View Full Version : No Dragonforce in RB? Fine. What about these guys?

In honor of the Dragonforce pack on GHIII (and the heated discussions that brings), I would like to submit this band as a Rock Band substitute: Manowar label-mates, Rhapsody of Fire.

Since one of the biggest complaints about Dragonforce is that all of their music is "studio" and "sucks live", here is a live video of Rhapsody from Canada performing what I feel would be an AWESOME addition to RB and a reasonable substitute for Dragonforce.

I discovered Rhapsody of Fire about two months ago and I really like them. They seem really musically educated (even if their lyrics are all based around an original high-fantasy story ;) ) and a blast to play.

Um... They are so incredibly over the top.

I think that's why I like them so much :D

The word "epic" hardly seems adequate.

Holy Crap, Walrus... I haven't looked through all of their live vids. That song is badass live! Man... I WISH Harmonix would oblige us with these songs... Especially since we're getting that double-bass pedal expansion.

EDIT:
As an incentive to get HMX on this project, I will supply a loading screen fact (just to get the ball rolling):
Actor Christopher Lee appears as both the narrator and on backup vocals on Rhapsody of Fire's 2005 single, "The Magic of the Wizard's Dream".

Band is also known as just "Rhapsody" and though I love about 5 of their songs (holy thunderforce and emerald sword being two of them) 90% of their stuff sounds the same....

I've liked this band for about 3 or 4 years now, ever since I got into the "new age" or power metal. Land of Immortals was one of the first songs I heard by them and it got stuck in my head for days afterward.

I'd also love the song Kill to Live from the European band Firewind.

Is that Weird Al singing?

DragonForce is AWFUL.

EDIT: and so is that band.

At least in the first post, the primary melody is carried by a keyboard set to brass sounds. But yes, over the top, and yes fast, but no thanks.

I know this kind of epic power metal isn't for everyone. I can understand why people would dislike it so. But I think for those of us that can enjoy the genre (along with Dragonforce), seeing this band in the game would be an awesome (if not superior) substitute. I also think that these guys are closer to being "true musicians", seeing as how they can pull off their songs live with the same (and sometimes better) quality as the studio versions.

That, and you HAVE to respect anyone that can get Saruman from Lord of the Rings to sing backup on one of their songs. :)

I'd kill for Emerald Sword in the game.
Or Ancient Forest of Elves from Turilli's solo stuff.

One of the bands that got me into Epic Europowermetal. I love this stuff.

all of these bands sound like Helloween.

If we want Power Metal in Rock Band give me some Symphony X.

all of these bands sound like Helloween.

They sort of invented the subgenre. Later bands put on bells and whistles - Rhapsody has stuff with full male Choirs and some others do things like Harpsichords and such.

I actually find Helloween somewhat bland, and like the bands that spice up the sound. :)

I agree with you, Mhoram. I have listened to other Power Metal bands and I think I like Rhapsody the best. It would be really cool to see them give us a Euro Power Metal pack with songs from Rhapsody, Camelot, Helloween, Symphony X, or something like that.

Upon whom should I unleash the mighty power of the dragonflame to make this happen?

I agree with you, Mhoram. I have listened to other Power Metal bands and I think I like Rhapsody the best.

Rhapsody is in my top 5. My only problem with then is they do get a bit samey.

Others I really like - Ring Of Fire (or Mark Boals later CDs), some Ayreon (notably Flight of the Navigator and Star One: Space Metal), and some of Eric Norlander's stuff (Music Machine and Into the Sunset).

Absolutley not. I now proclaim this, "the new Dragonforce".

My ears still hurt.

m00p-
Like I said - I can see how people hate the genre. But the "problem" with Dragonforce is that many don't respect their musicianship because they believe it's all studio trickery. I would argue that, with Rhapsody, if you hate the genre, you could at least acknowledge their talent and skill as musicians. I am sorry to have injured your ears so badly. Next time, when someone tells you "this band is a reasonable substitute for Dragonforce", try to remember how badly Power Metal "hurts your ears" and do yourself the favor of backing out of the thread.

Personally, I detest bluegrass music. To me, the sound and feel is like "nails on a chalkboard" (to put it in cliche terms) with very few exceptions. BUT, I still respect the people that play the music because they are kick-ass mandolin or banjo players - even if I hate the sound of it.
