View Full Version : So how, pray tell, do vocals and drums work?

The premise behind Guitar Hero was the special Gibsons which cut down on accuracy to give people with screwed up fingers a chance. How will this work with Drums and Vocals. Drums is way heavier in speed, with accuracy being diminished due to a larger surface area. Also, drums would either have to be hung off the players stomach, like military drummers, or large and laid on the ground, which is gonna make distribution, sales, and storage between playing a *****.
Vocals is a purely internal style, and as thus cannot be "Air" - played. Also, If a person could do an accurate Axel Rose, Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson voice, they'd be touring with an actual band instead of a rock star fantasy. Finally, what about Rapcore bands like RATM, or Death Metal bands like Slayer? A player just shouts the lyrics?
This has been bugging me for a while

The drums are currently proposed to come with a stand, and also with the ability to place on a table if one wishes. If you can't play fast enough on drums, I imagine that the solution is one plays on easy or medium...
I think the original premise was less of making a game for people with screwed up fingers and more making it simple for people with no experience to pick up and "play" a guitar. In that sense, hitting drums is a much less daunting idea for newcomers.
For vocals, it's said that HMX has developed a way for the karaoke part to pickup on phenomes said as well, so that'll no doubt add to the scoring of rapcore and death metal -- although even the most shouty stuff has to have a tone to follow one way or another it could be said

well in reply to the question about teh "shouty" stuff then i can tell you that most speed or thrash or death or doom or any sort of "shouty" metal does indeed have melody and different pitches in the vox. its not just all yelling in a monotone voice into a mic.
but yeah, with the phenome pickups then even the most COOKIE MONSTER ov vox can be used in this game (i beleive).
think of it this way, vox is an intstrement just like a guitar or drum kit.
you have different scales, and pitches that you can play in (high medium and low)
while what most people (people who have never even heard a slayer or dimmu song) consider "singing" is in the mid to high range.
where as CM vox is in the lower range.
and most "shouty" vox still take a formed technique, (seriously, go try and sing an entire chimaira song, and NOT sound like a chain smoker who just swallowed a chainsaw afterwards haha) so even "shouty" songs has some credence in RB....
also even with all this said, the game only picks up on timing, saying the correct lyrics, and pitch, so yeah, as long as you say the right stuff at the right time in the right range then you can sound like Efrum the ******ed rabbit, and still play on expert, lol.
(btw slayer is thrash not death metal FYI)
haha im such a hippocrite

I am aware of this. However, in stark contrast to Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, and Mettllica (the other big thrash bands of the 1980's) all have very good singers in the mid to high range. Slayer was a stark contrast to this, with vocals simply spat out. ("Ausch-Witz! The Meaning Of Pain!") Also, bands with cookie Monster vocals never seem to change. the whole thing seems to be on the same note. While i am aware that they are using a different singing style, like a Base, a Tenor voice would be preferrable, as thats what I have, and is considered to be the best male vocal range in terms of sound quality.
In summation, high vocals are better to listen to and perform than low vocals

Rock Band will judge to see if you hit the pitch, rhythym, and phenomes of the song. If you honestly think that only a few vocalists in the world can do that for Welcome to the Jungle, I don't know what to say.
Also, if Karaoke Revolution is any indication, you don't have to hit the same octaves, just the right notes.

Wow, that may be one of the worst generalizations I have ever heard. Which vocals are "better" and which vocal range is "considered to be the best" are completely subjective.
