What the hell just happened?

We're talking Cronenberg, not Burroughs' original.

i never have lunch naked, i mean, it'd just be embarrassing to spill ketchup in certain areas, and you wouldnt be able to use your shirt tail to clean it off.

You seem to be exterminating all rational thought very well.

I'm sorry, but I can't read your obscenity. All I see are asterisks and ellipses.

It's weird to think about the fact that Cronenberg went from making completely nonsense, bad, bizarre as **** b-films to making amazing masterpieces like A History of Violence and Eastern Promises.

I wouldn't call his latest works "masterpieces," but they're certainly more accessible.

I really have to sit down with Naked Lunch again as I haven't seen it since its original theatrical run. I did pick up that nifty Criterion double disc DVD a while back, but haven't popped it in yet. Too bad it didn't come with a free can of mugwump jism...

AHOV and Eastern Promises are great films, but yes they are among Cronenberg's most accessible. Even so, they still contain threads of his preoccupation with "the new flesh", and he thinks of new ways to integrate his fascination with bodily corruption within the framework of more traditional crime narratives.

I can't hang with the notion that before AHOV he used to make "completely nonsense, bad, bizarre as **** b-films". He's got quite a body of work under his belt, and a ton of that material is psychologically rich stuff that transcends its "horror" trappings. The guy didn't just start making masterpieces recently, he just started making masterpieces that you can also recommend to your parents.

I disagree. While those two films are really great films, I prefer his earlier work. "Naked Lunch" is a masterpiece, in my opinion, and severely underrated to boot. Even more underrated, however, is "Videodrome". Go check it out if you're a Cronenberg fan, it might be his best work.

^ great gamertag!

Yeah, I agree that "Videodrome" is pretty much the best Cronenberg film. Talk about another film that received an awesome release from Criterion, right down to the faux Beta videotape case it came in. Definitely pick that DVD up if you can find it!

"Long live the new flesh!"

Holy ****! I didn't know about the Criterion edition! I'm all over that!

Thanks, by the way, in reference to my GT. Are you familiar with hortas, or just horticulture?

Definitely the former! I actually call a Trek aficionado friend of mine "The HortaCulturalist", so I immediately appreciated the reference!

Back to Videodrome, I think the Criterion edition is still in print, so you should be able to dig it up easily. Here's a link (http://www.amazon.com/Videodrome-Criterion-Collection-James-Woods/dp/B0002DB50E/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1218647648&sr=8-1) to it on Amazon. The transfer is amazing - way better than the old Universal disc.

Wow, that is really cool. Just ordered myself a copy.

As a side, I'm glad there are other Trek fans on these boards. I love hortas! I wish they'd made another appearance in any of the other shows... "Devil in the Dark" is one of my top 10 original series episodes, without a doubt.

Sorry for derailing the discussion, everyone.

Yeah, Spock's mind meld with it really freaked me out when I was a kid!!

*tries to think of a way to redirect thread* Genevieve Bujold played Captain Janeway for one day of filming on Voyager, and she was in this nifty movie called Dead Ringers! :D

Pretty much, with the possible exception of Fast Company!

If his films didn't tweak with my brain, I would be sorely disappointed!

I have just one question: where are the stones?

Oh, and I'll need a Multipass.
