I'm getting ready to upgrade my PS3 from a 40gb to a 320gb. Whats the best deal? Which 2.5 HD do I buy? Has anyone here upgraded? Man, I'm really confused about what to get. So any help would be really appreciated.:D

I wish I could help you, but unfortunately, I know nothing about hard drives. I'm actually having trouble with my computer hard drive.
Ok, good luck! Sorry I was of no help.

I'm still jealous of PS3 users who can upgrade their drives so affordably. The last time I bought a 320 GB laptop drive, it was $140, which is like $40 cheaper than the 120 GB drive for the Xbox. :(

I dunno about buying hdd's for use in ps3.. but this guide has a comment section where people are talking about stuff you might be interested in..

http://asia.cnet.com/digitalliving/tips/0,3800004921,62032875,00.htm

"We recommend staying with the same RPM as the PS3’s original HDD, 5400RPM. You can upgrade to 7200RPM, of course, but we cannot promise that it will not have ill-effects on your machine."

As for price... just shop around. You're more than likely to find better deals online, I think. Newegg.com, Amazon.com to name a couple of places to start price comparisons...

I originally bought the 60gb, and have not yet upgraded. I would imagine the prices wouldn't vary drastically depending on what you get.

here's a link on how to replace your hard drive: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3media&thread.id=32840

here's a link for some that are compatible: http://www.newegg.com/product/ProductList.aspx?Order=PRICE&Page=1&Category=15&Nty=1&N=2010150380+1035907918&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=380

I bought the Western Digital Scorpio 320 GB and it works great for me so far, and it is fairly cheap on newegg.com

2.5" SATA
Also get a USB flash drive to back up your saves or if you've already got it an external hard drive.

Basically any 2.5" SATA will work. I'd suggest NewEgg.com, which tends to have some of the best deals.
Like mentioned, make sure to back up your files first!

I'm nowhere near full on my PS3 (60gb), what kinda stuff do you have on there, sheesh!

I would stick to Western Digital, Seagate, or Maxtor drives personally. I have never had good luck with off brand hard drives, so buyer beware on those. Newegg is awesome, I would start there, they always have the best prices.

I agree here. Granted, it's like, the only thing the PS3 really has over the 360, but it's a hell of a doozy.

I want to be able to use a standard 2.5 HDD Microsoft. I want at least 250 GB of storage.

I bought a drive way back (when I first asked you about this, Rock_Starman) but just recently tried to replace it because the 40GB was getting full. (It's not as hard to run out of room as you might think...)

My question is, did either of you have any issues with getting the screws out???

I barely managed to get the blue screw out but cannot remove any of the four screws in the tray. I'm worried about stripping the screws the way I did when I rendered one of my guitars useless while removing the back cover while trying to install a strum fix. I did a web search after encountering the issue and it seems pretty common but I don't think I can do anything involving a drill. I've already tried "Liquid Wrench" and all sorts of sizes of screwdrivers to no avail and am waiting for 'needlenose pliers' in the mail but I'm not getting my hopes up too much. Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Note: If one restores their data from the previous drive via an external source they may run into a problem with 'Data is Corrupt' when they try to load a saved game. If this happens, turn off the switch on the back of the console and then back on. Maybe only I run into these problems, but I really wish someone had told me about that sooner. :(

yeah, the screws were quite difficult to get out. I ended up bending the metal tray just to get them out. The tray was flimsy enough to put back in place once i finally got the screws out. I used some WD-40 and they loosened them up eventually.

I hear that heat works as well.

Issues would be an understatement. I had to take it the hardware department to get them out.

I didn't have any data corrupt problems. I used a USB flash drive and backed up my saves and some of the vids and it all went just fine. Maybe it's just one of the saves you can't take over?

I might have to look into getting an HDD upgrade soon. I have a 60GB PS3, but with all the games I've purchased, DLC from RB and now Singstar DLC, I'm running out of space fast. I'm down to 25GB.

Well, piracy/sharing I guess, but having used both, and with the developers doing things better on the XBox, and not getting kicked from the online service constantly, yeah, I'd have to say the standardized hard drive is the only advantageous thing the PS3 has over the XBox.

I don't think it's naive at all.

Don't get me wrong, it's a solid system, but so far it's got nothing that the XBox doesn't do better, and for $400-$600, it absolutely should.

Oh, and I always forget Blu-Ray, but I <3 my Samsung. The PS3 as a Blu-Ray player isn't a concern for me personally. But it is a way to get a decent BD player if you don't already own a console, although it's much safer to play BD on a dedicated player, since games access the disc differently and doing both can stress the servos.

@Jim:

I really don't think you're trying to start anything here, but in truth you probably just didn't value the features the PS3 had over the Xbox. There's teh standard HDD, of course, and Blu-ray, which is big, but it also has full support for AVI playing and controller reassigning, which are two features I'd love to have. The full support for AVI especially - load as many DVD rips on your hard drive as you want, you'll never fill it up, and you can bring your movie collection wherever you have a tv.

And some of those arcade games are so cool... the crap on the XBL arcade is getting unbearable. I wish they'd just release Goldeneye like they had planned before the new Rare blocked it...

For the record, I'm a 360 owner trying to pick up a PS3, for the four reasons mentioned above.

@GJJim

You're undervaluing the Blu-rays value for gaming as well as movies. Games like MGS4 simply don't fit on DVDs.
Also, as just mentioned, full AVI support is awesome. Additionally the online service (while not at XBL standards yet, it is improving) is FREE.
The PS3 can also support up to 7 controllers, rather than 4, which is great for party games (such as Pixel Junk: Racers).
Also, there's the whole RRoD thing...

and i love NOT paying for wallpapers, themes, and playing online with friends, but thats probably just me personally.

my 360 is nice and all but if i had to sell one, even though i would get more profit from the PS3, my Xbox would be gone in a second.

Again something that never occured to me, most of my movies are on Blu Ray or HD-DVD or DVD and it's just easier to pop them in rather than try to rip them, especially on my 5 year old computer.

The XBLA is intense, especially recently, Braid, Bionic Commando, Castle Crashers, etc. I didn't see many games on PSN that warranted attention that weren't already on the XBLArcade.

Not entirely true, MGS4 would easily fit on a DVD9 if it used video and audio compression. There is True Lossless compression that is used on many XBL games (Like Gears of War) that look as good or better than MGS4.
Yes, the online service is free, but it's far from stable, and even free has less than half the users. It's not standardized either, meaning games don't have to have the functionality at all, and that's a big negative in my opinion.
That's great! We just had an 8 player game of SceneItLCA here where everyone had their own controller. The XBox is not limited in this regard, it's up to a developer to make a workaround. As far as direct functionality from the console, it accepts 4 controllers, just like the XBox. There are 4 little red lights on the controller, corresponding to a default position. Games can circumvent this on both consoles if there is a need.

You don't always have to pay for them, and you can put whatever wallpaper you want up for free. I currently have a Hellsing logo. Some themes and gamerpics are free from time to time as well, and these are full on with 5 different images, button and guide graphics and so on, rather than simple wallpapers and pallete swaps. In any case, I do enjoy paying to play online, because it keeps the undesirables easier to deal with. With the reputation and reporting system, the Gamertag and the credit card linked to it are banned from Live, what's to stop a griefer on PSN when they can just make a new account with a new free email address?I'm a firm believer in "You get what you pay for"

I really wasn't trying to go into this, the naive remark was just somewhat comical to me. And as I stated before, For ME, the PS3's only advantageous feature is the standardized HDs.

I also neglected to mention the Media Center extender, for the movies, pics, music and the WMC apps.

But yes, we've digressed into a fairly literate console war, a skirmish if you will, posturing, but both sides knowing the other is a decent machine.

Topic it is then;

Since the OP has the PS3 and the luxury of picking and choosing, I would say Seagate or Fujitsu. Western Digital and Maxtor I'd stay away from at all costs, they have 35% and 40% fail rates, respectively.

i didn't know that about Western Digital. That is the i have. I must have gotten one of the 65%. The good thing about buying from Newegg.com is that will replace it if its defective.

I used the backup utility to move everything to an external drive and then 'restored' it to the new drive. Apparently, if you don't do the switch off/on thing afterwards, even trying to load a saved game could end up in corrupt data.

I thought backup/restore would allow me to use everything I had already downloaded, since it's on the same machine and account. But it says that Rock Band DLC is no longer available. Is there an easier way to get everything back other than downloading every song all over again (individually)? And does anyone know if this is the case for most games?

Thanks!

I bought one yesterday, backed up my stuff on my ipod, changed out hard drives, restored everything. This took me a total of 1 hour to do, extremely easy to do. I now don't have to worry about running out of room for all the songs!
