View Full Version : Modern Metal pack, please \m/

Guitar Hero games featured some more modern heavy metal, but I was kinda disapointed in Rock Band's set list in term of metal. My guess is that they took them off the main game to spare the singer, but by making it downloadable, only those who care about will pay for it.
There's a song from Iron Maiden and Metallica, that's nice, but the game starves for songs that are not 20 years old.
GH3 had a song from In Flames. That was great. I suggest the pack gets an In Flames song, they're pretty easy to sing. Only For The Weak is well known.
How about some classics from Children Of Bodom, such as Mask Of Sanity or Deadnight Warrior.
Another good pick would be Amon Amarth. Thousand Years Of Oppression would be a nice pick, but Ride For Vengeance and Versus The World would be awesome too even if they are more rough.
Finally, my last suggestion would be Arch Enemy with Ravenous, We Will Rise or Dead Eyes See No Future.
Please, bring some modern metal in such an awesome game!
Thanks! \m/

Children of Bodom - Needled 24/7
As I Lay Dying - I Never Wanted
In Flames - Come Clarity
Great metal pack, not all loud and heavy either :)

Needled 24/7 is one of my favorites, I didn't include it because I was considering it a little too harsh, but I personally love very heavy metal. Other songs that I could have listed would have wasted the drums, and I don't want that! :P

lol if I wanted modern metal, I'd stay away from metalcore completely if I were them
Mastodon
Meshuggah
Tool
Dillinger Escape Plan
Coheed (...coheed are alot more metal to the roots than most bands are at the moment haha)
It'll be lovely to have Amon Amarth of course though.

yeah, they definitely should have some like that. european metal like in flames, opeth, norther, CoB, etc. and some good american metal like the human abstract, august burns red(more mathcore than metal, but w/e), and darkest hour

Mastodon!
Colony Of Birchmen would probably be the best bet because it's their most recognizeable song and the singing isn't screaming.

Not a new band, at least for me. Behemoth. Now that's intensity! Rock Band desperatly need some real metal. It has all those hardcore metal outfits, but to play what? Metallica? Metallica is fine, but really, it doesn't match the metal outfits available in the game. We need songs where the drummer will lose 10 pounds if he plays on extreme. :P Just hear the drummer in that clip, he's the best drummer I've heard. Live, he's even better. He gets the crowd cheering only with his sound test.
(That's not their best song, but the best one I could find quick on YouTube. If you're interested for more, check out Demigod or Slaying The Prophets Of Isa.)
Also, note the windmill move at the very start of the song. That's some real heavy metal moves! Harmonix, you can't have metal move sets without headband and windmills, and that's for the drummer as well!

Holy ...
there's new Agalloch?! *runs to check that out*
Big thumbs or horns up for DLC of anything by Opeth, Amon Amarth,
and to add two incredible modern metal bands I didn't see here, Isis and Orphaned Land (check out Panopticon or Mabool, respectively) :P
I think the main reason there'd be problems for this kind of stuff is the software might not be able to process the so-called "cookie monster" vocals, by phonemes or pitch. :|

well the thread title is MODERN metal not heavy metal so i threw in the death metal. i could care less if the mic cant register cookie monster growls, the vocalist can do spoken word like in sabotage.

Yeah you could do the spoken word form, although I don't know how many people enjoy that. I do enjoy most of the instrumental aspects of Death Metal, just not the singer. To each his own I suppose.

While I agree that some bands wouldn't do well in Rock Band because they sound like "waaah waaah waaaaaaaaah wooooor", all the bands mentionned in my first post are far from that. The vocals are just intense, but not from the depths of hell. Behemoth is more harsh, but I can understand the lyrics of the latest album just fine. Yeah, that music isn't for everyone, but if they want to add some death metal outfits, they must add some death metal. And only those who want it will pay for it. But the reason I didn't include Behemoth in my first post was not due to the vocals, but more the drums. Inferno is freaking amazing, and playing some Behemoth on the RB drumset would probably void the warranty. :P
And please, let's not get in a debate "That's death" "no that's black"... They're all ****ing heavy metal. The hundreds of sub-genres are just superfluous.

Genres are important because there are a ton of misleading genres. For example, here are the ones that matter:
Under Heavy Metal:
Main:
Power Metal
Thrash Metal
Doom Metal
Death Metal ("cookie monster")
Black Metal
Fusions/Side:
Sludge Metal
Stoner Metal
Progressive Metal
Deathgrind
Under Hardcore Punk:
Grindcore
Metalcore
Deathcore (Job for a Cowboy is an example)
Rapcore
Misc. Fusions that are more under other genres:
Alternative Metal (essentially the same as the next two) (Fusion of Alternative Rock and Heavy Metal tendencies, more Rock than Metal)
Rap Metal (Fusion of Rapcore and Alternative Metal; usually takes the more alt. tendencies)
Numetal (Fusion of Rap Metal or pure Alternative Metal with Groove Metal influence stripped of Groove's Thrash leanings) (Rap fusion: Ill Nino, KoRn) (Alt. fusion: Slipknot, System of a Down)
It's not as simple as "it's all metal" because even though metal is in the title, it's not really always metal. I could call Fall Out Boy pop metal, does that make it really true? What if I'm a critic with Rolling Stone? Yeah, that's how metalcore and numetal were founded improperly.
I've said it once and I'll say it over and over: I want death metal. You don't like it, don't buy the pack. I will say this though: I sung Enter Sandman with death grunts on expert and won it with the meter being at the top, then tried it with normal vocals and failed at 14%.
Children of Bodom - Needled 24/7
As I Lay Dying - I Never Wanted
In Flames - Come Clarity
Great metal pack, not all loud and heavy either :)
I would buy that pack like the second it came out man
I love those 3 songs
COB & AILD FTW
In flames is good enough :P I like about half of their most recent CD

Mastodon would be amazing, as would Children of bodom. Behemoth and Amon Amarth would be good, but the drums are insane! The drums are so fast i couldn't even keep up with, and they're pretty technical too, so i'm not sure if it's really possible.
I'd like some GWAR, Therion, Kreator, Ensiferum, etc.

Drums in Behemoth are totally insane, but Amon Amarth isn't too bad. Of course, it wouldn't be easy, but still possible. Songs like Ride For Vengeance, Versus The World and Thousand Years Of Oppression wouldn't be so hard to play or sing and are very good songs.

Wait... people actually listen to pre-symphonic Therion?
I really can't see anything they've done after '96 or so actually being Rock Band friendly, with all the chanting and stuff. I'm sure there's a few tracks that'd be fun on guitar/drums, but there's no way I'd even want to attempt some of the singing.

To me, they're just different bands with their own way of playing the same genre : Heavy Metal.
I swear, I hear new genre getting created every years, there's so many genres that for most bands, we can't even say what genre they are. On a big site, it says something, and it says something else on another credible site. Some bands fits in multiple genres and either end up creating a new genre or be classed in a different genre on any site. Funniest one I've seen was Behemoth being classed as Pop-Metal.
Music is suffering the same ridiculous fate as chocolate bars and chips, with a ridiculously large number of flavors for the same things. There's like 7 different flavors of kit-kat (not even talking of the different sizes). For chips, there's new flavors being created every months, but most of them turns out tasting **** or the same as another one, so they all die.
I'll keep saying that I listen to Heavy Metal. There's some bands that I like, and some that I don't. It's perfectly fair, because they are different and I have my own tastes. Damn, if it keeps going like it is going now, every bands will be alone in their own category, lol.

There's a difference between criticizing a song and criticizing an entire genre and/or era. There's also a difference between an opinion and an unfounded statement.
Saying that you don't like something is an opinion. Saying that something sucks is not an opinion. It's a statement.

But this board is for band requests, no opinions on a band. And while a request for not wanting something (that you are not even forced to buy) is a request, it's an odd one.
Beside, your post wasn't really an opinion. You could have said "I wouldn't buy it because the drum parts would be too hard or I know no one who can sing that", that's an opinion.
It's not like removing the fan cap, where it changes something to both parties. If you don't like a pack, you don't download it. Really, I doubt no one will like ALL the packs that will be released.

Why do you say 'modern' metal? Because it's in the title? Modern metal is not a genre. There's young bad that sound just like some bands were sounding 30 years ago.
I added modern in the title because I believe that there's other things in metal that Metallica or Iron Maiden.
But you can hate 'metal' in general, or more specific genres, like nu metal (no one likes that! :P), but specifying that you don't like 'modern metal' is odd, because there's modern band that have the old feeling better than those old bands do today.

Arg, is that what they call METAL?
I would prefer if Harmonix wouldn't give a metal pack than giving such an emo sh*t pack. Because without one, I'll keep hoping for one, but if one comes with sh*t, I'll know that it will take years for another one to come, and that it will probably contain more sh*t.

Isnt the title to GH3 Legends of Rock .. LOL
Well, it always had some metal. Beside, ROCK Band also have a good deal of punk.
Actually, I'd love Only for the Weak by In Flames. Probably my favorite song by them.
It's also one of the easiest to sing, and it's not too heavy. It would be an excellent choice for RB.
Bleedin' heck, anything from In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Children of Bodom, Gamma Ray, Dimmu Borgir, etc. would make me so happy. I was initially pissed that GH3 was getting a "modern metal pack" until I actually looked at the tracks. Pathetic. The last tracks I bought for GH3 I played once, and haven't trouched the game since. I'm selling that crap to GameStop today. What's the point? I can't even use their guitar for RB.
I've never bought any song for GH3, they're overpriced. I do enjoy Devil Went Down to Georgia, but that was a free download. :P

Because you have the X360 version... Activision blocked the compatibility on PS3 and thus we're stuck with 3 people bands until freaking april. What sucks the most is that many people bought GH3 BECAUSE they were told that the guitar would work. (I'm part of that) But that's a discussion for another topic. :P

The Modern Metal Pack is great. I am enjoying playing the songs and don't regret the purchase at all. I don't care if it's not as "metal" as some people would like. I just care that I like the songs. Just call it (Arguably) Modern Metal Track Pack if you have a problem with it like Harmonix did with the Punk pack. :p
It certainly blows away that hideous No Doubt DLC offering... for my tastes anyway.

Thrash metal pack is obviously a step in the right direction, though I suspect a lot of peopel will be turned off by the vocals.
I'd love to see a power metal track. Blind Guardian, Sonata Arctica, Nightwish, etc...
Seems like it might be more easily accessible to the average player.

Give us the great metal band like Slayer, Pantera, Fear Factory, OLD Metallica nothing on the Black Albulm or newer!!! Some suicidal Tendencies would be great. And how about Biohazard.

Symphony X would probably be the best choice for The Modern Metal pack. ridiculous drums, Great solos, bass is wonderful, and the vocals are a singers paradise. The music they write is EPIC.

lol if I wanted modern metal, I'd stay away from metalcore completely if I were them
Mastodon
Meshuggah
Tool
Dillinger Escape Plan
Coheed (...coheed are alot more metal to the roots than most bands are at the moment haha)
It'll be lovely to have Amon Amarth of course though.
Wait a minute.
You said "stay away from metalcore" and then listed Dillinger Escape Plan?

Would love some more modern metal.
Killswitch engage, Bullet for my valentine and the like.
Just hope my bass pedal holds out with the abuse it'd take from some songs with loads of fast bass hits.
