We already knew that Wii has no surround sound. But apparently that was still to modern for Activision as Wii players have discovered that Guitar Hero 3 is actually in mono.
Yeah you read that right, apparently it's not in advertised Dolby ProLogic II, it's not even in stereo, it's in mono.
At least that's the allegation of many angry Nintendophiles in forums like this one (http://www.gpforums.co.nz/thread/290985/?s=30e1fdf6e3efdc6#post4593701) and this one (http://www.guitarhero.com/forums/8/forum_topics/1258?page=1). And while there's no official statement from Activision yet, the evidence is piling up with sound engineers around the world making fancy sound comparison charts.
People experimented with stereo as early as the 1880's, but the first large commercial trial of a stereo system was the Disney movie Fantasia. Stereo recordings really took off in the 1970's when people upgraded to "hi-fi" systems. Years later, Lucas' THX sound systems pushed the envelope in theaters. In the 90's things got digital, and surround sound home theaters began to crop up everywhere, even my living room.
But do people want to go back to just one channel? Nope, apparently they're really pissed off.
Who can blame them? In a game that's all about the music, mono sound is more than just a small oversight.
Because of this GR plans to to make a few changes...
Full disclosure department: Hardly any reviews noticed the Wii's lack of stereo sound, including GR. Our bad. While we all rocked GH3 on the 360 here in the office, reviewer Nick only played the Wii version on his little TV at home, using only the TV speaker. Our review will be amended as soon as Activision releases an official statement.
