View Full Version : Rockband for the wife... need music for them

If you are a 30 something like me, good chance you are married, maybe have one or two peep squeaks running around, work around 50 to 60 hours, so finding the time to hang out with bunch of guys playing Rock Band BWT mode is not going to happen.
Our only choice is to recruit our wives. Thus far, I have been pretty successuful. She even allowed me to preorder it. (Anybody under 30, your time will come soon enough:p ) Now, the hardest thing is to have a non gamer be interested in playing a game for hours.
One thing that is missing in my plan is more music for the ladies. That's right, we need more music that ladies would like to sing. Sure, she has heard of most bands on the setlist, but only a handful in my opinion really please women.
So, this is a post to hopefully get the game makers provide more songs that appeal to women, like the Bengals. Yes, laught it up, but for every "Walk Like an Egyptian", there is a "Stigmata" for me. Catch my drift?
For all of the 30+, post in here if you would like to see more downloadable songs that will have more appeal to the women in our life..oh wait, I meant woman...
Besides, if we get them to sing for hours, think how much more quite the house will be when you turn the game off. :D

Not thirty...yet...give me a year!
But my wife finally said: "Fine, buy your PS3". Woo-hoo! Now for rockband. She loves Nirvana, but singing it? IDK. She loved all the kareoke games. I'm looking forward to celebrity skin 'cause I know she likes hole so...yeah, more songs like that...

I'm good.

My wife has a guilty pleasure/soft spot for Bon Jovi, so the inclusion of that in Rock Band was what sealed the deal for me and had Full Spousal Blessing when it came time to get the game. Basically if there are any cheesy, 80's ballad style songs (or pretty much more Bon Jovi) I am set. Though the wife also has a deep love of Oasis, so if any of those songs were made available via DLC, that's also a done deal.
Mind you, it helps that the wife is remarkably geeky and loves Silent Hill and Final Fantasy games, so I have far fewer problems justifying these purchases if it means a) surreal horror experiences or b) angst-ridden, amnesiac anime pretty boys pouting on screen.

Any woman who doesn't like Rush is so not worth marrying. Well, maybe.
..Depends on how much she puts out, I guess

My wife will be the "family" singer. There's a handful of songs that she's looking forward to. Bon Jovi, My Sharona, Jet, Say It Ain't So... etc.
But, she can't sing "rock"... so, I've been warned that anything she sings will probably turn into a pop song in the vocals department. I expect great fun when she sings Run to the Hills.

Yes!!!! More for the women:) My wife was complaining about the lack of female vocalists in Rock Band recently. There are lots of good choices. Let's see em!

Good to see I'm not the only one. Too bad that my daughter wasn't a bit older, or I would ahve put her on the drum..then again, we may still put her on the drum but really ahve the AI take care of that. As for my other daughter, she would be great for the bass.. maybe when she turns 1 in six months

I have twin nine year old daughters that play GH. I'm taking the drums (everyone wants them, but they're *mine* (at first)). I have one daughter that has almost finished hard (GH2), so she'll probably take lead.

I agree..!!! My wife is willing to join me in my madness to rock like a super star, but that is also if there are more songs that she would really like to sing or play the drums with. For instance, Guns N Roses Sweet child of mine is one of those songs that we both like a lot. Don't Cry is a little slow, but she loves that song. Then Bon Jovi songs are always welcome. So having slow songs as DLC could work for the ladies.

I fully support this post.
We are a bit longer in the tooth with teenage boys. Even went to the mobile tour and the wife wasn't too pleased with the limited selections, but she still enjoyed being a part of the band.
She is having troubles with the Scene It! controller (I kid you not), she is just not a gamer so there is no way she will be anything but lead singer. Plus she can sing.
Although I'm not too hip on her music tastes, it would go a long way for "band unity" to include more stuff from the likes of (ugh, I can hardly cough it out of my mouth)...Kelly Clarkson, Cher, Cindi Lauper, Madonna, The Bangles, and the likes.

100% Agreed with the OP.
Although I'm not quite 30, the only person I really have in my life is my wife (well, and my son, so people), I would love for there to be downloadable content to appeal to women. Guitar Hero's setlist seems to only appeal to men and metal-head girls (ya know, the ones who actually look like Judy Nails :P ), so I can see my wife singing something that's more her style (a la not rock & roll)... Can't ever see her playing guitar/drums though, she's coordinatedly challenged :P

I am pretty lucky...my wife is a gamer too and takes lead almost all the time on GH2. I was in an 80s era Metal band, playing bass...but I was one of those guys that thought, ‘hey, I could do better than the drummer’. NOW I get to prove it!
But really, having more woman driven songs, either appealing to them or letting them sing would be awesome!

100% agree
I am most certainly one of the oldest guys here. It's funny you mentioned the bangals. I have a video of my wife singing "Eternal Flame" from around the time we met. She loves Nirvana and will love the songs from Hole, Garbage, and Bon Jovi.
She is not turned off by rock completely. From GH she loved playing Take Me Out, Infected, and even Ziggy (which after all this time together surprised me) but I agree we could use a few more "classics" aimed at the 30+ woman.

This is a great post we do need some more songs, my wife loved Ballads, I think they would be pretty cool to have for DLC, so that not everone has to order them. Her fav song is Every Rose has it thorn by Poison, Guns and Roses stuff, her fav song on the disk is going to be BallRoom Bilitz, to bad it is a cover. I hope the guy singing can match the orginal singer that will be hard to do with his voice.

Alright I have to correct the mistype of the "Bengals" as they are the "Bangles", but the suggestion is spot on. My wife I doubt will likely sing-- I'm hoping to get her onto the bass for my band. But the DLCs, add-ons, and sequels need to include some more lady friendly music. Bon Jovi would be perfect (all women are onboard the Jon Bon Jovi train). My wife enjoys the Killers, MCR, those "rock Ballads", U2, the Police and some Floyd. How about some Stray Cats, Bruce Springsteen or, don't flame me, Duran Duran?

This has been my wife's complaint with every single GH game released so far, and while there are some songs she really likes in RB (Bon Jovi, Hole, Garbage, etc), I know that having a larger selection of diverse music will really help us be able to play the game longer together, she gets tired of the GH games WAY too easily (I've had GH2 for almost a year now, and she's just a few weeks ago beat Medium on GH80s. wtf)...
But she LOVES Singstar (Haven't got KR yet), and so for that fact she's excited for RB. We desperately need more female-friendly content.
Not to mention she's totally excited about the possibility of some country DLC lol...
Oh, for the record, since everyone else is saying so, I'm 26. She keeps saying i'm "almost 30" though lol...

and we're all hungry like the wolf! lol, on a serious note, they really could do a "wife-is-my-singer in RB" pack with all of the good ol' songs that they will like. i would like to see some ballads (not cheesy ones though) and some Floyd, Zeppelin, Duran Duran, U2 (with or without you would be fantastic), or anything else that they would love.
p.s.-if they do release "walk like and egyptian" you will see the dance!!!!! nniiiiccceee!

You're breeding your own band. You're my hero.
Also, just throwing in more support for female vocalists in DLC. The girlfriend is absolutely stoked for Rock Band action, so the more songs she can sing the better.

Okay, since I've yet to see anyone else do so, allow me to pop up and be the voice of reason. Let me get the insults out of the way first: your post paints you as a misogynistic fool. Now that that's out of the way...
Whether you were aiming for some sort of humor or not, the above drivel is filled with generalizations that aim to set women back to the days of barefoot, pregnant kitchen cooking. What, you can only hang out a "bunch of guys" to play Rock Band? Wives have to be "recruited" instead of willing participants? Only a handful of the songs please women? (How do you determine that, with a poll?) Women talk too much, so if you can tire out their vocal cords with singing you won't have to listen to them afterwards? Your insinuation that women are only interested in slow-paced, sappy balladeering and that certain genres of songs have to be picked to tailor to them is insulting to the gender at large and I'm sad that no one's stepped forward to say anything about it.
I'm all for more diversity in the game. I'm all for more songs sung by women--because they need more representation. The Bangles (who sing much better than the football team)? Sure--hell, I'll sing their music, and I think Hazy Shade of Winter would be a great addition.
If the music is good, the music is good. I'm sorry to hear that you have to coax your wife into being interested in the game. I've always known I'm lucky in my relationship, but reading these responses, I'm even luckier than I thought because it seems like I have one of the ten women in the world who can appreciate a song because it's good, not because it's some sort of chick song. She'll be right up there singing Highway Star, Won't Get Fooled Again, Mississippi Queen and Sabotage, just as she'd sing Wanted Dead or Alive, Here it Goes Again or Foreplay/Long Time--because they're good songs. That's right--women can sing songs that were made famous by men.
I went to the tour when it hit our area. I saw plenty of females there, and they were just as likely to sing Black Hole Sun as they were Say It Ain't So. If you (or any of the other contributors to this thread) need more songs for your wife or girlfriend, by all means, ask, but I'd rather not have any devs come across this thread and think there's some unanimous need for more slow, tender music to appeal to the gentle ways of all women-folk.

I think you're really reading too much into his post. It's good that your wife likes the same type of rock as you. As mentioned, my wife has a much more stereotypical taste in music. If you noticed the other posts, several people are the same. I don't think anyone is saying that all women are like that.

30 Years old. Agree 100% with original poster with one difference. It’s not just for her that I would like to have those type of songs included. I would very much like to play them as well.
Note to Ultrace: The reason your wife likes that type of music is because she has a manly music taste. (Just kidding!) Now can we have some Cranberries please?
Note to devs: Please include every Guns’n Roses album. If you do I will buy every single one and love you for the rest of my life.

Add my vote to the pile!
Nothing too pop or girly, I don't want to be stuck playing drums on Sheryl Crow songs all night.
Potential Bands:
Bon Jovi (more)
Four Non-blondes
Breeder
Heart
Evanescence
I do love it when the wife sings Metallica though. :)

Umm...OK
What, you can only hang out a "bunch of guys" to play Rock Band? Wives have to be "recruited" instead of willing participants?
I can't speak for the population at large but have you read much of this forum?
Fact is- Yes, most of the guys on here DO have plans to play with a "bunch of guys"
Most wives are NOT willing participants. Although the percentage of women playing games has steadily increased over the past decade, fact is if you take out places like Pogo.com and a handful of games like the Sims and the vast majority of gamers are male.
Only a handful of the songs please women? (How do you determine that, with a poll?)
Again, can't speak for everyone but I'd agree with that. I'd also back up with my personal experience that yeah..most women I know would rather sing songs not found on RB's set list. I have been a Karaoke DJ for over 15 years in two different cities. I can tell you that out of the top 20+ songs women sing the most, none are found in this game.
Women talk too much, so if you can tire out their vocal cords with singing you won't have to listen to them afterwards?
I'm very happy with my wife. I have no complaints here myself
Your insinuation that women are only interested in slow-paced, sappy balladeering and that certain genres of songs have to be picked to tailor to them is insulting to the gender at large and I'm sad that no one's stepped forward to say anything about it.
Slow, sappy balladeering? I'll give you that. Based on my personal experience I'd say fun, upbeat songs, most of which are originally sung by women are most popular. Women sing very little metal, and little of classic rock in general so yeah it's fair to say certain genres appeal more to women then others. Of course there are always exceptions.
I'm all for more diversity in the game. I'm all for more songs sung by women--because they need more representation. The Bangles (who sing much better than the football team)? Sure--hell, I'll sing their music, and I think Hazy Shade of Winter would be a great addition.
I agree here. And with what I do, I have or would sing anything myself.
If the music is good, the music is good. I'm sorry to hear that you have to coax your wife into being interested in the game. My wife will be right there too. But many are not so lucky.
That's right--women can sing songs that were made famous by men.
100% correct. But most don't.

There are a TON of women that will play and very much enjoy this game. There will be 4 at my house on the 20th. I'm sure the devs have done plenty of research and really don't have to read this forum to figure anything out. Ask the guys begging for more metal and you'll see how unanimous this isn't.

Well, I guess since this was directed to me, I'll respond. :D
It is a given that you are reading too much into my post. Then again, you may not find people like Chris Rock or Jeff Foxworthy funny which would have explained how you failed to see my post as humor or at least an attempt for humor.
If my post didn't agree with you like a bad case of Montezuma's revenge, then ask the question first, then make the judgment later. Instead, you made the judgment first, then asked a question that you answered yourself.
If you would have asked first, you would discover that my wife and I run a business together, and she is the CEO, thus my boss. This decision was made together..so, very different picture then the "aim to set women back to the days of barefoot, pregnant kitchen cooking" perception.
Loosen up a bit, and if you read between the lines, no pun intended, you see a man, who would love to spend time playing Rock Band with his wife, but would like to see more songs that he knows will appeal to her desires.
It seems that 20 people or so got the gist of things behind some sarcastic humor.
p.s. Some food for thought, my response was a bit more diplomatic then my wife's

Some of these stereotypes are a bit sad, men are interested in metal vs women are interested in pop/ballads? I know a lot of guys that can't stand metal or hard rock and prefer classic rock 'n' roll or pop (and I don't mean the crappy pop of this century) so it goes both ways. I have a lot of friends that love music games (both men and women) but probably won't buy Rock Band because of the set list.
And that I think is the biggest downfall of the game. If the setlist had a little more variety then the game would attract a much wider audience. I think the instant appeal of GH/RB (and similar) to casual gamers is playing with funky peripherals. If there's songs they know then that's a cool bonus at first, but in the end liking the music will be what makes you buy the game you demo'ed or played at a friends house.
I like a variety of music styles, but I'd say 50's-90's rock'n'roll, pop & rock is the best description. So it's kinda sad there are only 2 songs I really like on RB (probably more I don't mind, the rest I don't like or know). And that's going to hold me back from buying it because I don't want to have to rely on DLC and paying more to play a game that sounds cool with stuff I like in it. It's a horrible feeling to be excited about a game and yet know you aren't really going to enjoy it that much anyway because of the music.
Why Singstar does so well? It's all about the music, you have a large choice, additional discs are cheap as (probably applies to K-Revolution too but we don't get that in Oz).
I gather most of you don't know much about THE BANGLES given two people can't even spell their band name... But they are a girl ROCK group that has produced more than the popish mainstream likes of Eternal Flame, Manic Monday and Walk Like An Egyptian (not that there is anything wrong with those, I love the former two). I actually saw them play in Sydney when they reformed for a tour a couple of years ago and they really rocked!
I wonder how many women are on these forums anyway...
Unfortunately I've lost pretty much all hope HMX will include more music I actually like (hey I know you can't please everyone.. I live for music games), so I think I'll stick to Drummania and my choice variety of rock, pop, ska, disco, techno, classical, surf rock and more than two western songs I actually like (and probably a lot of genres I can't even name - yeah it has some awesome j-rock/pop too).
Sorry for the long post...but I think there are a lot of people out there who would love to play the game but feel excluded due to differing music/song interests (and yeah I'm sure this includes a lot of wives :p or even parents who would otherwise be interested)

I want to add one more thing to my previous post.
Stereotyping really isn't happening in this thread. Most people are posting about their own wife's musical taste and not talking about femaledom as a whole.

Get off your high horse Ultrace.
I'm in the same boat as the original poster. So yes, my wife will have to be recruited and the more songs she like in the game the better.
One more thing, what is with using such big words (misogynistic). I vote that on this forum we limit the words to a fifth grade level or less. Using big words is discriminating to people that are vocabulary-challenged like myself.

In an attempt to get this thread back on track slightly.
My better half is a keen singer but hasn't shown much interest in rock band yet.
My latest cunning plan is to put all the tracks onto a couple of cd's and make sure she listens to them as much as possible so when the the game does come out she might recognise the songs and want to have a go :D

^ Agreed.
I am guessing Ultra is "that one guy" who shows up at women rights protests.

Now now, he wasn't that bad. He just over reacted a touch. He actually made a decent point. For my girlfriend, for example. What would make her flip out more than anything is if Bruce Springsteen was added as DLC. However, specific taste isn't the point of this thread. There's a whole list of artists I would love to see, but that's not the point either.
Fact is we're talking averages. Every woman has music she loves that has a male vocalist, and most woman will give good songs with male vocals a try. But the average woman is going to be more comfortable singing a song with a female vocalist. It just is what it is.
I'm a guy. I love Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and I will absolutely give it a whirl. But I'm going to be a hell of a lot more comfortable singing something with a male vocalist because it's in my range. That's not sexist to suggest that a woman will struggle a bit with some of the male vocals going on. Sure you can mess with octaves, but if you've ever tried out Karaoke Revolution, it can get tricky.
So suggesting that devs keep this in mind for DLC certainly shouldn't be a crime or offensive to anyone. No one is suggesting Britanny Spears here. But RB does seem light on female vocalists, that's all.

Loosen up a bit, and if you read between the lines, no pun intended, you see a man, who would love to spend time playing Rock Band with his wife, but would like to see more songs that he knows will appeal to her desires.
Agreed 100%!!!
It’s funny...sad..."misogynistic"??? Where was the hate or mistrust in the OP? You either used websters.com's thesaurus or you are in grave need of help...if that word is in your common daily parlance...what the heck are you doing here...get back to teaching your English class!
Anyway, the only thing I think is more funny than your word choice...is the fact that you come out RAILING on the OP for a perceived anti-feminist PoV...and how many woman really would want you as their "White-Knight"...i mean, big words...big lance...whatever.
People need to learn to relax a little...the world is in real trouble and its EVERYONE’s attitude that’s the problem. The fact that anyone thinks their point of view or opinion has any more weight than another...is laughable.

But come on, his preaching was pretty funny.
Like I said before, I feel lucky. My wife loves classic rock; she loves Radiohead, Tool, Bloc Party etc. Sh!t, she loves Metallica and that real isn’t my thing.
I feel lucky because this really isn’t the norm. Women typically do like different music than men. Why? Because they ARE different!
The part I think is funny is when people think equality means men and women are the same. We are NOT! Thank God we’re not.

For the record, I have no problem with anyone who popped up to talk about their own wives/girlfriends/etc. -- you know that person, you know how it is. But the original post made a lot of statements about women in general, especially when those statements contradict a lot of women that I know and that I actually witnessed playing the game. I directly quoted bits from the OP that I found to be generalizing. No, I don't go to protests or anything like that. And I don't use "misogynistic" in everyday conversation, but there's nothing wrong with knowing what a word means and using it for such...

Maybe it sounds "generalizing" because so many people here find it to be the truth, being the "general" situation. And when many of us here have already made this statement in a handful of random threads throughout the forums, and those of us who are married are all saying pretty much the same thing, yeah, I'd say that the "generalization" is pretty accurate for a lot of us.
If that even makes any sense at all, my mind is scattered in about four billion different directions at the moment.

Ultrace, I must give you credit. Your personal views and experiences are of course going to be unique to you. Op gave his, you gave yours...others gave theirs. I must admit I have been waiting for your response in this thread as many had something to say about your view or more how it was you said it. I was expecting this to flare up to the point of lock down. It did not. Your response here was well said and surprisingly added no fuel to the fire.
For what it is worth.

Oh! Oh! Can post a list from the lady friends playing with me? I'm not married or dating at the moment but I'll post the list anyway.
Avenged Sevenfold
Megadeth
Flyleaf
More Deep Purple
More Nirvana
Sex Pistols
Switchfoot
More Rolling Stones
Beatles
Jefferson Airplane
AC/DC
That's all the request I remember. Take out Nirvana and Switchfoot and I'm quite proud of the strange company I keep.

More of Pat Benatards...
There is so much politcally incorrect fun to be had here, just a bit too easy so I'll leave it.
Good band name though, The Pat Benatards. ;) :D

Ditto, my wife was bummed about the lack of pop in GH80s, and would be stoked with RB 80's pop.
