View Full Version : Rock Band Street Date Broken
Darklor

I went into a Wal-Mart in New York (not the city), and found Rock Band SP ED on the shelf. The manager on duty keyed in the sale since scan didn't work. She initially tried to charge me $200, but reduced it to $169.99.
Needless to say, My friends and I shredded it up for a while. 1) Guitar feels great, 2)Drums have a learning curve 3) Singing isn't easy either.
Went back to get a second copy with my friends, but even though the boxes were still on the shelf when we arrived, they were quickly pulled when the second shift manager realized they were breaking street date. Sorry amigos.
Anyway, if you have questions feel free to email me at aeonix01@hotmail.com

Here's where I beg and plead for companies to please GET RID OF STREET DATES. It only leads to more problems like this.
I think ultimately street dates are a good thing. Imagine if there was no street date for Rock Band, and all you knew was that various stores would be getting them in some time this week. You would have to check every store every day and hope that some random people didn't just casually buy all of the copies on a whim. At least with the street date you know what day you have to attack the store.
Of course this doesn't really apply for ordering it online, but then you have to look at it from the perspective of the online retailers. What happens if Amazon gets their copies before EBGames, then all of the people who pre-ordered from EBGames get pissed that they aren't getting theirs the same day, etc. etc. and next thing you know some unscrupulous Canadian posts hardcore porn on here.

Just finished IMing a bit with Darklor. Nice guy. :)
I'll do some work for him and repeat my interrogation about Solo World Tour...
It's pretty much what I was figuring. Tier grinder, no twists or other gameplay mechanics, just beat song after song. You can only create your soloist, no band members, no naming the band, no logo. Generic fill-ins are used for the other 3 members (and this hold true to multiplayer, any unplayed instruments get fill-ins).
Lame. But, not unexpected. Solo is basically a glorified practice mode. At least I feel more confident about getting my sis and brother-in-law on board for BWT, so I'm not too worried. (I started them on GH2/3 and they were hooked instantly despite being n00bs at it.)

Or, glass half full, it's "just" an improved Guitar Hero game that also has Drums and Karaoke. The 'grinder' you constantly belittle is still way, way more than any other music game has had. :)

I took a break from studying for my exam I have later today, and called up my local Wal-Mart to see if they had the game in. It went something like this:
Me: Do you have a game called Rock Band?
Wal-Mart person: What?
M: Rock Band.
W: Ok, let me check.
M: Ok
1 minute later...
W: No, we don't have it. Did it come out yet?
M: I think so, yeah.
W: Ok, let me check the back room.
M: Ok.
5 minutes later...
W: Sorry, we haven't gotten it in yet.
So sad. I was willing to take an F on this test, by driving out there to get it, but oh well.

When you compare it to those games, sure. But compare it to BWT. BWT is practically a music RPG, integrating all sorts of creative opportunities and decision making and varied goals into the concept of Doing Well At Hitting Notes.
There's no reason elements of that couldn't be added to a solo experience, so, it IS half-empty. But yes, that also means it's half-full... while it doesn't have the revolutionary approach BWT has, it's still as fun as a GH game or a KR game. So I am going to enjoy it, don't get me wrong... I just wish they'd given solo as much lovin' as they gave multiplayer.
The game IS allowed to be flawed-but-fun, folks. It'll be really good, just not perfect.

Something that interests me is the difference between the setlist order between the various insturments. I know I'm going to hit up Wal-Mart once I'm done with classes for the day... 90 minutes from now. Even if they don't have it maybe I can rock out on their demo unit for a bit (Although they made it such that it's terrible uncomfortable to play- standing a few inches from the display case and being fored to stare straight up)

I was able to interview Aeonix01 (Darklor) about the game and he gave me some information about the setlist for the solo Guitar (which will be updated tonight)
He's about almost in the middle of the game and here's the songs he has encountered so far
Beastie Boys - Sabotage
Mountain - Mississippi Queen
Radiohead - Creep
The Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop
Nine Inch Nails - The Hand That Feeds
Kiss - Detroit Rock City
Faith No More - Epic
OK Go - Here It Goes
Garbage - I Think I'm Paranoid
Nirvana - In Bloom
Foo Fighters - Learn to Fly
Weezer - Say It Ain't So
The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go
Queens of The Stone Age - Go With The Flow
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
The rest he can't remember right now (he isn't at home) but more than likely that is all lower-tier (1st through 4th)

I don't think it's flawed at all. Everybody has the option to play BWT, and I think it kind of makes that mode special by forcing you to play with other people, or at least try to sing and play at the same time. It's like having 2 games in 1.
The only thing I think would have been nice in solo play is if you could customize each band member, but that's not really a big deal, since its hard to watch both the band playing around and the notes scrolling, at the same time.

Counter-point to your post: Competition. Want your customers? Be the first to get the game. Don't be a cheap-ass on shipping. Amazon got their games first? EB loses and learns their lesson or perpetually pays the price.
Why is it that I can buy a brand-new model TV as soon as the company gets stock but if a game gets behind the shelf before some silly date, I get cockblocked? Don't give me that stockholder crap, Samsung has stockholders just as much as EA.

A fair point but there are probably instances where even if EA tries to get it to Amazon and EB at the same time, delivery times from warehouses and other variables make it so that the first retailer who is able to ship the game gets to be so just by random luck, which makes it hard for a consumer to make a decision about where to buy from in the first place.

I think the difference basically comes down to marketing. Video game marketing is a carefully orchestrated undertaking these days, and having a set date for release helps build hype, etc. TVs and such have little or no marketing behind them. No one really cares when Samsung releases a new TV.

No one really cares when Samsung releases a new TV.
Everyone has an interest in some new gadget. Why should video games suddenly be any different? I'm sure some people were ****ting bricks when the first plasma was released.
Build hype? The game has been building hype for a very long time. Naturally a product shipped isn't going to be very far behind these current street dates. There's no massive hype explosion within a week's time. People have heard enough and have already decided with the info provided if the game is worth buying. There's already demos, there's been plenty of interviews on the web and TV, posters, mag ads...it's all done. Time to sell the game. It's produced, gold, and shipped.
EDIT: Addressing the shipping response
A fair point but there are probably instances where even if EA tries to get it to Amazon and EB at the same time, delivery times from warehouses and other variables make it so that the first retailer who is able to ship the game gets to be so just by random luck, which makes it hard for a consumer to make a decision about where to buy from in the first place.
Random luck? If a shipper wants business they will step up or lose their contract. Now if you mean within a day or two, understand that arrivals are already staggered. I could go on a wednesday after a street date to a gamestop and not get my game till 4pm, or go to the walmart across the street who got the game at 10am. The shipper winner game is already afoot.

True, but media is different. Games, books, and movies aren't gadgets, they have stories. There are spoilers and such. I'd be pissed if, while living in the Boondocks, had to wait a full week to get a game while everyone else talked about the ending.

Well, I don't think it's 'glorified practice' in bad way. It's just that the way it is structured, it is designed to make you a better guitar player/drummer/vocalist by progressively challenging you more with each song. The true meat of this game is going to be in co-operative play with other living humans, but the solo tour can make you better at that co-operative play. I don't see it as a bad thing at all, they've created a GREAT play mode to showcase where this game truly shines, plus given us several 'training' paths that we're all familiar with and enjoy just fine. If you can't find anyone, at all, ever, for BWT, then that's kinda sad but I have a feeling we'll all get plenty creative in finding band members.

I am looking at Walmart.com and there is no 360 bundle listed anymore, but the PS3 bundle is still on there and it says it is "In Limited Stores" and gives you the option to see if it is in a store near you. So some store somewhere must have entered their stock into the system or however it works. Usually items that aren't released yet don't have the find it in store option.

Best Buy and Sears also had stock showing online for GH3. It doesn't necessarily mean it's going to come out of the backroom, behind glass, or scanning through the register w/o a red flag. It's up to the employees to adhere to the stickers that are placed on the palettes not to sell before X date.
I hope these breaks change the way the media is distributed (read: like how Napster changed music distribution from a commercial standpoint), rather than just a few companies looking bad.

I seem to remember reading an interview with one of the HMX dudes (I can't seem to find the article in question at the moment unfortunately) and they were talking about this and that was precisely their view of what Solo should be... practice area to progressively hone your skills to be a better band mate. It fits in their whole view to make the game like the experience of playing in and being a part of a band. So the solo to me emulates the experience of someone practicing in their garage to get good enough to play in a band. Or at least thats what I get from it. I'm sure it will be as good as GH2 for me and thats pretty much all I'll need.

It's not going to suck, per se, it'll be just as enjoyable, and likely moreso due to the drums and vocal parts, as GHIII, but you'll just have to either miss out on the BWT modes, or muddle through by singing and playing an instrument at the same time.

After you complete the Endless Setlist, Aeris dies.
Bad news: Sephiroth runs through her back with a six-foot drumstick.
Good news: Rock Band Editor allows you to put your own band's logo on the drumstick!

BTW - I want to thank HMX, specifically those that mod these forums. When word of Mass Effect releasing to the general public popped up in the official Bioware forums, the posts were immediately deleted, and eventually the poster(s) were banned. Don't get me wrong, I love Bioware, but it's nice to see a developer just being cool w/ our discussion, when really they would have every right to lock this up and discourage us from sharing info...

Tell that to Canada for RB. Your point is moot. No one ever has access to media on the same day.
For something like Harry Potter, that would be unacceptable. For Rock Band it's a trade-off: get it to the entire US fairly, instead of later to everyone.

Great thought :) Harmonix's intellegent humor and polish have always hinted at as a laid back but successful group. At least if or until someone legally threatens them to remove the posts.

Well, it is tradition for the first person to announce that they got lucky and got a game early to take requests for videos... I was one of the first for GH2, so I've been there. I seriously did probably 40-50 videos for GH2 between 11/1 and 11/5 of last year.

From what I've seen so far, there aren't real surprises in the game. There are differences between mulitplayer and single like in multi your band can win a van or do a charity event for no money, just fans. Single player is pretty straight forward.
There will be a ton of DLC according to most sites, but I didn't get to check to see any. I also haven't tried to multiplayer online features yet to see if there are lag issues and such.

Send Sean or anyone at HMX a PM and ask if they'll play some on-line with ya. Not only will you get to play the game early, but you'll also be able to get schooled by the game's creators. Can anyone imagine a better fate?
Otherwise, I'd imagine your on-line experience will be a little...sparse. Unless you get lucky and can play on-line with some of the editors from the sites reviewing the game.

Can you confirm that you can "farm" the Solo Tour setlists that you've already completed to get extra cash for clothes, instruments, etc?
For example, in GH, once you five-starred on expert, that was as much cash as you could get. But RB has so much more to purchase, I'm hoping there isn't a limit to the cash you can earn for those goodies.

I haven't gone back to do songs over again.. pretty much 5 starred em on the first go, or just reset the song if I didn't.
I also noticed that while you can buy instr. and clothes in a store, you can't actually use points or money for additional songs.

Thanks for all the info (though we knew this part before hand). questions:
were there any other bundles available at your store?
do the instruments feel sturdy to you? (have you been to a bestbuy or anything)
On solo drums, what's an average score/streak for you?
thnx.

1) there were bundles in the wal-mart until the second shift. When I went back with a friend to get a second copy later on, grabbed the box, went to the register.. the new shift manager new it was street dated and wouldn't let us get it. They then pulled the remaining copies.
2)The instruments feel very sturdy, but I hadn't tried the demo ones. I've noticed a bit of latency at some points in the guitar.
3) I suck at drums, I only tried it for a minute at a friends house last night no a very easy song on easy and failed. I would say my streak would have been 8 for the one time I played. I'm most likely NOT a drummer... lol.

That's strange. Did they change how the bonus songs are unlocked? I really hope it's not set up so only BWT cash can unlock them or something like that.
Hopefully solo's farmable, so we can experiment with the character creator without worrying that we'll eventually empty our wallets and be unable to make any changes after that point...

in single player world tour there aren't any songs I've found to be truly unlockable. Just go from song to song.

I remember them saying that all songs can be announced in all career modes (BWT and each solo tour). There are no songs exclusive to one mode.

So c'mon, fess up. The manager was a relative wasn't it? I just can't believe a manager at Wal-Mart is stupid enough to manually key in an item when she gets a message stating it cannot be sold til 11/20. Either that, or what sort of fuss did you put up?

no, actually I don't know any of the employees there, and when I went back, the manager on duty was pissed off, and wanted to see my reciept (which I didn't have on me) from when I bought it. Said that the manager from before will be in plenty of trouble, and that home office would get a report of this anyway since she manually keyed in the purchase.
When she tried to scan it, it wouldn't ring through. No, I didn't put up a fuss, didn't have to.. as I said earlier in the other thread.. she had said "I have to ring it through manually like I did earlier"

In that video that showed part of the solo tour mode with some new bonus songs, they were just part of the tour; not really bonus songs any more. I think you just play them in the solo tour when they come up, and can unlock them for quickplay like the licensed songs.

I'm assuming the store'll be like skate, where when you buy an item you always have it and can change into it at any time without any additional cost, other than the initial purchase.
Also to Darklor, do you know if the register gave the DO NOT SELL BEFORE 11/20 error, or did it come up as an unknown item?

Uh huh. Because game developers are suing retailers left and right for breaking street date, right?
Street dates are broken constantly. Already BioShock and Halo 3, two of the biggest releases this year, have broken street dates. Mass Effect now has, as well.

The guy who gave the orders will get fired. The put a big orange sticker over the packing tape that says NOT TO BE SOLD UNTIL 11/20/07.
I remember when we got Burning Crusade in at my store. We had it in the back for 2 weeks. I was offered $300 to sell it early by this one guy. I resisted the temptation.
Edit: For Walmart, it may be no big deal, but game retailers would never dare! Besides, who in the hell cares? RB is out to at least one person on the community. I say we all go to his house and throw a huge RB party!

The little non special edition copies were marked that way ( found that out on my return trip), The big box wasn't marked.. it just woudln't ring through. A manager keyed it in. She won't get fired, she'll be written up / placed on warning.
I worked retail for 13 years.. trust me on this one. unless she's a screw up, then they'll get rid of her.
