View Full Version : The forums gradual decent from opinionated to rude...

Preface: I did a search and didn't see anything like this in the first five pages. Sorry If there is a duplicate.
It is common practice on these forums to be opinionated, heated, and sometimes irrational. That is not exclusive to rockband.com, it is rampant among all forums. The one thing that set this forum apart was the lack of (or minimization of) personal attacks.
Even if an argument became opinionated, you wouldn't expect someone to attack your race, gender, sexual orientation, or mortality. This however has changed in the recent weeks and I wonder if it has anything to do with new members or if people are just fed up being civil.
All I ask is for a return to civility, or at least a few steps in that direction.

Did someone harass you Anthony? You have to understand the situation though. People snap very easily because of the technical problems with Rush.

Holly crap! sillystou, you have an avatar from one of my favorite bands! But right now I can't remember if its from Jack Off Jill or the second band Scarling.
Anyway, forums are always full of buttholes and trolls, that is just the way of the 'net. The more people here the worse it will get.

It's easy to be a tough guy on teh internets. People wouldn't talk like they do on forums as they do IRL.
I try to do that though. I've started and canceled many posts because it was just insulting someone's taste in music, political/religious beliefs, etc.
I can't stand senseless insult threads, so I do my best to keep posts civil.
Now you try, all you a$$holes roaming the Rock Band forums!

I would understand if it was simply in the last couple of days, but I have been observing this ongoing problem for several weeks (maybe even a couple of months).

Yeah, it's Jack Off Jill. They're awesome. :D I prefer JOJ to Scarling though. :)

One can either ignore cruelty or address it. I don't want our community to become the rest of the internet. I can tolerate arguments against my taste in music wiithout feeling insulted. But recently I have noticed people telling others that they should kill themselves. I have observed members complaining about their peers on rockband.com insulting them because of their race. These are commonplace on the rest of the internet. I have been on boards such as 4chan and the scorehero.com forums, I expect this from them. I just thought that this forum was different.

Not to mention people from those two sites mentioned also come here (I go to 4chan, as do a lot of other people here. We also have a ****ton of people from Scorehero.)

Where did you get that stat? This is just another repeat post of somebody crying Rodney Kings anthem. Who cares if people are mean. Sticks and stones. If you or the OP skin is to thin, then quit coming here.

4chan and SA are communities for the socially inept. They are down trodden with young boys/men who make an art of trolling.
I respect the OPs post but call a troll for what they are, ignore it.
Unless the mods take a heavy handed approach, which I am sure they're not based on the fact that most of them (Apples) is usually to busy wh*ring the forums. :p
Try not to take it personally is my advice.

You're actually pretty incorrect.
Even on 4chan trolls are frowned upon, unless you go to /v/, /b/, or /a/.

The 'bullies' of the forums are bullied in 'the real world'.
They're the ones you picked on and laughed at in elementary school because they ate their boogers.
Now that they can plan out their words and attacks carefully, and without fear of actual counter-attacks of any kind, they can wreak havoc on the forums, disrupting the peace and posting links to disturbing images.
Remember that kid in elementary school who you didn't pick for your soccer (football) team because he always scores on his own net? He's the same guy who quit after missing a couple notes in a Score Duel. :(

I neither have thin skin nor do I take these attacks personally (I have had very few directed towards me). I'm just irritated, and wanted to express my distaste for these inane, thoughtless, asinine attacks.

Actually, quite often trolls are simply bored. It's not out of anger or vengeance, it's just seeking something entertaining to do.

Good post but completely inaccurate. Boredom is a lot of it. Getting a rise out of people is a lot of it. Seeing how far you can push someone is a lot of it. People always say, don't feed the trolls. This is true, but people can't resist. They are just as bad as the trolls themselves. If someone gets their feelings hurt over a forum, then they need to talk things over with Dr. Phil.

Yes I would have to agree. The forums have started to be flooded with negativity and it is getting annoying. It is sad when the mods have to close multiple threads because people can't comprehend. It is just going to get worse the more popular the game is.

WE FOUND A TROLL IN DISGUISE GUYS. :D
Haha, just kidding. :)
Perhaps it isn't out of direct anger or vengeance, but something deep inside them in their consciences. They were picked on and had people disrupt their fun at other points in their lives, so now they're taking it out in their familiar habitat.
Actually, boredom is a much better explanation. But I would have to say it'd be boredom coupled with immaturity...
Edit:
Boredom is a lot of it. Getting a rise out of people is a lot of it. Seeing how far you can push someone is a lot of it.
I think this proves the whole immaturity thing.
I think people just need their human interaction asdfs. Whether it's positive or negative human interaction doesn't matter to them, they need it.
If you're bored, and need some more human asdfs, there's two things you can do. Make people happy, or make people mad. Some people are just better at one.

Actually, I did used to be quite a heavy troll. Not here, though.
The "Chanology" stuff kinda killed trolling for me.
Some people do troll out of immaturity, but not all. I trolled because to me, the funniest thing is seeing someone make an idiot of themselves.

Boredom is definitely part of it. It's not just these forums either. I've posted a ton on a number of forums, and they've all become a lot ruder lately. More people just being crass, aggressive and intolerant, rather than having fun discussing and debating. While I love playing games online, it often becomes a chore with some of the BS that goes on. Heaven forbid somebody miss a few notes or get killed a lot in a FPS - the name-calling begins immediately.
It's just sad that so many people can't handle being online, but it is how things are, unfortunately.

I keep band quickplay online and rockband.com/forums separate. There have been plenty of times online that I have been called a tranny in quickplay (my gamertag is tyranny of men), but I can deal with that. I don't have discussions with these people about music, popular culture, and general life stuff. This forum is a community where for the most part people get along and have a good time. It is not scorehero.com, it is not 4chan...

Actually this is a community where we all bash each others favorite bands, we get angry at the DLC every week, and either we kiss Harmonix's ass or we ramble about how Harmonix keeps everyone in the dark.

You are way to bitter. Harmonix does keep people in the dark, a la the Rush album, and why not get angry at the DLC? It makes people feel better.

This is not the first time this has happened, the closer we get to the release of RB2 and GHWT the worse it will get even now since music games are so popular, I think we are just getting small glimpses of the things to come. The same happened last year with the release of RB1 and GH3.
I say, just be cool and stand your ground.
