is the 360 reaching the peak of its technical capabilities??

found an interesting story with comments from a leading developer (Epic) on 360 games saying, "I think we're certainly approaching the upper end of it, as far as what developers are able to do". does make one think how long this generation of platforms will reign.

so how long till the new xbox comes out and will it have rock band exclusivity as well? lol

They probably are reaching the limits of what the hardware can do, it's been out for almost 3 years now. But I think they can release games at the current level for the next couple of years without any real issues.

I wouldn't expect a new console for about 2 years yet.

I don't think we are going to see any real new consoles for some time. We might get a Blu-Ray attachment for the 360 at some point, or we might get new versions of the same consoles, but as for brand new consoles with new capabilities, I just don't see it happening.

Even if the 360 is reaching its peak, isn't it reassuring to know that some games (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/destroyallhumanspathofthefuron/index.html) will continue to stagnate and not even try to push its boundaries further? :)

i personally think MGS4 is about as good as graphics will get for the ps3

MGS4 puts out a low resolution though. It isn't even 1080p. If I remember correctly, it natively puts out 700p or around there. There are PS3 games with better graphics.

EDIT- i haven't seen any ps3 games with better visuals. then again fallout 3 isnt here yet

The PlayStation 2 is in its eighth year with games still being made for it. The original Xbox was only out for four years before the 360 came out and was discontinued a year later. Expect a new Xbox to be announced by E3.

some of the best graphics for the ps3 came via ratchet & clank game and the developers for that game said they only tapped into about 30% of the capabilities. i would find the article but am too damm lazy lol mgs4 while it looks amazing, i think a game will come out that will look even better. (resistance 2 maybe?)

I like to hold judgement on when they reached the limit of the system until the system itself is dead.

I mean I thought the PS2 was looking crappy early on.(Well it always did. hahaha) but God Of War, 2, and Resident Evil 4 came out to prove the system still had some jugo to be squeezed out.

5 years is the max for a modern console. ( microsoft )
I did say that the playstation was the exception to the rule. ( Yea there are still people making games based on PS1 tecnology ) Microsoft on the other hand decides to abandon the origional XB to force development on the 360 and have had more time to reach hardware limits. PS3 has blueray on its side this time and will continue to be developed for a long time. However dont expect microsoft to sit by and let that go for long. Either with a new console, or with an external BD to read games from. It will happen. and the 360 has the power to do it. Now if a could just talk the gang over at MS to let me use an external hard drive, now that would be great. Having a external 1 tB hard drive .....SIC.

The recent price drop suggests to me that a discontinuation is closing it. It's the usual MS tactic as I've seen with their software and peripherals... so I get that feeling.

I doubt the reason for the drop was due to slumping 360 sales because even its previous price it was still more reachable than that of the PS3.

I wonder if Gamestop will take a pre-order on the xBox 720... :D

I doubt the 360 has reached "the peak" yet. The reason games get better looking as a system ages is because developers discover ways to improve code in order to basically cheat the system into doing what it is not intended to do. For instance, with the NES, which lasted for anywhere between 7 and 12 (or even 24 years) depending on who you ask, (The NES started 1983, SNES 1990, Stopped production 1995, stopped repairing 2007), at first created rather blocky games, and continued to eventually have games on par with early SNES games, (See difference between Super Mario Brothers,Super Mario Brothers 3, and Super Mario World). The 360 will continue to produce better and better looking games until its retirement (probably in 2011, imo).

Oh, and PC's are better than either. A good gaming computer has more power than either the 360 or the PS3. There is a reason Crysis isn't on a console yet... they have to redo the code so that the consoles can actually run it with their technical limitations.

this is true on the graphics but i dont think MS can hold their wad for 4 yrs w/o talk of a new system. or sony & nintendo. IMO nintendo will be the 1st to announce a new system as the wii is not capable of putting out epic games like gears, mgs4 etc.

on another topic on the wii, does anybody else think the success of the wii caught nintendo by surprise? what i mean is the system has certain limitations (no hdd, graphical, console shortages etc). had they anticipated the boom in sales i imagine they would've made the wii a true 'next-gen' system instead of a gamecube w/wands. right??:confused:

no and the article in question simple says that with their engine, they are getting close. He goes on to say it still has several years of milking power out of it, but they, being Epic, feel they're getting close.

It's not hard to accept though, it's been out a few years. I hope they release the next one in two years. If it weren't for ps3 being so hard to pull top performance out of, it would be at the same point in only its second year.

and Bass182, your right to a certain extent, but do you honestly think that as consoles become closer to PCs that devs ARENT going to pour heavy resources into graphics? im pretty sure the ultimate goal in games is to create interactive worlds that evoke attachment to the property. its much easier for me to connect to the characters/plot of FFX as opposed to FF4

i dont think you're way off line with this comment, graphics aren't the most important thing in a game I'll agree with ya there, but they do matter. if they didn't we would all still be playing on our SNES :p. or genesis for the sega fans out there lol
