PS3 wireless receiver strangeness

The little black box USB receiver used to always be 'on' with the red light blinking. All I'd have to do is turn on the guitar and rock away. Recently the behavior has changed such that I have to come push the button on the receiver to get the light to start blinking and get a connection.

Not that it's terribly broken, but why would the behavior change like that? How do other peoples behave?

I've had the exact same thing happen with one of my PS3 Strats.

A further piece ov information that I can add is that the receiver doesn't appear to even connect to the USB port until the button is pressed (or the receiver is unplugged from the port and reconnected).

If anybody has any idea what the problem is or how to fix it (short of an RMA), I'd be interested as well.
