View Full Version : I'm Hoping Mastodon has

The balls to stand up to Warner Bros. being signed to the WB label now I'm a bit worried WB has a bad habit of making bands change to fit a more mainstream audience.
They did the same with LP and A7X, even tho I dont like either as it is.
But does anyone think Mastodon WONT let WB change their sound like many other WB bands out there?

People said that **** about A7X too...
I just wiki'd it, it seems as if WB bought out Reprise recently and Reprise is now a sub co. WB is just the distributer..
But I may be wrong

i've only met two of the guys in mastodon, but they don't seem to be the type to let something like that happen.
i'm sure they'll change somewhat... they're a progressive band who is now being placed into a new situation...
but i don't think they'll turn into crap because WB tells them to sound more like nickelback or whatever...

What I mean is like change the way they present thier music and how they play their instruments... vocal structure etc..
AeroZeppelinSevenfold

hopefully not. I'm not a huge fan of mastadon, but I wouldn't like to see any band go mainstream. A7X is one of my favorite bands, but I think that their older stuff is much better than their new stuff with warner bros., even though the warner bros music is pretty decent.

That's bound to happen, lest the band grow stale. I don't know if they will go for a more mainstream sound, though.

Well Mastodon is a very unique and talented band that doesn't deserve to be forced into being "better"
They're already better than 90% the crap out there anyways, they dont need to change the way they sound completely because some ignorant record label wants them to make them money.
If Mastodon's sound changed I want it to be because they want to try something new or just show a different expression through their album...
Look at RUSH's return to making music in 2001... was way different but good, but they werent forced to do it... they did because they wanted to try something new...
instantdeath999
08-30-2008, 10:43 PM
That's not what I was implying. I believe they will change their sound, because they are not the type of band who likes to make the same album over and over again (AC/DC?). I don't think they will "go mainstream" though.

If they do I will kill WB...
Mastodon is a great band... and all their albums are great. Blood Mountain was a welcome change with the cleaner vocal style... but I perfered them in Leviathan and Remission.
Making the same sound over and over again is no good, but changing for a different audience thus hurting the fans that made them popular is just BS...
Hint : Metallica, A7X

Hint : Metallica,
I still stand against the "Metallica made their song more mainstream" thing. I've never seen evidence of it.
From what has been said in various interviews:
Black Album was created due to the difficulty recreating the musically complex songs from AJFA.
Load/Reload was definitely an extension of The Black Album... but it was not made catering to the mainstream. What was popular at the time? Grunge. Load/Reload does not have the sound the previous album had. If it weren't for the previous album, it would have never hit the number 1 spot.
St Anger was nowhere near a mainstream sound.
Sorry for getting off-topic.

It was pretty funny though, I was at Mayhem Fest and got extremely thirsty and started wanting a Rockstar. I couldn't find any though, even though it was sponsored by them and I saw people drinking them everywhere. So I wandered around for a while and finally found a tent giving them away for free (which was awesome, because I was totally willing to pay a ridiculous amount of money for one). And while I was enjoying my drink, I turned around and was like "Holy ****, that's Mastodon."

Load and Reload were definatly Mainstream...
But they strayed from their original sound... It wasn't "metal" but it was good.
I just learned... Death Magnetic is being produced by *dramatic drum roll* WB....

Eh, maybe, though they were released when Alternative and Grunge were more of the mainstream (well, Kurt had just died, so it was starting to fade).

I just don't see it happening. I mean sure, the label may push you to do more mainstream, but you still gotta do it. Mastodon seems to have 2 straight up cool dudes who don't seem all that interested in mainstream acceptance....to which I say huzzah!

Very much so. They didn't waste any time plugging their new CD or anything like most other bands did either. They squeezed every second out of their stage time, which is awesome.

Yeah, they're alright, not as good as Underoath or Maylene and the Sons of Disaster(their old singer's band) though.
But anyways, back on topic, I really doubt that they would sell out. But who knows, you never know with record labels these days.

I saw them live, I think they did a concept album theme. I've been noticing them for years and saw 'em at Mayhem, where they didn't talk to the crowd at all. It was odd. They're great musicians, though, and I wish I had a clue what songs they were playing.

I don't think they performed Blood Mountain, I think they just did a random medley that was fused together by odd electronic vocal tracks in-between songs. They didn't play Colony of Birchmen or March of the Fire Ants or any other song I would recognize, at least not to my knowledge.

This is what they did when I went too. Except I think they did Colony of Birchmen and know they did March of the Fire Ants, because my friend told me the name when they were playing it. They didn't play Sleeping Giant though, which was the only song I knew before going.

Because of GH3?
If Mastodon can improvise songs like that live that would explain why they are very good song writers

Mastodon definately won't change for WB. I've been into them since remission came out. They only get astonishingly better as a band with each album. Blood Mountain in my opinion is one of the best modern metal albums out. Their music has gotten so complex over the years. If they change it won't be for WB it'll be on their own accord.

I think Mastodon changes have a neutral effect. That isn't to say that the albums never get better. On the contrary, I think they're all solid. They just have their own different strengths and weaknesses while staying the same band.
I'm sure they'll be fine on the next album. I heard it was pushed back to 2009, though. I'm excited to see how they change in it, though.

Found it
"I think most of our new material is going to be more under the rock category, but it’s pretty epic and involved, extremely layered, broad, melodic, dark, and creepy. When we met up with Brendan, he had heard some of our demos and he liked some of the rock elements that we had with our stuff. We told him that we were interested in recording, quote, “a classic rock record that will hopefully have a long shelf life and have solid songs from start to finish, and that will live a lot longer than just listening to it a few times and shelving it.” Our favorite records of all time that we always constantly revisit in our own collection are by bands like Journey, Yes, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Kansas, and all the **** that we grew up with and were inspired by and continue to revisit. We kind of wanted to attempt to capture a record like that, [at least] in our eyes and ears. The stars had aligned perfectly because Brendan’s a perfect match, a funny dude and a great musician who has an amazing ear. He can pick out little things that we can try to do that we hadn’t even thought of before, whether it be vocally or sonically with the guitars or something. So it is going to be more of a rock kind of Count Chocula-meets-Deep Purple thing. That’s kind of what we’re saying. We finish that record in September. There’s currently not a title, other song titles aren’t confirmed, and that’s all we can really say about that record now because we’re not going to spoil the element of mystery."
Clearly saying they want their "classic" album to be more of a staple Prog Album

I read that Troy said he is going for a more dark prog/hard rock approach on this next album and it will be a bigger departure from the last 3 than Blood Mountain was for the first 2. I have faith he said "Hell we just want to make great music, if at the end of the day the four of us go "I'm really diggin' this" then we're doing right"
And if they're diggin their newer stuff how can it be bad? They like Kansas, Gensis, Yes, King Crimson and Journey
