I recently bought a Roland electronic drum kit and am going to learn to play in real life. That means without a scrolling screen in front of me. I want to learn to play for real.

My question is what programs are the best for me to learn? Are there computer programs? What are the best DVD's for learning. How about the best websites? Any recommendations on youtube videos?

I am really taking this seriously. I want to learn to just play freestyle over a song. Then be good enough to do covers. I know this is going to take years. But i'm ready to take the first steps.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

If you really want to get serious you're going to have learn from books.

"Stick Control for the Snare Drummer" by George Lawrence Stone

"Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer" Ted Reed

Get yourself a metronome (Optional but it would really help, especially if you want to be free-styling over songs).

Count out-loud what you are playing always.

Study the first two pages of those books for at least 2 weeks. Buy a practice pad.

You should be able to play simple songs if you've mastered what I've just said.

Then all you have to do is just keep reading the books and studying different kinds of drummers, songs, music and listen closely to the beats you want to learn and counting.... counting is big #1, learn that one most of all.

if you can, get a private drum teacher.

if not, Alfred's Drum Method book is great

get a metronome as well

If you want to learn seriously, buy some books, a metronome, and look around for some good lesson instructors.
