Will I be counted against singing if I decide to sing say... an octave lower than the actual song? I was born with a lower register, and don't want to be forced to sing in squeaky falsetto.

i have seen in videos where people have said that it doesnt matter the octave

from what i know, all you have to do is sing the note. it doesnt matter how high or low you sing it. (we aren't all freddy mercury)

Confirmed. The pitch is graded, the octave doesn't matter at all. During spoken sections, speech detection is used rather than any pitch detection at all.
You should be all set.
