here's a short list I came up with that includes some examples
Black Metal (Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Venom, Mayhem, Darkthrone)
Celtic Punk (Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, The Pogues, The Tossers, Blood Or Whiskey)
Country Rock (Drive-By Truckers, Wilco, Dixie Chicks, Big & Rich, Neil Young)
Death Metal (Death, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Deicide)
Folk Punk (Against Me!, Billy Bragg, Attack In Black)
Gothic Rock (Bauhaus, Bella Morte, The Cult, Siouxie & the Banshees, London After Midnight)
Hardcore Punk (Agent Orange, Bad Brains, Black Flag, Comeback Kid, Poison The Well)
Horror Punk (The Misfits)
Mathcore (Fear Before The March Of Flames, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, The Dillenger Escape Plan, Meshuggah, Converge)
Post-Hardcore (Alexisonfire, Underoath, Taking Back Sunday, The Used, Thursday)
Rockabilly (Elvis, The Stray Cats, Hot Rod Lincoln, Chris Isaak)
Surf Rock (Beach Boys, The Ventures, Dick Dale, Link Wray, The Surfaris)
Viking Metal (Amon Amarth, Finntroll, Wintersun)

post-punk, 2nd-wave emo, 1st-wave screamo, and doom metal.
like Minor Threat, Rites Of Spring, etc?
we have a decent amount of post-punk in the game right now, but more would be good
some might say Mastodon is doom metal, although I prefer sludge metal for them

minor threat's hardcore punk and rites of spring are actually 1st-wave emo... 2nd-wave is sunny day real estate, braid, etc.
what bands do you consider post-punk in the game? the only one i can think of that really fits into the genre is talking heads.

Post-Punk (5 bands, 11 tracks)
Interpol
The Material
The Police (6)
Sonic Youth (2)
The Sounds
although some of these are borderline.... The Police could be more New Wave, Sonic Youth could be Alternative...The Material are listed here because it's on their MySpace, Wikipedia, and website

i don't remember what the material or the sounds are like, but i don't remember either being post-punk. i can see where you're coming from with the other three, but i wouldn't really consider them good examples of the genre... then again, it is a tough genre to pin down...

I chose celtic/folk punk. Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, The Pogues and The Real McKenzies are long overdue for some inclusion into the RB arena.

here's like 60 metal songs in the game, and one ska song

this
the only bands in the past few weeks that could fly under the very top level of the "metal" genre are Testament (Thrash metal) and NIN (Industrial metal)
everything else goes under the "Rock" or "Alternative" umbrella

in RB2 or this one? there's like 2 metal DLC packs, 3 songs in the rock band track list, and 9 in RB2. TWO SONGS out of all of those are death metal or close to it, and the songs in the RB and RB2 tracklist are closer to hard rock than metal. metal is a huge genre, ska doesn't consist of many bands at all. i'm fine with ska as long as we can see death metal as well.

"Metal" is a top level classification
"Ska" is sub-class under the "Punk" top-level classification
I would say anyways
agreed, Ska DOES need more!
I'm with this guy.
Oh, and whatever category They Might Be Giants falls in.

third wave ska is closely related to punk, 2nd wave and 1st wave are totally different

not trying to be a wiener, because i appreciate your time and effort, but ska is NOT a sub-class under punk, especially because it predates punk by over a decade. some bands combined the 2, and there was a unified scene in the UK in the 70s, but they did emerge separately.
just sayin'

anyway. most "pure" ska today would be pretty boring for guitar, but a real workout for bass and sometimes drums

All of them! Every genre that could work well in RB deserves some love by HMX, but I'd especially like to see these, with my most wanted artists following their respective genre:
Ska: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The English Beat, General Public, The Specials, Reel Big Fish, Sublime
Folk-Punk: The Pogues, Violent Femmes
Doom Metal: Pentagram, Acid Bath, Megasus (Am I one of the few that thoroughly enjoyed Red Lottery in GHII?)
Goth Rock: The Cure, Bauhaus/Peter Murphy/Love & Rockets/Tones on Tail, Joy Division, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Fields of the Nephilim, The Cult, Sisters of Mercy, Alien Sex Fiend, Christian Death (Fat chance..), Gene Loves Gezebel, Tuxedomoon
Emo: Sunny Day Real Estate, At The Drive-In, Rites of Spring, Fugazi (Although their genre is debatable...)
Hardcore Punk: Black Flag, Bad Brains, Flipper, Dead Kennedys, The Dickies, Hüsker Dü
Horror Punk: The Misfits, The Cramps, The Horrorpops, Tiger Army, early AFI
Rockabilly: The Polecats, Stray Cats, Chris Isaak (Good call, Tony!), some Morrissey
Surf: Bow Wow Wow, Dick Dale & His Del-Tones, Jan & Dean, Beach Boys
non-NiN Industrial: Type O Negative, Ministry, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult
Goth is the genre I'd most like to see filled, however. It boggles my mind that HMX put a lot of time and effort into making a goth style and an extensive collection of appropriate clothing, but not a single track to complement it.

good to see some classic 30STM suggested
the classic stuff I would say is Progressive
while stuff from A Beautiiful Lie would be Alternative

i'd really like to see more shoegazer bands in rock band 2. i've gotten more and more into the genre as times gone on, and lush are now one of my most anticipated new bands for rb2. i only hope other bands from the genre will follow.

Ya I'd say the stuff from A Beautiful Lie sounds a little more mainstream.
I like the older stuff

Power Metal in a big way. Stuff like Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Nightwish, Rhapsody, Hammerfall.
That would make my day. Especially Sonata Arctica's "Wolf and Raven". That would be full of crazy awesome.
