Friends, neighbors, loved ones, and of course, beloved family members...

We are gathered here to remember an old friend that gave us hours of enjoyment, and allowed us a small look into otherwise unfathomable life of playing songs that we all knew and sang to on the radio, that we made out to with chicks in the back seats of our cars on hot, summer nights, and yes, gave a light of hope to those of us who still enjoy playing the "air guitar" in our morning showers.

You'll be missed, dear friend, missed by the masses that once thought, "OMG, I can really play the guitar!," or the serious minded fans that thought, "Totally cool! I'm restarting the band!" Yes, Guitar Hero...you were all that and so much, much more.

But as the seasons change, so do the winds of time, my friend, and upon the approaching eve of your death..a death that will only be puncuated by the arrival of Rock Band and the many DLC it shall breed...we can only say a simple, but fond goodbye to you. You got us here, and you showed us the wisdom of your ways, and we all appreciated it, but it's time to move on now to another generation...another era...another level that stamps into the ledgers of time...THIS IS ROCK BAND!!

That's one of the best first posts I've ever seen. ;)

I wish I'd said something that dramatic... I think for my first post I asked if the game was going to have unlockable guitars.

I believe that was totally necessary. We sort of owe the success of RB to GH.

I guess the question is...

ARE YOU READY TO ROCK?!?!?!?

NO! GIVE US FIVE MORE MINUTES! WE STILL NEED TO VISIT THE BATHROOM AND GET OUR CONCERT T-SHIRTS, AND THERE'S THIS TEXT MESSAGE FROM OUR BFF JILL WE NEED TO REPLY TO, AND THEN AFTER THAT, WE'LL BE REASONABLY READY TO ROCK! THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION IN THIS MATTER!

Guitar Hero III, Rest in Pieces (it gets worse the more I play it).

Long Live Rock Band.

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called 'life'...

Ok, Prince references aside, the Guitar Hero franchise is dead to me. It's that simple. A friend illustrated it to me in a way that I think is very true of Rock Band;

"You know, Guitar Hero is a lot like many rock bands throughout the decades. When it first came out, it was this brand new thing that no one had ever experienced before and it took the people by storm. It was an instant groundbreaking hit, and it was amazing from the get go, what with its shiney-newness and great feel to it. Then, as the years went on, Guitar Hero II came out, which was by no means a bad game, it was still pretty amazing, but noticeably 'different' then the first. Then Guitar Hero III came out and everything went to hell, the characters are all sluggish, the game play is weak, and the general feel of it all sucks. Guitar Hero is now at that stage in every band's life when they're all washed-up and sold-out, so now they do 'acoustic albums' and 'charity benifits' just to keep going under the haze of there once-upon-a-time life as rock stars."

That was very touching, I feel like it was the proper sendoff. We will miss you, but we all know you have gone on to a better place. I will take time out of my busy tour I'm about to go on around the world to come back by and visit the grave for a little while every now and then. GH1 and GH2, you will not be forgotten!

Uh...no. I'm pretty sure Rock Band takes up a lot of space, too much to allow an underling such as Guitar Hero to share its spot. Sorry. Please try again.

Unless Rock Band gets all the songs from previous GH games, I don't see why anyone would never play GH again. Too many good songs to leave behind.

It will also be interesting to see how they do in the market place... GH's brand recognition and cheaper price vs. Rock Band's multiple instrruments. I would hold off on predicting the death of GH a bit.

Or, both games could coexist as even HMX, the developers of Rock Band, say.

You know, Nick...you make a very valid point there, but I disagree with both you and HMX...think about it...

Rock Band will be the ULTIMATE PARTY game...hands down....

Scenario: You have 5 or 6 of your buds over, drinking, joking, messing around...whatever...then you break out Rock Band vs. Guitar Hero and ask what everyone would like to play. Now, given the number of players each game can support instrument wise, not to mention the number of songs, and I think you have a clear answer as to what they'll choose.

Don't get me wrong, though...I'm sure the single player mode of Rock Band will be just as awesome (as Guitar Hero proved...God rest his soul)...but I've been to parties where people were literally waiting in line to play Guitar Hero and play there favorite song, so I can only IMAGINE what Rock Band will bring to the scene....;)

I'm glad that most GH fans who are taking the leap to RB won't forget their roots. In a way, I'm gonna miss GH, but I know I can always go back and visit for awhile. RB is the future of music based gaming and I'm excited to be part of it. I have a pre-order at Gamestop and I'm hoping they make good on their promise. My only "gripe", even that's too strong of a word, is the lack of wireless instruments in the bundle. I'll be spending as much time keeping the cords out of the dogs mouths as I will playing the game itself!! Just a quick question....can RB be played by just one person?

That is true. I see Rock Band as the social game, and Guitar Hero as the more hard core single player experience (songs that feature more interesting guitar at the expense of boring drums/bass/vocals could be in GH but wouldn't make sense in RB). That's why there is room for both games.

Guitar Hero didn't die, it just joined foces with a drum and mic!

I really think Rock Band is the true successor to Guitar Hero 2, not GH3. So, imagine that GH lives on in RB, and that GH3 is just an impostor, or some kind of bastard son.

Guitar Hero is alive and well... look at the sales.

And with the limited supply of Rock Band... it doesn't look like it will be losing the battle of the bands just yet.

I will have to agree with the thread starter. I went and traded in my GH 3 and GH 2. To get Rock Band. Why? I was bored with GH3 and 2... Plus, I was having issues with 3 getting online to play ranked matches. I had the game two weeks and every night I would try to play ranked and I couldn't do it.

So yeah. Burried in the dirt you are GH! VIVA LA ROCK BAND!

Well, let's not be too hasty to kill off Guitar Hero.

There is room for a focused, guitar-only game, provided that it does new and cool things (boss battles sadly are one and not the other) and delivers content for hardcore guitar difficulty freaks. Notice the huge call for difficult metal songs... ScoreHero's emphasis on nailing Expert tracks and getting higher and higher scores, for instance. GH could take note of that and produce games to cater to the score-grabbing crowd.

For the casual and group players, Rock Band is the better way to go, though. It's more about cooperation than competition. Neither is worse than the other in general, but on a person by person basis, it comes down to what they want out of a game.

...and myself, I want cooperation, because I can't even get off Medium difficulty. :) I'd rather take part in a friendly community like this than deal with trash talking score whores.

Sometimes the only way for a series to go up is to go down first. As much as I've wanted to rail on GH3 and support RB, that's how I see it... They've taken a misstep--whether intentional or not--and that sets them up to come back even more strongly with the next game. The fans have had a chance to voice their opinions on various aspects of the game (animation, difficulty, restricted co-op, etc.) and with the sales of the game still strong, Neversoft is certain to put out an additional game in the series and then we'll see if they address some of these things. If the elements in the next game don't balance a little more on the fun side instead of challenging, if they don't have a better DLC strategy and offering, if they continue to put asinine restrictions on things like third-party controllers and the like, then they will see themselves eclipsed by RB and its onslaught of DLC and inevitable sequel. If they adapt, then we'll continue to see two good rhythm games that everyone can enjoy.

There is still room out there for a game that focuses on just guitar. But they can't afford to just dial it in like they did with GH3 now. They have to evolve the game (and I don't mean with the new "battle mode" either) and somehow do so in a way that won't alienate their fanbase.

I got to agree with that as it is one of my fav's as well. But I'll also get in nostalgic runs of Freebird, Monkey Wrench and Dead as I find all of them to be really fun tracks to play.

I still can't believe we didn't get even one GnR track on the disc. I really hope in the future that HMX gets out some DLC of their stuff.

Brothers! I just can't get into the whole moving-my-hand-in-order-to-hit-the-orange-button thing. I'm a Medium player for life! Hahaha.

And, yeah, I wouldn't cound GH completely out either. They've got serious brand recognition at this point. I think the only way to beat that is to inform as many people as possible that RB is made by the originators of GH and that its much more fun. As someone else in this thread said, GH4 has the potential to be amazing *if* all the kinks are worked out but they've got a long way to go for that to happen.

I guess for me I can't really put GH2 (specifically), down as of yet probably because I still have things that I need to accomplish (i.e. beating Jordan on Expert... I'm stuck at like 58% T_T). It's also just so nostalgic and fun to play :)

One thing I know for sure is that when I get my hands on Rockband...my time with GH2 is DEFINITELY going to decrease ;)

What i'm trying to learn how to do is play and sing at the same time. It's a little hard for me right now =T Anyone have some tips on how to get better at it (besides practice)? :)

Yes... as this season changes to the colder part of the year; one can only look back at the arrival of GH2 adn when that person got it... the cool air filling our lungs as we jumped off our couches hoping the PS2 plugs didn't come undone... Rest well good friend you are truly climbing the stairway to heaven.... except you Lou!

Grab a song with simple lyrics like "Radium Eyes", and play the hell out of it. Start learning the lyrics and singing along. When you can sing through the chord parts while singing you can probably move up to say... Heart-shaped box.

There will be a point where you'll feel like you can ignore your hands. They'll take care of themselves.

WARNING!
The following game GH3 includes the following:

1. A robot disguised as a drummer.
2. A blood-shot eyed singer whose mouth never moves...only his chin...
3. Less cartoonish drawings from the previous 2 GHs.(Not cool!)
4. ANOTHER Rage Against the Stupid Machine song!

Quoted for awesome truth. There's no reason for us to ever stop playing the Guitar Hero we know and love, unless they bring all the songs to Rock Band, of course.
