/party situations!
I mean, "Southern Rock" is really just "Country" with the serial numbers filed off. It is all a big continuum.
I'm just sayin', is all!
The instruments will be there. The software will be there. Everything will be there.
So, why not tap into that market? Why not get some more money in Harmonix' pocket? Why not get some more fans?
Why not some country DLC?

Nah just kidding. For me, it would be totally cool with me because I would simply ignore all of that DLC. Put it on the disc and it'll be just like more fall out boy to me. So yea. DLC is fair game for all types of things in my view

Hey, I'd be up for it! I mean as long as they put in actual *good* country and not the "pop with a southern accent" they have today, it'd be cool. Especially bluegrass, which is one of my favorite types of music in general. HOWEVER, I do think that the number of really great country songs that utilize all the RB instruments would be limited.
Also, I'm glad I'm in before this gets moved to "Ultimate Setlist".

I'm sure that there will be Country DLC, eventually. At this point I think it's just about focus and clarity of message. Harmonix' passion is rock, and that's the core of the Rock Band effort.
And while there's a bottomless supply of rock music to bring to the game, I'm sure country music is the next logical step. Maybe we'll get some Johnny Cash or other genre crossers even before "the next step."

Patience, grasshopper :)
Though you may have to settle for genre-crossing country/rock at first. Flirtin' With Disaster and Green Grass & High Tides show that they'll do that sort of thing.

Okay, maybe Johnny Cash. But if I knew they were focusing on developing playable country albums and put other ones I'm dying to play put on hold for awhile I'd cringe. No offense to people who enjoy country just I can't stand it.

They'd be crazy not to, I believe Country is still the most popular musical genre in the country. Throwing in some modern classics that everyone knows (Friends in Low Places, etc.) that lend themselves well to drunken caterwauling, and you'd even get some non-Country listeners downloading too. Hell, I hate most Country (because my fiance listens to it nonstop) but I'd even check out some of it.

Country would be great for DLC, and Harmonix is interested in spanning lots of genres. Nothing I would want, but my wife would definitely download some good country offerings.

Keep in mind that Harmonix was behind the Karaoke Revolution: Country Edition. So they're not adverse to doing country music.
I think the main problem though is that Rock Band's entire focus is rock. The characters on stage will be wearing rock clothes, doing rock animations, to... country music? It'd be a hideous mismatch.
What we may see is a spinoff / expansion disk, like the KR:CE, which focuses on country and has country-themed animations and creation parts and interfaces with less gnarly skulls all over it.

Yes, because all country music is like that
Southern Rock would be great, that's why I'm glad about CCR, some Skynyrd would be nice, but yeah if they would pick the right country songs then it would be a blast for playing on rock band and I'm sure they'll tap into that more and more.

the CMT logo has been plastered all over Rock Band since a long while ago alongside the MTV and VH1 logos.
I had a post about this a few months ago, but I'm too lazy to search for it.

I would not object to it, although I might not personally get much of it.

Yeah..what he said.
I have no prob with it. I do like a few songs though it's not really my thing. But hey, the more fans, the more we will all benefit in the long run.

Everyone go listen to "Willie and Family Live" double LP and tell me that's not Rock 'n Roll.
Whiskey River
I Can Get Off on You
Bloody Mary Morning
These songs would be a blast to play.

DUDE, totally. Garth Brooks is one of the last real country singers, IMO, and I've always thought Rodeo was a kick ass song.
BTW, if you're joking, that's cool, too. I'm serious, though. :p

On the one hand, it is "Rock" Band, and the focus, as far as venues, styles, clothes, etc. has been rock.
But, that would be easy (I think...) to update via DLC (new styles: country, country-rock, whatever; new clothes: cowboy hats and boots, vests with fringes, whatever; new venues: the obligatory "In Cahoots" bar, a takeoff of Bob's Country Bunker complete with chicken wire and fans throwing beer bottles, whatever - and yes, I am stereotyping a bit with my examples).
I wouldn't be adverse to it, as long as they picked songs that are both (a) fun to play for all four parts and (b) challenging. Rock genres - in general - have more of an emphasis on the music, whereas country genres - in general - use the music more as a vehicle to emphasis the vocals.
In that sense, I would rather they focus more, initially, on DLC for the rock genres, and once they have us swimming in options there, then branch out more into the country genres.
And if they wanted to release Rosanne Cash's "My Baby Thinks He's a Train" as DLC, I would probably be among the first to throw down a few Microsoft Points to add it to my library.

Country for DLC would be a whole lot better than a rip off "Rock Band: Country Expansion" Where you would have to buy another CD. I definitely wouldn't buy the expansion CD if there was one, but i'd be up to download a few tunes if they were up for DLC. Plus I live in a hick town so everyone would enjoy playing it.
