So, if you listen closely to the snazzy new videos on rockband.com, you can here that the spots with the drum fills are muted. I think. ("Here It Goes" and "Suffragette City" supply pretty good examples of this.)

So, if this is the case, are we to assume that, when playing solo on guitar or vocals, the fills will remain ... unfilled?

Exactly what I would assume. So why the weird drop in the videos?

The game is on autoplay. You can hear it ding when they got stars.

No, just becuase the game throws a free form at you doesnt mean there was one at that spot in the master recording. Its random I believe.

I think the OP's question has been answered, but the more I've played the demos the more I wish the freeform fills had a ride or a hi-hat in them.

Most of the time I'd rather just keep time or do something a little tastier in a lot of the freeform fills, and being forced to play something on the toms and snare can be kind of unmusical. I know for most people it's a blast and I enjoy watching it, but for me I'd love to have the option of just grooving through some of them.

oh damn! That's what that was. I was watching the Paranoid video and there were sections where the drums just cut off yet the drummer was drummming furiously... Makes since now... those are the fills....

BTW, just saw the Black Hole Sun vid. Holy crap that was awesome when they introduce the singer... Beautiful animations (when he points up to the sky and then throws his head back). I had to watch it 2 or 3 times :D. They did such a good job with the presentation of this game!
