Its not 80s Metallica for sure, but its acceptable. I wish James would stop trying to sing and try to go back to his old school style.

Seems like Kirk was finally ungrounded and allowed to do solos, at least. Would make a fun song.

looks like a lot of fun. live metallica is good, but it's not quite the same as if I heard an album version.

Still rather underwhelming compared to classic Metallica. I don't really like where the vocals have gone in modern Metallica.

Uhh yeah, I'm with you. Not feeling it at all and curious when that 'Old' sound is suppose to kick in. Maybe if James would just stop thinking he's a singer and Lars would put some backbone back in it. I think their getting too old or something.

It sounds like it's in between the Black Album and AJFA. Sort of. If the majority of the album sounds like that I'll probably buy it. Hard to judge from one song, but it sounds better than Load, Reload, or St. Anger at least.

It has actually been described as the "missing link between AJFA and The Black Album".

I'm willing to be open-minded about it still, then. AJFA was a metal album, and TBA came out of nowhere as a rock and roll album(a rather good one, but the sudden shift in style was too abrupt). Mainly, like people have already mentioned, James should go back to being a front man rather than a "vocalist" and not worry about all the crap that Bob Rock stuffed in his head. Lars should maybe think about watching Metallica perform from inside of his money bin and let someone else do the drumming on tour. I do like that Trujillo is very audible in that clip, I think he's a good fit for the rest of the band and loved his stage presence back when I saw them last in 2003.

Not feeling it with that one, maybe they aren't capable of putting out classic caliber stuff anymore. :(

I see what you mean about Lars. Maybe he's just getting old, but he doesn't have the stamina he used to. However, that makes me think the studio version will be much better. I'll wait for that.
Also, I thought Kirk did very well.

Kirk's performances have never flagged for me. I like him as much on stage now as I did back in the 80s, he still has enthusiasm and rarely misses a spot. I don't know that Lars is as bad as he's made out to be, but he's never been the best and now the years are definitely showing on stage. I know he'll break up the band before he takes a backseat to anybody but I guess my real issue is that they probably couldn't do a full-out thrash performance on stage even if they wanted to, which is really a shame.
Slayer hasn't lost a beat since the old days, but I have noticed that their setlists have steadily decreased in size in the modern shows I go to. I doubt Metallica could get away with this since there's too much across the different albums they feel obliged to play live, but if it would help their live act I would be willing to sacrifice a few songs if they worked in some of the stuff that hasn't seen the light since the old days.

Not bad at all for the 1st live performance of a brand new song...
I can't wait to hear this on the Album along with the rest...
This will be a very good album as Ric Rubin will harnest that classic Metallica sound on that Album. September can't get here quick enough...

Gonna be sweet!!!!

I hope you guys know that this isn't what is "supposedly" coming to Rock Band. The song that is coming is their first single to be released soon, called "The Day That Never Comes"
It is ALSO said that Cyanide is supposed to be the WORST song on the album, so there's still PLENTY of good material down the pipes.

It's more modern crap, in my opinion. It's not the old Metallica, as promised. It's not even as good as Metallica (The Black Album) either. This is more Load/Reload crap. Slightly better than St. Anger, but it's not what we were promised.
They should just stop recording new stuff and tour constantly on the old material.

It's not a bad song, its just not Metallica. James needs to stop singing, and they need to just go back to their roots. Then again, they won't. Kirk is still going strong, but everyone else just doesn't seem into it. They should just call it quits. They can't even play their old stuff right now.

It sounded pretty good to me...all things considered (poor audio recording, first live preformance, etc.)
Definitely better than anything since AJFA (I know, a lot of people liked TBA...but IMO, it was just as bad as Load/Reload).
I hate to say it, but I really don't care much for Trujillo. He's a great bassist, and I like his sound....but I can hardly stand watching him play. He just doesn't fit in. I don't know, maybe some day I'll get used to him.
Anyway, at least Bob Rock is gone. IMO he was the worst thing that happened to Metallica!

I hear a bit of the slow part of blackened in there (particularly after the solo)

IMO, a step above St. Anger, and that is it.
Far from the Metallica I like

Not a bad song. Not a bad Metallica song. But, not a thrash song.
Its okay, itll take a few album listens to discern the details. It doesnt get my blood going though, at first listen.

www.blabbermouth.net has already announced that the new cd will be released to gh:III. whether or not this means RB gets any songs I dont know, seems to me RB has pissed somebody off in Metallica's group of people. First day RB game comes out we get 4 total songs, 3 DLC and 1 in game track, since then we have heard all kinds of rumors including fuel coming as DLC an have never seen anything and there are reports all over that GH is getting a full game from metallica plus the entire new album, all I can say is this is BS!!!
ps in answer to your question I love this new track!!!

very true I didnt think of that and We all know that battery is what were looking for! More from Puppets and Justice would be sweet. Well thank you for shining some light on this glim moment for me. Also, I think I disagree with the people in this thread saying they should just quit and tour with the old stuff. I kind of think its a blessing that we still get new stuff from them to listen to, there alot of bands out there that are no more, that I would love to get some new music from, pantera for example. I have been going to metallica concerts for almost 20 years now and I have never went to one I did not enjoy!

The main riff sounded very much like rage against the machine, but I do actually like the song and am more looking forward to the new album now. I will never expect them to completely go back to their old style like everyone has been requesting because they're a band that wants to move forwards, not backwards.

Indeed. I was debating this with a friend not too long ago. I think if they released Ride the Lightning under the name Death Magnetic and changed the old track names to fit the new album's and replaced James' old vocals with his current growl people would still say it's not as good as their old stuff. Metalheads are a strange brood, they are very wishy-washy when it comes to anything released after a spike in a band's popularity. If it sounds too much like the old, it's unoriginal rehash. If it sounds too different, they sold out/can't hack it.

Not so much that HMX pissed off Metallica, as Metallica went to were they could get paid more [just rumor and speculation]. That would also fit the Metallica of recent, too. Lar$ likes the cash...
In regards to my "tour on old stuff" comment, that's just what I want. I do not expect them to, I'd bet they never will. But, for me, it would be ideal. It means I could see them more, and the songs I want played would be. And I wouldn't have to deal with Metallica slowly destroying what faith I have in them by releasing bad albums.
