I was just curious if any of you out there were doom metal fans. The only person on this board I know that does is HungryFreak, but other than that, I haven't seen any people in the History of Rock forum that are doom fans.

So, is there anyone out there into Electric Wizard, Sleep, Sunn O))), or any other doom bands? I find that, of all the metal subgenres, it has the smallest following.

Anyone?

i'm a huge doom metal fan.
i've played in several bands (mostly of the more "southern sludge" persuasion, due to my location) and enjoy bands ranging from pentagram to nortt to black boned angel.

Well, as you pointed out, WBT, I love myself some doom. The genre doesn't get as much respect as it deserves, people are too impatient for a lot of it, I find. It's absolutely mesmerizing, though, when done correctly.

Very much so. I've never met anyone in person who can handle doom metal. I guess it's their patience.

I'm a fan of stoner/doom/sludge metal bands such as The Sword, sHeavy, Black Cobra, Acid King, Witchcraft, Saviours, and High on Fire.

Its hit or miss for me, some is good, some bores the hell out of me. My old band wrote a song that was really slow and heavy... and later called it Doom ahaha

I wouldn't call myself a huge doom metal fan, but I enjoy listening to Candlemass, sHeavy, the Sword, Krux and Solitude Aeturnus.

i haven't heard the new one yet, but the split 7" with unearthly trance and the other LP are both pretty cool.
in my opinion, minsk basically sound like a good version of isis.

I'm not big into the genre, so I'm going to be completely honest and say I have no idea. So read this review of their latest album, and you tell me! :p

i would say minsk is as much atmospheric sludge (ala neurosis or isis) as they are doom metal...
they're definitely not doing anything groundbreaking, but they're a fairly solid band if you like that sort of stuff. i think they blow isis away, but i'm not an isis fan at all.

I want to see them live so badly! If only just to have a shirt. The only issue is that there is nowhere to look at tour dates of theirs. I don't even know if they're touring, but I would guess that they are, seeing how Witchcult Today is still a pretty new album.

I would love to have a shirt, also, but all of the ones on Rise Above's website are sold out. It also sucks more because all of their vinyl reissues came out this year, but with the shipping costs and conversions and everything, one album was $50.

it was pretty awesome. i remember they started out with "dopethrone" and then went into "funeralopolis", so that was killer.

"dopethrone" was their latest at the time with "let us prey" recorded but not released yet, so they did a pretty good bit from those two albums.

they were really nice folks. we got to have pizza and smokes with them after the show because we told them we had driven 10 hours to see them (we opted not to mention the sebadoh show in nashville we had also planned the trip around).

I dont like it too much. My buddy WhiffleBall over here is trying to get me into it.

Here are a few things that I like:

The Sword (The Band)
Funerapolis (The Song)
Dragonaut (The Song)
Athiest (The Band)
At The Gates (The Band)

Other than that, Im not a fan. From those bands, I only like a few of there songs anyways. Mainly only The Sword though.

Hungryfreak

Atheist and At the Gates aren't doom metal. They're just awesome, especially Atheist, haha.

Check out High on Fire. I put up a compilation on ye olde music blog, so you can take a look there. They aren't exactly doom metal, they're a bit faster, but they're still great and doom sound is evident throughout their work. Matt Pike was also in Sleep before.

Atheist and At the Gates, as Hungryfreak said, are death metal, not doom, but they are still awesome. Electric Wizard, The Sword, and Sleep are doom, though.

In addition to High On Fire, some other epic choices are YOB and sHEAVY. For some retro doom, Pentagram and Candlemass are good. Kongh and Ocean Chief (thank you, Hungryfreak) are some really good obscure bands.

Drone doom is also good. I only know three bands (BORIS, Earth, and Sunn O))), the most well-known in the genre), but they are three awesome bands. It's definitely much more artsy stuff than most music.

Hungryfreak
08-24-2008, 11:46 PM
Dopesmoker is an epic stone drone song. The hour long doom/drone songs are much less accessible material, though I personally love them. Absolutago by Boris and Dopesmoker by Sleep are the ones I know. I've heard of a couple others, though haven't listened to them. "VO1D" by Hlidolf and "The Great Barrier Reerer" by Bongripper. I really only know these from a 'longest song discussion thread, though, haha.

Been listening to Wormphlegm some more (since I learned their only album was exclusive to a limited number of vinyls, and so I'm justified in downloading it) and they're pretty damn good. Nice and crushing, like anything doom should be. I just wish their songs lasted longer, haha.

I feel as if I owe you doom metal fans an apology.

I too, had made the common misconception involving doom and death metal - that they were the same thing in regards to vocals, but the vids posted in this thread helped clarify this. I orginally thought Doom Metal was just Death Metal at half speed, but I can see its much more than that - its much better too. So apologise to you doom metal fans; its Death Metal and all its digusting grunting that gets my hate.

I'm not familiar with really any drone that isn't metal. I'll take some suggestions, though.

Oh, and the reason I have so many plays for Sleep and Sunn O))) is because I was listening to that while sleeping recently and when I updated my iPod with some new music, I accidentally had it update my profile with all of those plays.

I do listen to some other stuff, it's just that doom is what I listen to the most.

Haven't heard non-metal drone, either. I would definitely be interested in giving it a try, though. Maybe you could get a compilation of some up (though within the next couple days, since I'm not sure I'll be able to download in Israel).

And I always listen to doom, grindcore, death or Zappa for the most part. It's a weird relationship, haha.

Oh my...

Burning Witch just came on as recommended for me on Last.fm. Here is a chronology of what's going through my mind:

"Hmm... pretty cool. I like the sound so far."
Vocals come in...
"WHAT THE ****?! Those vocals are horrible! Well, maybe they'll grow on me"
End of the song...
"Wow, that song owns. I'm definitely getting an album of theirs."

:) Those vocals are just amazing. I've never heard anything like them. Damn, if you haven't heard this band, check them out. Apparently they're Stephen O'Malley's (from Sunn O)))) first band. If you don't like the vocals, just stick with it until the end of the song. I was disgusted at first, but it really grew on me. They're quite unique.

i'll put some LoC on the next doom mix...

it's wrest (from leviathan, a solo black metal project) doing blackened doom metal... there's only one official album and two demos, but LoC is my favorite doom "band".

Haven't heard of Leviathan either. I look forward to hearing these guys, though.

i'm pretty sure i had a leviathan song on my 1st black metal mix for the blog... it may have been the 2nd.
i personally prefer lurker of chalice, but both are incredible... that dude drips with hatred.

Hatred is good. That always adds passion to the music.

This past week I've been listening to YOB and Middian daily because I just can't get enough of them. I'm glad to hear that YOB will be putting together a new record, I can't wait!

Wait... are you serious? I thought they split up in '06 after The Unreal Never Lived. Have they reformed?

Edit: OMG!!! They have reformed and their going to play some shows! Holy ****, I can't wait.

Haven't heard of them. :(

Although I'm an extremely large fan of doom metal, I'm still new to the genre. I'll check Corrupted out, though.

I'm a pretty big fan of The Sword and Baroness (are they technically Doom?) but I find bands like High On Fire to be a little too dense.
Anyone have any recommendations based on those preferences?

LMFAO! That's brilliant. I haven't heard much Harvey Milk, but I really liked the sound of that, so I'll have to check them out.

That video was epic, though haha. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, I saw that before. Great stuff. I love when the one just starts throwing the horns when the music gets heavier.

Anyone else excited for the first new Pagan Altar album in 6 years? I have a feeling it's going to be great just from the couple of songs that were revealed.

Also, if the new Briton Rites is anywhere near the debut, it could easily be a contender for album of the year.
