View Full Version : 360 HD DVD Users Won't Need USB Hub?

Hey guys, I know this probably isn't a big deal to too many people, but it looks as though users of the 360's HD DVD drive won't need to use the included USB hub in order to rock out as a foursome.

The HD DVD drive comes with two usb ports in back, and I just tested it with my GHII X-plorer guitar and the controller responds just fine. Looks like you'll be able to use the ports in back of the HD DVD drive for two intrsuments and the two ports in the front of the main console for the other two.

Again, not a big deal, but good news if you're looking to cut down on clutter and didn't fancy plugging in yet another accessory to your wall socket/power strip.

If I'm not mistaken, the HD-DVD drive has no external power. This means it will only work as a Rock Band hub if the instruments are low power devices. This is doubtful since the included hub is powered. Of course, it's still worth trying. Good luck.

Actually the HD DVD drive does have an external power source.

Plus keep in mind that I just used the usb port on the HD DVD drive to connect my GH II X-plorer controller.

That's the same controller I'm going to be using as a bass guitar in Rock Band.

Looks like this should work just fine.

but if the hub part of the drive is drawing power from the 360, the drums mic 2 guitars and then your hddvd drive will drain too much power from the 360 which is why they include a powered hub so theres less chance of the 360 overheating, just because one guitar works fine does not mean a whole army of controllers will, and with the way the 360 seems to like to fail I wont be taking that chance

Fair enough - but both the HUB and the HD DVD drive are powered, so there would be no extra burden on your 360 in either case, right?

In this case, though, "whole army of controllers" = "2 controllers", since there are two USB ports on the hd-dvd drive. In addition, the drive has been said to be externally powered, so there really should be no reason to worry about this.

Then yes, HD-DVD people don't need to worry about the hub.

The USB Hub comes with the game, so it isnt really a big deal is it?

It just saves people from having another thing plugged into their power strip.

You're forgetting a lot of people have the wireless network adapter. I have the HD DVD add-on and the wireless network adapter so I still only have 3 USB ports. But people next to their router, then yeah it would be okay. Though I'd still rather use the hub because I've connected things into the HD DVD player before and it always results dragging the player away somehow so its not too smart. I have my wireless network adapter, iPod, camera, and wireless headset charging through my 360 so I need the hub... badly.

Cool, cool. Again, fair enough.

It may not be a large number of users, but I'll I'm trying to do is point out that for those of us with an HD DVD drive and nothing plugged in to its ports, we can use it hook up the Rock Band peripherals in case we don't want the extra clutter of the hub.

No biggie, really.;)

I keep my HD-DVD unplugged usually(I don't need teh extra fan noise unless I'm watchinga HD-DVD. Plus I'm using a les paul along with the three in the bundle so I should be fine.

Uh, I'd just like to point out that Rock Band instruments probably don't need that much power at all. It's not like they have to spin a motor or something.
