"Rock Band will still feature pre-selected three-song packs for download, but they will instead cost $5.49 (440 Microsoft points on Xbox 360). Songs will also be available individually for $1.99. Harmonix has said future songs will be sold individually for as little as $.99 (80 Microsoft points), and as much as $2.99 (240 points). However, "the vast majority" will come in at the standard $1.99 price point. The developer did not say how much full-album downloads would be, or when the first albums would be released."
"Downloaded tracks will be integrated into all of the game's modes, and will be playable online only if all players have purchased the songs."
never know if someone is gonna beat me to it...
Looks like I'm first, YAY!
Anywho it's got a list for the first 5 weeks after launch...looks AWESOME!
So, I'm in class and kinda got yelled at, but totally worth it...

I know no matter what price they set, it was going to get criticism, but it appears they managed to undercut GH3 and provide some flexibility via singles and bundling.
IMHO, it's not a bad price schedule. I'll be broke but I'll also be happy. :) I'd call this solid proof that certain companies listened to the fans and learned from the mistakes of certain other companies who completely mucked up their DLC strategy.
And I played a lot of those tracks and THEY WERE AWESOME !@(*#!!*(*!!!!!
Whenever I bought GH2 DLC, I always skipped going out to lunch for work that day. The savings on a fast food restaurant always paid for the pack. With this mass of DLC goodness, I may STARVE myself to death. Way to go HMX jerks!

****ing A right man, this kicks the **** our of GH! $5.50 for three songs, and $2 or $1 per individual. I might not be vastly cheaper, but it's good enough for me!

You save .10 for buying the bundle. I guess I'll just buy the songs I want. $2... no biggie. For the option to choose, I'm in. THanks Harmonix. :)
I bet the 99 cent songs will probably be Harmonix bands (considering I don't really play the bonus tracks much, I'll skip 'em.)

Schweet, man. Seems like HMX listened to all the posts in that DLC pricing thread. I'm pretty happy about the $1.99 pricing. Besides, they're probably barely making any money at that price point.

Excellent. I believe I've been quoted before as saying I will get 'most' DLC at 2 bucks a pop. Well done HMX. And the Metallica songs announced? Excellent also! This is going to rock so hard.

Color me unimpressed. $2 a song does not in any way "take my breath away". I'm well aware there are significant reasons why the cost is $2 a song, but I don't care in the slightest. I knew $1 a song was unreasonable, but that doesn't mean I think $2 is a good price. As far as I'm concerned, this whole DLC thing just fundamentally doesn't work. Digital distribution, on a song-by-song level, should simply not cost more than double retail. Oh well.
At least there's a discount for buying the packs of three, and the $.99 songs sound cool.

Maroon 5.
Just kidding. I don't know, I think you hit all the ones I could think of that could demand that sort of price. Maybe AC/DC.
Color me unimpressed. $2 a song does not in any "take my breath" away.
I kind of agree. I'm still breathing as good as ever. I'm happy with the prices, but that one quote had me thinking it might be even better (~$1.50). Sure it's only 50 cents, but that adds up fast.
AdamBomb629
11-14-2007, 01:54 PM

I meant per song (and it's about .15 cents rather than .10).

This is like the one time that I wish I owned a PS3 rather than a 350 (that is, until MGS4 is released, or they mage a next-gen Sly Cooper game).
I would much rather pay cash (espeicially with the ballooning Canadian dollar) than use Xbox points which don't adjust well to the changing relative value of currencies. Canadians will end up paying a little more per song because of the conversion to Xbox points is less favourable than the CDN/USD exchange rate.
I bought a 1400 pt card a few months back for like 20 bucks, with the money the way it is now, 1400pts should only cost like 15.5 bucks. There are always draw backs to balance the benefits of living in Canada eh?
This has nothing to do with RB's pricing, just the online-currency structure that MS uses. Not a big deal, but I just thought I'd say a kind word about Sony; their choice to use real money is better than MS's 'fun bucks' model.
The RB pricing structure is about what I would have imagined. I'm pleased that its not more expensive than it is.

Dude, buying in packs of 3 is basically $1.83 per song. $1.83 vs $2 is going to change your mind? DLC is basically an extended money making device for studios, but this doesn't seem to be that bad a deal.

I was at this party the other night, and in the middle of lots of rap music, the DJ threw on You Shook Me All Night Long. I heard that song so many times that I started to hate it, but hearing it blasting at like a trillion decibels definitely made it great again...or maybe it just seemed great relative to all the other music they were playing that night.

not going to lie, I am disapointed it's not ~1.50, but what the hell, if it was 1.50 I'd ***** that it wasn't 1$ (maybe.. I don't know. I was really hoping for 1.50 so I don't think I would have complained.)
It's still better than GH3's dlc pricing, and I'm estatic that future songs could be as low as 1$ each.

Probably the same as in other songs. If you've watched any videos for say, Tom Sawyer or Don't Fear the Reaper, basically you only play one of the bass hits. Which is a bit of a bummer and really drives home the fact that there's only one bass pedal. :(

maybe $2.99 is for covers since they have to hire a band to remake them
HeXcoda
11-14-2007, 02:36 PM
Any price better than GH3's is a win. It's not LOADS better but it's definitely better, and more palatable. A la carte seals the deal.
Also worth note -- $0.99 songs are mentioned. I'm thinking this is for HMX indies and for the "nerd rock" pack that was mentioned in interviews as an example of a pack that would be for a select audience and not everyone. Can you say Optimus Rhyme and MC Frontalot? Awwyeah, I hope so.
Still, I'm looking forward to details on Nevermind... I really, really want that. Badly.

28.50 the first week if ya buy everything... and that's not including Who's Next which is also stated for week one. And another $22 for the rest of the packs listed... not including albums. So I'm thinking potentially $70 worth of DLC within the first four weeks after the official launch.
Ouch my wallet.

Nope.
Chalk another one up in the "unimpressed" camp.
Sure, it is better than the GH series download prices, but making comparisons to that is cheap and sad. That is like saying that your girlfriend shouldn't complain about you being an unsupportive jerk, 'cause at least you don't slap her around like "some other people you could mention".
The list of available titles is wonderful, absolutely. No question.
The ability to purchase 3-packs or individual titles is ... well ... to be expected, really. Don't be fooled, cadets. This is just plain old business sense. Non-raping style business sense. Forcing people to purchase 3-packs in order to get one song was a short-lived business model that could *not* work in the long haul, when you're front-loaded with tons of selection. It can only work when you have limited downloads and limited selection, like certain other games. So we should really just see it for what it is. Standard "business as usual". What they had to do to make the system work. Well done, but no kudos.
The price point? Not low enough to allow gamers to spend freely. After the initial blush is gone, we'll all have to be very selective about what we download. At these prices, you purchase 25 songs at the price of a new game. So, sure, you'll pick favourites, and you'll pick 3-packs of bands you love. But soon you'll have to slow down. Soon you'll have to stop.
Even the 3-pack price point isn't enough to justify choosing an entire third song, if it isn't one you know you want, at that price point. If I only like two songs, that third song costs me $1.49 to get the pack. Not enough of a deal to make me switch over. That, to me, is a mistake. The price-point on a "deal" should be enough to sway me if I'm on the fence, trying to choose between buying two-that-I-like, and adding the third I'm not so hot on.
So do the thought experiment. Imagine one like the "punk pack", another theme pack (say, Grammy Winners, or Live Aid Performers) and it has two that you love and one that you're so-so on. At $1.49 you're not going to be swayed. It isn't the same as it is with a band that you love, is it?
So they've only managed to "sway" those that are already converted, if you see what I mean.
I love the selection of DLC from the first month, but I can't afford all of it, and I can't afford to set the precedent of buying all of it. So I have to start being selective now. I suspect we're all in the same boat.
So as far as I'm concerned, they made an error in judgement. An error measured in cents, but an error which will cost them many dollars out of my wallet in the long run, and that means many dollars out of all of our wallets.
They had me ... oh, they had me *bad* ... and they let me get away.

I'm curious about this, too. When I first saw $3, I thought "9 minute Metallica track."
But And Justice For All clocks in at 9.5 minutes (great song for this game, BTW), and it's priced just like everyone else. I hope that we don't see the Master of Puppets stuff come in at three dollars a pop, that wouldn't feel right to me.
Possibly $3 a song is for really long premium stuff, like Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
I love the Beatles, but I wouldn't pay $3 for a three minute Beatles song.

28.50 the first week if ya buy everything... and that's not including Who's Next which is also stated for week one. And another $22 for the rest of the packs listed... not including albums. So I'm thinking potentially $70 worth of DLC within the first four weeks after the official launch.
Ouch my wallet.

I'm kinda glad that the premium pricing option will be there right off the bat. It's kinda like HMX is saying, "Look, some songs/artists are just going to be damn expensive to get, so if we get them, we're gonna need you to buck up for it, ok?" And I'm fine w/ that.
As long as that premium artist is Tool. Or Floyd. Or Zep. Or hell, even Pearl Jam.

Wishful thinking. I'm still hoping that DLC albums are based on albums and not per song. Like every album would cost xx.xx no matter how many songs are on it.... but that seems unlikely.

So when it's released in Australia that will equate to about $6.10.
Hopefully its not any higher than $6.50, although i can see them trying to ask as much as $10 for it, just coz they like to rip off aussie.

Unless a lot of tracks see that $2.99 price point, I think this makes all of Rock Band's DLC a HUGE STEAL.
GH3 DLC songs are roughly $2.00 each, but you're forced so spend $6.25 all at once for songs that only let you play guitar and bass/rhythm. And they don't work in most of the game's modes.
Rock Band DLC songs are going to mostly undercut all of GH3's content by offering cheaper songs in an a la carte fashion. Not to mention YOU CAN PLAY 4 INSTRUMENTS and each song will be usable in every game mode (including multiplayer Band World Tour).
This is pretty good news. The only bad part is ... where is Who's Next on this schedule? :(

Now that we know how much DLC will cost, here's a question. To play DLC online with a friend will you both have to have it? (like maps in halo or whatever) or will just one of you need the song purchased (like DLC for crackdown. I'm guessing not simply due to the need to have the song data stored localy and you have to pay to download it to store it... unless there's a temp transfer thing...)
Just curious as I would love to play online with a friend but we both have different musical tastes so I'm sure we'll both be buying different tracks. But if I could try some of his it might convince me to buy it myself...

I have nearly 25,000 pts that I got at 1/2 price when Circuit City was selling 1600 pt cards for $9 each. I went a bit crazy and stocked up cause I knew Rock Band would have lots of goodies for me to buy. Happy to see my half-price money will be going a bit farther then I thought. :D
That imo is a great 'feature' of the points system, sure on the PS3 you can use actual cash rather then silly points, but from time to time you can get points for cheap or free! I've gotten 3200pts for nothing in promos online. Effectively it puts everything on live on sale. That doesn't happen on the PS3.

Two of my friends work at Gamestop and they get a little discount off of the Microsoft point card things. That makes it even cheaper for me:D . Add that to the fact that we are sharing Rock Band between four people and all planning on buying DLC so that divides that 28 something someone quoted for the first week by four and I will have paid 7 something dollars and gotten to play all of that :)

Gamespot doesn't have too many articles but the majority of theirs are really awesome and surprising! I'm impressed they got this, they not only have the dates of the song releases but also the pricing? Amazing!
I can't believe so many songs are being released the week of the 20th, thats just so impressive on Harmonix's part. 15 songs in the first week of release and another 12 in the coming 4 weeks. Not to mention full albums, this is extremely amazing!
No telling when the full albums will be released though. I assume the Who's will be the week of the 20th as well. But as for Nevermind and others, I guess we'll just wait and see. No word on any Greatful Dead being released either, which is interesting.
I'm really pleased with the pricing $2 average for individual songs is awesome, and a cheaper $5.50 for sets of 3s is amazing! I could see albums of about 10 songs will fall into a $12 to $15 range.
I wonder what songs will be more and less expensive though, and why.

I know it may be to do with not having master recordings but I am a bit gutted that 2 of the Bowie songs are covers and nearly 1/2 of the total songs are covers. Fantastic. Better than GH DLC pricing for twice the gameplay and apparently (though I wouldn't be SO sure regarding the "packs") the ability to buy individual songs. Excellent.
For those (couple) complaining or moping around over the price... you have no appreciation for the value of time or risk (meaning you're probably still in High School). At least Harmonix is proving their commitment to this platform, they're putting a lot of eggs in this basket (and it will do well, no doubt) sounds to me like there'll be full time staffers working on DLC for the game. I think all things considered... the pricing is extremely fair.
The reason to be pissed at GH2's first few packs pricing was because it was existing content that (presumably) the licenses were already paid on. It was also content many people had already paid for (indirectly) via the first game. You were basically paying $5-6 for work done on creating the note charts for a bass track. Anything new after that was fair IMO. Considering how many of these are covers, the pricing is even THAT much better because there's that much more effort into the production of the song. While I know some of you may not like the covers (I sometimes actually prefer them to the originals) that doesn't change the fact there's more production involved in bringing it to the game.
BTW, I'd like to say this again.. PUHLEEEZE re-release all GH1 and GH2's Bonus Tracks for RB. Licensing shouldn't be an issue for 80-90% of them due to how many are in-house bands and there are a lot of fans of these bonus songs. (You guys were smart enough to multi-track all the instruments and singing right? RIGHT? :) I'd probably buy most off GH1 and easily half from GH2 and that's even at $2...though, again, one would expect lower licensing (and they are repeat tracks) so $1 would proably be "expected" by most.

Taken from Gamespot
Since Rock Band was first announced by Harmonix and MTV Games in March, the developers have made no secret of their ambitious plans for downloadable content. As the game's release has drawn closer, information about those plans has trickled out. At the E3 Media and Business Summit, Harmonix said it would be offering full downloadable albums from artists like The Who, with more tracks from Metallica, The Grateful Dead, and The Ramones among those that gamers could add on to the retail game.
With Rock Band set for release next Tuesday, Harmonix today finally took the wraps off its downloadable content model today. The studio has apparently heard complaints regarding the mandatory three-song bundles and $6.25 price point adopted by the Guitar Hero franchise's downloadable content, and is giving gamers a bit of a break.
Rock Band will still feature pre-selected three-song packs for download, but they will instead cost $5.49 (440 Microsoft points on Xbox 360). Songs will also be available individually for $1.99. Harmonix has said future songs will be sold individually for as little as $.99 (80 Microsoft points), and as much as $2.99 (240 points). However, "the vast majority" will come in at the standard $1.99 price point. The developer did not say how much full-album downloads would be, or when the first albums would be released.
Harmonix also detailed its release schedule for the first five weeks after Rock Band launches. The opening week will be highlighted by track packs from Metallica, The Police, and Queens of the Stone Age, with individual songs from Creedence Clearwater Revival, Foreigner, T-Rex, and more. Downloaded tracks will be integrated into all of the game's modes, and will be playable online only if all players have purchased the songs.

Why do you lie to us? "It'll take your breath away -- in a good way"? I don't think $1.99 a song, or $5.29 a 3 Track Pack does it for me. I did the math for the launch. $28.41 for PS3, which translates to 2280 MPs. That's only 15 songs. Talk about making up the difference for a loss. By the way, with the pricing for MPs, that goes for $28.50 for 360 users, 9 cents more. That doesn't seem like a lot now, but it will add up.

Harmonix busted ass to give us awesome pricing. $2 per song with discounted packs is, indeed, awesome, considering the depth included in each song - as Alex R said in his interview, for each song they have to include three note charts, a vocal line, lipsynching for the singer, accurate movements for the rest of the band, lighting and effects, and mixing to insure that each part is properly audible.
If you don't think that's worth two bucks, fine. I think you're nuts.

Agreed, nobody's forcing you to buy the DLC. I was somewhat expecting either equal pricing with GH3, or slightly cheaper. When you add ala-carte downloads, it's suddenly quite a bit cheaper for a lot more content.
I will agree that it didn't take my breath away, but that's because I was expecting something like this, and already had high expectations. I expect the rest of the gaming world is s***ing a brick right now, especially compared to GH3.
But again, if it's not worth $2 to you, I understand your disappointment.

If it is a good song I may pay $1.50
$1.99 is too much for a song that can only be heard while playing a game
you're paying for game content, not the song.

If you wanted to just simply listen to the song and not play it, you could get it on iTunes for $0.99.
You are paying for content here, most single songs are going to cost you $2, which I see as more than reasonable, especially since packs and albums of songs will end up costing you even less than that per song!

I wonder what "vast majority at $2" will turn out to mean in practice (did they mean plurality?). I just have a funny feeling nearly every song in the $3 range will be a "must own."
I also really hope they get Who's Next and Nevermind on there before the end of the year, as that was the DLC that I was looking forward to the most. As for what is there, The Police pack looks great, but the Metallica and Punk packs are anemic. Too bad all the Sabbath stuff is covers, but it'll still be fun. Otherwise, it's way better than GH3's DLC, but still pretty meh from a "great rock songs" perspective (for now).
Overall, though, I'm pleased. It's expensive, but not if you only get a song or two once in a while, which I bet is how most people (as in, casual players who aren't obsessive and don't frequent boards like this) will approach it. I mean, what price would you really pay for [insert favorite song of all time]? They could've charged more, and didn't.

According to IGN http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/835/835522p1.html there won't be any albums till 08.

This is great news. They have to do 4 tracks a song, they have more (and bigger) DLC and they STILL undercut GH. Red Octane PRs should be crying in a corner right now.
Not OMG, t3h uber cheapz, but a decent difference when you start getting more.
This means that when I get RB on Tuesday, if I get a 1600 point card, I can download all 3 packs, and Joker and the Thief. Awesome.
And the best part is, I have points leftover, so when I get another point card, I get another song besides what I would get from just one card.
Very pleasing news.
BTW, I'm guessing that:
$0.99 songs are Harmonix bands, and/or indie songs.
$1.99 songs are the average bunch
$2.99 songs are the super hard and/or expensive to liscense songs (say if Harmonix potentially got ACDC, Led Zeppelin, or The Beatles, they would probably be this price)

I just hope the DLC interface is more friendly than guitar hero 3's. although alot of game developers could care less how they get dlc to you, i hope rock band provides somthing over the top ( like a shopping cart that could tally discounts {make your own 3 song pack?})and being able to preview a song before download. if their are user ratings for songs, i'm selling gh3 asap
i'll keep dreaming...

Sorry, I didn't read ALL 11 pages:
Will PS3 users be able to share their DLC and play with the person they share it with online? As you know PS3 users are able to DL games to their friends Play Station, by using their account and Password (it doesn't share the Credit info or anything).
Regardless, I would want to to find 5 people and share the content(and cost), whether or not it's my buddies I actually play with or not would depend on the above question.

From the article:
"Downloaded tracks will be integrated into all of the game's modes, and will be playable online only if all players have purchased the songs."
So no.

Wikipedia has a great little MSP ==> $$ converter with all different countries at the rock band entry in it.
The price is fair. Whining about .50c or whatever your fair price may be is ridiculous. im no rich man, but ill tell you that i work for a living and am willing to make a couple sacrifices to get what i want. that is what life is about, young ones. and besides, the DLC is not offered only for the period between its release and the release of the next one. im sure theres gonna be "dry" releases of stuff you would classify as pure crap and would therefore be able to catch up on your DLC. big deal. you dont have to be the first kid on the block with it all. youre obviously not that kid anyway, no need to stress yourself trying.
the point? i really dont care whether youre colored unimpressed or outraged at the price. you dont have the discretionary income (any income other than allowance?) working people have. stay home one night instead of going out spending money on whatever it is you spend it on. this thirtysomething father of two and his family are going to rock together. so maybe i have to cancel one of my two mmorpg subscriptions... i wont be playing them as much now anyway as of tuesday. rock band will be the new mmo for me. and it kind of is, isnt it?

If you can purchase songs from packs individually, does it work vice versa? Like, can you select 3 songs and count it as a 3-song pack?

This is the thing I don't understand about people and DLC. When people request something, others shoot it down because they don't like it. The reason it's DLC is because it's an OPTION to buy it. If you don't want to play it, don't buy it. Don't shoot down other's likes because you don't like them. Honestly, people, learn some respect for opinions here.

Yeah - but there's only so many hours of programming that'll go into it, ultimately - when there's hundreds of thousands of better bands, why waste time on bland-rock?

With DLC due to be available within 24 hours, this thread is no longer necessary as a sticky. Farewell DLC pricing stickies, we knew ye well.
