It is a neat idea, but I think it would get a little boring playing the same era of music then moving onto the next, then the next. Well not boring, but the setlist wouldn't be at its maximum potential. Also they generally have it get harder as you go on. Music from the 60's to now hasn't gotten harder to play, its all mixed up.

In Devil May Cry 3 you can get a guitar weapon and you play solos and stuff that make the enemies explode. It's pretty sweet. You could mix that concept with the Bill and Ted one, so you're fighting through time and when enemies appear on the screen a song/riff starts playing. The fret board comes down and you play the song, and the better you play the more damage you do. Easier/fewer enemies would be easy songs, and then at the end of the level you get to the boss who could be guarding the time machine, and you have to play a full, harder song to beat him. Once you beat him you hop into the time machine and travel to a different time and place, and repeat the process.

At the end of the game you go to the future where your exploits are studied in every school across the world and you are viewed as a savior to mankind. The last level is a huge concert where you play some ridiculous song and you play so hard that you kill everyone in attendance, thus making you an even bigger legend to the people on Earth that survived.
