For those of you lucky enough to know who Alan Cross is, you will know what I am talking about. I am sure my fellow Canadians will attest to how awesome his radio show is.
Alan Cross is a Canadian Dj and music historian who works for a rock radio station Toronto called The Edge 102.1 He has, for as long as I can remember, done these weekly syndicated radio programs called the "The Ongoing History of New Music", it plays every Sunday here in Ottawa.
As I was browsing these forums I thought I would Google Alan Cross to see if I could buy his very informative and intelligent history of music. I figured he might have a boxset available. However, what I found was over 10 years of his radio shows all for free and ready to be streamed to your computer for listening.
How %$#@ing awesome is that.
Absolutely %$#@ing brilliant stuff. For example, did you know that grundge and the Seattle scene has punk roots and influences? Green River, was the first offical grundge band and had members who directly influenced the gundge scene. The Seattle bylaw called the teen dance ordinance which banned all-ages shows that forced only the good bands around that area to survive, well sorta, he explains it in his broadcasts.
If I ever share another thing worthwhile on these forums I doubt it will top this gem. Enjoy, this has something for everyone from metal head to punk to Link Park fanboi. ;)

Start with the history of Grunge, you will see. I'm sort of a history buff so I really like this type of stuff.
Always wondered how Temple of the Dog formed.

Being a lifelong resident of the general Toronto area I grew up listening to his show. It's the best. Even if he's talking about a band or genre i don't enjoy I would still listen as it's meticulously researched and so well put together. Always informative and entertaining. Cool to see him get some props here.

Being a California boy -- didn't know Alan Cross. Decided to check this out -- starting with the stuff on "Plagiarism and Unfortunate Sonic Coincidences." Just starting out but I like how he does this.
Thanks, Cassiuss, looks like this will be an excellent contribution :D

Weird, I thought for sure more people would be interested in this stuff. Aren't people in general music fans and want to know more about their favourite bands or genres?
Last bump I guess. : /

I'll check this out when I get some free time. If we get enough people to listen we could start having weekly discussions on some of his topics.

When I lived in T.O. I used to listen to Alan's show religiously. Now that I live in a small city on the east coast, i still try to catch it on the web whenever I can..
Alan's forgotten more about music than most people know....;)
Worth every minute for ANY music fan....I love the "EMO" show...

I loved the 4-part show on radiohead...also the history of the mp3 is soo interesting. if one guy had patented it everything we know now would have been completely different.

Well I went to high school during the Grunge era, there are a ton of shows on grunge and bands of that time. I also like the show on tool and all the facts about the drummer who aligns his kits with satanic or occult purpose.
Tons of awesome shows.
He explains in his faq that he is legally allowed to to publish his shows via streaming as it doesn't infringe copyright laws and that he cant sell his shows because of the massive amount of legalities.
Too bad, Id buy all of it in a second...
