Perhaps this isn't worth talking but curious to see if anyone knows.

I like to figure out how to make a synth effect for my bass playing.(The sound I'm going for is like the beginning of Closer to the Heart bass, or The Trees by Rush).

Is this only achievable by using a keyboard or could I do a specific set up for my bass(to emulate that sound)?

Buy a synth pedal. I just got one off of ebay that has a crapload of possible sounds:

I'm only a beginner, but the possibilities of sounds are nice to have for the future.

I ASSUME you are talking about a real bass. ;)

i would buy an effects processor for it, then you will have every effect you need, and can even use more than one at once

Yeah, that pedal is nice because if you can get it at the price I did ($90 shipped!!!) it's a huge deal. For all of the possible effects that it can give you, it's almost worth it to buy this (semi-) low end pedal rather than a high priced one that can't do quite as much.

Unless you want to daisy chain them like the last poster mentioned to get multiple effects at once.
