View Full Version : Stupid things that you have said/though (music related)

This thread is a potential fail, but I figured it was worth a try.
Obviously the "stupid things you have heard from others (music related)" was a hit... so I thought I would try the opposite.
I highly doubt any of us can say that we have always had the same musical knowledge and same musical opinions. So, at any point of time, from kindergarden to last year, what are some of the dumbest things you have ever said or thought about music?
I predict a lot of "I used to think *insert band here* was good". Feel free to use those, though it would probably be better to avoid them, at the risk of offending someone else.
Anyway, here are some of mine.
- Vocal ability is based on how loud your screaming and how incoherent your vocals are.
- Linkin Parks "One Step Closer" is the heaviest song ever written.
- Thinking that Metallica's only songs worth checking out were Enter Sandman and Sad but True (they were most popular on itunes).
- That a song over 4 minutes is long
- That the Beatles wrote The Who's "I can see for Miles".
- Distortion automatically equals awesome.
- A songs "badassness" was measured by the number of times the word "f*ck" is uttered.
I'm sure I have more, but for now, that will do. Think you can top me?
EDIT: Ah, I misspelled "thought" in my title... luckily it isn't music related.

I once said Bozzio was in King Crimson, and I have no idea why....
It took me forever to realize when I heard the song, it was Boston (Foreplay/Long Time) I knew who it was, but it just wouldn't click right away

-Joey Jordison is the most talented drummer there is
-Atreyu is death metal
-classic rock drummers can't play more than a simple rock beat
-a musician's talent is shown by how catchy he can make his songs.

-Emo is death metal.
-Slipknot is one of the heaviest bands ever.
-The cover of "The Trooper" in Guitar Hero II is superior to the original.
-Frank Zappa is obscure (he kind of is here in Vermont).
-Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are hair metal.
-Lamb of God is death metal.
-The only good Deep Purple song is "Smoke on the Water" (I didn't even know any other songs of theirs).
-Buckethead is extreme metal.
-Metalheads are crazy, Satanic low-lifes.

I wouldn't say this is stupid. It's really not a stretch at all to compare(or refer to) the Burn The Priest era songs and some of the New American Gospel tracks to death metal.
Unless you buy into those silly super-specific genre labels, that is.

As a child, each time my father would put some of his cds on, I'd keep saying it was music for crazy people. Actually, it was mostly Pink Floyd.
I used to think that I was the center of the universe. The link with music is that Evanescence lead me to think that lol.
I used to think that Page looked weird on stage. Then I saw Bowie, Iggy Pop, Genesis, etc.
I have a couple of Linkin Park songs in my older home-made cds.

Way way WAAAAAAY back I thought that Metallica was a Rock Band, and not a Metal band, back when I only heard stuff off of the Black album.
Other failures include...
-Metal MUST include the vocalist growling.
-Metallica always played light songs like on the Black album
-Smoke on the Water isn't Metal
-Dragonforce is the best band ever.
-Buckethead is the greatest guitarist alive.
-Dethklok is awesome.
-Aside from Smoke on the Water, Deep Purple is very, very light. (first album I got from them was Shades of Deep Purple)
-GH2's version of Woman is better than Wolfmother's version.
-Rock Bands Rush covers aren't that bad.
-Guitar Hero's Megadeth covers aren't that bad.
There's so much more, but I locked most of it in the vault.

1)Sometimes.
2) They always do play light songs.......when the song is over.
3)Smoke On The Water isn't that metal.
4)Buckethead is the greatest guitarist alive. All the good ones are dead already. hahahahaha. Awww, I made myself sad.:(
5)DETHKLOK IS AWESOME!!!WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?!?!?!?!
6)At first I thought it was Wolfmother, until I heard the original. The cover band did do a good job.
7)Well at least they got Neil's drums down right.
8)They're not that bad, I've heard worse.

I used to agree with everything music critics said, particularly Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. Thankfully, I've gotten past that phase, to the point where I hate both Rolling Stone and especially Pitchfork. I still read the special edition lists that Rolling Stone makes from time to time though. I don't agree with most of it, of course.
I also used to think that all metal was in roughly the same league as modern pop-rap. It's not my favorite genre now, I certainly don't think that.

I used to say that all music that had male singers that sang high pitched sucked. Which was really dumb considering that I said AC/DC and Led Zeppelin were teh best bands evar! I remember telling my dad that Boston sucked because their singer sounded like a girl. I was very ignorant in my middle school years.

I once said that "Don't Fear The Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult was "Maps" by The Who (It's by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in case you've forgotten). It was like cut-and-paste for a song, the name, and the artist.
I've also asked whether Axl Rose or Jimi Hendrix was a better guitarist (and Axl isn't even a guitarist).

I once said that all In Flames songs sound the same
Luckily I'm no longer in middle school and think none of those things. Although the In Flames one is starting to reappear in my thoughts with their last couple CDs...
