My 7 year old daughter has started taking an interest in playing the drums and I'm thinking about starting her off with Rock Band (woo hoo another band member for BWT :D )

The only thing that worries me is I don't think she's going to be able to handle the bass pedal and the pads at the same time.

Will there be a way to set up the drums the same way as the demo sets were with the auto bass pedal so she can concentrate on just hitting the pads?

no auto play
BUT
you can adjust the height of the drumpads

you can also remove the drumpads from the legs to place on a table and such. so you could place them on a "kids size" table and she should be able to reach the foot pedal fine.

Oh well it was a nice thought.

I can just see the tantrums now when she has problems co-ordinating her hands and feet :(

Here's hoping the opening teir on easy is forgiving.

They should make easy not need the foot pedal since its orange (kinda like easy on GH didn't use the orange fret).

Yeah but from what I have seen of the easy levels, it's umm...pretty easy. She will just have to work her way up...Just like a real drummer.

Although I primarily teach students in a marching or symphonic percussion context, I've worked with quite a few kids on set and among those have been kids your daughter's age.

You'd actually be surprised how quick they can pick things up, especially in the context of a game--I have no doubt she'll be able to handle Easy just fine almost out of the box.

The only thing I would say is if she takes a genuine interest in drums, after playing the game for a while, to try to get her some private instruction. Bad habits are hard to break, and having someone reinforce fundamentals like grip, stoke, and rebound from an early age really give them a headstart later on (where RB will give her a headstart in coordination and limb independence).

I think she'd be able to do it if you started her on easy.

For me, I learned a bit of independent dexterity from "air drumming" to Fleetwood Mac songs. Sounds gh3y, but they generally have a steady ride and allow you to focus on getting your foot and your hands working seperately.

Beat me to the punch. REAL LESSONS on REAL DRUMS... the only way to go. Don't let bad habits form.
