I'm guessing 9.3 or 9.5. Maybe 9 because they sucked hard in the BotB contest and will take their frustration out by docking a few points.

Even if they did get owned in the BotB competition, I'm sure they had fun. I'm guessing a 9.5.

My favorite review site... I'm sure it'll be great they're suckers for it. Even if it was lower than expected I'm sure it'll be just as good as we imagined. Kane and Lynch got a low score and I thought all the flaws they pointed out didn't affect any of the gameplay.

9.5 seems like a solid estimate. They'll cite the shallow single-player experience and lack of online BWT as the primary negatives.

exactly. I'm guessing a score of 9.5-9.7 the IGN crew seemed to really love the game, calling it their most anticipated game of the year multiple times. GH2 got a 9.5 so RB will get AT LEAST a 9.5

It's pretty hard for games to break the 9.4 mark nowadays on IGN, so we'll see.

im praying they make a score higher than halo 3, but its unlikely.
ever since their halo review (score of 9.5) back in september, they haven't been able to give any game a higher score (i'm talking 360 reviews).

well Bioshock got a 9.7 lol
Halo 3 wasn't that good anyway, but I definitely see a 9.5 coming this way.

Bioshock was a masterpiece despite a crap ending, but it's a complete different league. I'm curious where they'll fit Rock Bands score into.

Yeah, I was just saying it got a 9.7 because the other poster said that Halo 3 had the highest recent score on the Xbox 360....and yeah the ending was crap, but it was still an excellent game lol.
9.5-9.7 range for Rock Band.

I think the REAL question is, what TIME will they post it. Remember their crappy halfed assed version of "RockBand Week" where there was only 4 days of info, and it was posted at like 8:30 or later at night? Hopefully they will be on the ball with the review but I wouldn't count on seeing it till later tomorrow night. It will be FRIDAY after all.

oh no, i didn't say halo 3 had the highest this year, I meant since the review for Halo 3, nothing has been higher. I was fully aware that bioshock was graded higher (and rightfully so).

I hope so. I don't see any way around this game being just perfect. If Halo 3 can get a perfect score (in some publications) for complete unoriginality, Rock Band should get an 11/10!
Honestly, though, the main complaints (lack of online BWT, no Bass solo) that were cited in the OXM review were plain trivial, in my opinion.

Rock Band
Get together with three friends to form the ultimate Rock Band. Does Harmonix's highly-anticipated music game live up to the hype?
Look for IGN's exclusive review at 6PM PST on Friday, November 16.

if they do penalize the score for some idotic reason like "no BWT online" i'll punch a baby.
Come on! Everyone needs to stop *****ing that they can't play with some 12 year old from Sweden on career and instead realize every other aspect of the game overshadows this minor fault.
Get some actual friends, a few brews, and play all night. That's a ****ing good time, better than across the country **** IMO.

Didn't they give Assassin's Creed like a 7? I'm waiting for the Game Informer review. Best wishes for the IGN review, but I'm guessing somewhere in the low 9's if GH3 got an 8.9. Doesn't matter to me. I know it's going to be great and I already have my reserve paid in full and am ready for Tuesday.

Well, while I don't believe that should stop it from getting 10/10, it would still be nice to have.
Sure having friends over is always better but with work/wife/girlfriend/etc, online or single player would be nice.
Still this game should get 10/10 because it's just that good, GHIII got 8.9, right ? With all that DLC, drums, mic, it has to get 9.9/10 or 10/10.

I'm going to say 9.5 max. That isn't to say it isn't perfect in my eyes, but the track list smaller than GH (even though there are 4 peripherals to chose to play for each song, also about 7 repeats from GH3) and lack of online BWT bring it down somewhat. Just the way the cards fold. If I'm wrong and it's higher I'll be seriously blown away.

11-15-2007, 02:49 PM
I'm going to say 9.5-10. Really, if GH2 deserves a 9.5, than RB deserves a 10. GH2 was just a superbly polished sequel with the same gameplay; Rock Band is something never before seen in the music gaming world.
Of course, I also thought Rock Band deserved a Game of the Year nomination from the people at Spike TV. Their nominations should have replaced Halo 3 and Bioshock with Super Mario Galaxy and Rock Band.

I really think this game might be the first game ever to receive a 10. Simply because the score is not an average of all the categories. It is an entirely independent score. We know the game won't get a 10 in graphics, but who cares. And plus it looks good enough. The gameplay should definaetely be a 10, the sound, without question should be a 10 and the replay value and multiplayer capabilities should be a 10 as well. Not to mention that this game is breaking new ground in ways we've not seen before. I think that if any game deserves a perfect score this is it. Of course, when we look back 10 years from now we'll have much better music games, but it will be traced back to this game. I haven't played the game yet (except at Best Buy) and I can already say that it will be the most FUN game I've ever played. I can't wait until Tuesday. I'm a teacher so I get out of school on Wed-Friday! And yes, I'm just as excited as my students, lol.

Nah - never means a thing with IGN. I remember them pimping the living bejeesus out of one of the last 007 games that came out - might have been "Goldeneye 2" or whatever that was called.
I even remember them saying in one of the preview columns that the fact they were paying so much attention to it should tell you how good the game was - then they trashed it (deservedly).
Same thing with "Assassin's Creed" - Launch Center's, detailed Hands On's, the dynamics of, the making of - all of that, and then they gave it what I bebelive is the lowest rating out of all the major sites by a fair majority.
"Rock Band" of course, will be the exception.

11-15-2007, 03:56 PM
The problem with ratings that go to 10 and have 0.1 decimal points is that they're basically worthless. How much more fun is a 9.3 from a 9.4? How do you measure that? Also, inevitably just about everything of quality gets a 9.Something. Nothing drops below 7 unless it's absolutely hideous, when 5 really should be the average... etc.
In short, numbers are pointless. What matters more is what the review SAYS. So, I'll try predicting that.
IGN will LIKE...
* Amazing and deep BWT mode
* Create-a-character, create-a-band, etc.
* Various competitive gametypes like tug-of-war
* Being able to play two brand new instruments
IGN will DISLIKE...
* Rehashed, shallow single player experience with little customizability
* Inability to play the true game mode, BWT, online
* Some note about Setlist / Difficulty not meeting their hopes
And it won't get a 10, because while Rock Band is VERY VERY GOOD, bordering on AMAZING... it's not PERFECT. There's obvious areas that could use improvement via patches or sequels.
There's no such thing as a perfect game. Orange Box rehashes old content and TF2 was (is still?) buggy on XBL. Bioshock has a weak ending and slopes away sharply after the Big Twist. Halo 3's single player campaign could stand some improvement. Etc, etc, etc.
And that's fine! That's absolutely fine! A game can be very, very good without being perfect. I'm going to enjoy the hell out of Rock Band DESPITE its flaws, and I'm sure everybody else will do.

I think this shows how bored we are waiting for the game, that a thread about the IGN review has already gotten 40+ posts. So I'll add another, and say 9.4.
Sometimes I feel like a site will give a low score, just to pat themselves on the back, as if they are a true video game expert, and don't fall for hype (think AC, over the past few days), even if its over nitpicky crap. That being said, I don't think RB is the kind of game you can do that with, because instead of trying to look cool, you'd risk end up looking like an idiot, because this isn't really a "game".

Before the Battle of the Bands competition: 9.6/9.7.
Their bitter response to losing badly in said competition: 9.2/9.3.
lol
Seriously though, I stopped caring about IGN's game ratings years and years ago. They need to overhaul the system very soon. Every time I see a random 6.2, 7.4, or 4.3, I'm increasingly convinced that having that many numbers in a rating system is completely pointless. HeXcoda was right on the money earlier with these scores meaning next to nothing in this 0.1 interval system.
Whether it turns out to be a 9.1 or 9.8, don't get too caught up in the number. It's just a number after all. We all already know how great this game is going to be. A 9.anything isn't going to change that.

I don't know how many times I have to say this... these are not huge, gaping, terrible faults. I'm not HAPPY about them, I WISH they were different, and I know some reviewers are going to agree... but that won't stop Rock Band from getting a much deserved 9+ score. It will stop it from getting a 10. And that's absolutely okay.
What do I have to do to satisfy you? Sing endless praises? How much praise must I couch my ONE COMPLAINT in in order to convince you I'm happy with the game? If you can't accept the simple fact that the single player offering is not as robust as BWT, you're gonna have a fun time reading the upcoming reviews of the game...

I don't want toi start an "Internet Argument" here but I think what he said defines it perfectly. BWT is the true game mode. It's what this is all about. And the single player mode is pretty shallow, play song, rinse, repeat.
Besides, he was simply stating what IGN will say in their review. And that's most certainly the points they'll hit on.

I don't know. giving it less than GH2 doesn't make any sense, and in my opinion would totally trash their credibility.
unless there's some giant problem with the game we all don't know about, which I seriously doubt.

11-16-2007, 05:36 AM
I'll venture a guess at 9.6. I can also see them considering the lack of online BWT a negative and docking a few points off of the score because of that. I say this because in their review of Shadowrun, they gave it a 6.8 and trashed it because it didn't have a single player campaign, even though the game was built as a multiplayer game only. That was quite the wtf moment.
So I wouldn't put it past them to cite that as reason to lower the score. I don't usually agree with IGN because they seem biased and sometimes contradicting, I tend to like OXM reviews more so we'll see how good of a read the IGN review is.

True, but I also assume that this will be a negative for most reviews. I doubt it will be a big negative, but almost every preview mentions it. He also didn't take a dig at it. If you are seriously bothered by that, you're looking for something to be bothered by.
@Hex: Don't worry about it, man. Totally acceptable time to mention it.

IGN gave like a 7.5 to Assassin's Creed and criticized it for the same exact things they said GTA: San Andreas earned a 10 for.
I go to Game Informer for my reviews. IGN for the previews.

I'm not too bothered by it, Ive just noticed popping up here and there and I'm sure people will criticise that aspect of the game, if anyone else had said I doubt anyone would've picked up on it, but it's almost like it's gotten to the stage if you say "Hey Hex, what time is it?" the inevitable response will be "It's time single-player wasn't a glorified practice mode". I'd like a bit more single player depth myself, and I know hex isn't bashing the game as a whole based on that one fact (like other people have done because of one song, or lack of... etc. etc.) I was responding to a post above mine relating to Hex's post, trying to put a frame on why some people are starting to get uppity about it. If that makes sense, I'm really not trying to flame Hex.

I know, I was kinda responding to both of you. I intended to be building off of what you said.
I'm just saying that in this context (possible negative comments about RB from reviewers) almost EVERYONE will be saying BWT local only is a negative. Nobody deserves to get uppity just because Hex said it.
Remember, this is coming from the guy who posted a pic of a guy beating a dead horse in response to Hex yesterday. ;)

Lol, indeed, I think we should be thankful that the game isn't perfect, because then, well there'd be a lot of people completely disappearing from society, they're only contact with the outside world being with their bandmates online, who would no doubt be in a similar predicament.

Creepy. Reminds me of a Neil Gaiman story where everybody's so addicted to some little puzzle game that eventually they stop going out to get food, and eventually die of thirst and starvation with "the game" playing in their head long after the power went out...
For the sake of humanity's survival, Rock Band must score a 9.9!

Let's not forget that price might be an issue that hurts the score. I'm not saying that $170 isn't a good deal, because I personally think it is. At the same time, I can see how some people will see it as too much to invest in one game, and might dock points accordingly.

Yeah, but if you do that, you need to already own a guitar, already own some random USB microphone, and as for the drums... no joy. What's more, if you DO want to buy these things separately down the road it'll cost MORE than the bundle. So I don't think that option's going to cushion the blow for any reviewers who take umbrage with the price.
Personally, I don't care about the price. The game'd be worth it even if it was the originally suspected $200... but I don't run a game review site.

Well yeah, but last weeks' performance was terrible....He's on my fantasy team :(.
Roethlisberger FTW!
And Tom Brady isn't a nice guy. He seems like one because he acts like it when he's on TV, but there have been reports about him saying rude comments and being disrespectful to other players. I do not like his on-field attitude either, like how he brags and talks crap.
But lets get back to the topic here. That review is definitely fake because of the statement that it was boring after an hour of playing music. Wtf? lol. Guitar Hero 1 and 2 had music in it too and this game has much more to it than any Guitar Hero game lol.

I'll agree to that but you got to remember the rest of the colts team are a bunch of women and aren't playing, 3 WR, etc, etc, etc. Ears, necks, knees, arms are just screwed up for the colts.
Oh yes, Rock band. I think the only thing that could hurt Rock band is the fact of BWT is not single player/online, that's the only thing. The game isn't a cakewalk, etc, etc.

Yeah, between that and the drums are the only fun solo part, I don't know if this game will score over 8.9 or not. That's be really damn stupid if it didn't though.
His flaws wasn't even no single player BWT/online, it was that the guitar sucked and guitar solo sucked, fear of change I'm thinking.

Quote that invalidates the review:
"Even the singing, singing alone...it's just not as developed as Singstar or Karaoke Revolution"
Did I miss the phoneme detector in Singstar and Karaoke Revolution, or the freeform sections, or the overdrive system? The singing is identical to Karaoke Revolution plus those additional elements. Clearly, the reviewer doesn't know his music games.

Things to point out here since the score isn't up, and it doesn't sound too enthusiastic:
Points out track list repeats itself too much due to short list.
Don't bother with solo career unless you're doing drums.
Guitar itself is mediocre at best (though from what I tried at Best Buy I liked, but that's me)
Difficulty is too easy for guitar compared to Guitar Hero.
Life span depends on DLC.

honestly from what i've seen recently, especially in the video review, the difficulty for non dlc (for the most part) looks fine, I just want to keep busy and a lot of the songs look like they do at least that, with runs and neat chord changes. as long as my fingers keep moving I'm cool.
although, I do want to see some impossibles go up on DLC.

I suppose because BWT is different than GH. It has the part of it where fans randomly pick a song for you to play, sometimes repeats that get old.

Damn right they are
The meat of Rock Band is the unbelievably cool Band World Tour. The BWT requires at least two players with AI filling in any missing roles. Though currently only available locally, BWT will get a patch to allow for an online career mode at some point in the near future.
No maybe, no hope. Just will get a patch.
9.4, a damn good score.

Wow, I didn't think the foot pedal would be the thing to break on the drums.
Of course this is the first I've heard of one breaking so maybe it was a fluke.

Yeah, I just hope a couple months from now the pedal doesn't break. Other than that, this review entirely sold me on my already completely paid off pre-order. I'm off to bed now, hope this cheered many up!

This confused me:
"I will say that the transition from medium to hard seems like a big leap. Not only do you add the dreaded kick pedal (getting my foot and hands to do something completely different from one another proved to be a Zen experience where I had to turn off my brain and become one with the drum set), but you'll also be hitting two pads at once on several occasions, sometimes in conjunction with the kick pedal."
I played Easy and Medium at the tour that came through, and Medium again recently at a Best Buy demo. They all had kick pedal usage (although the demo auto-hit it) and had instances of striking two notes at once. Is there any indication that charting was changed between the demo and actual game? Because it doesn't seem at all like you have to go to hard for that pedal.
