Fans of classical music and jazz are creative, pop lovers are hardworking and, despite the stereotypes, heavy metal listeners are gentle, creative types who are at ease with themselves.
So says Professor Adrian North of Scotland's Heriot-Watt University who has been studying the links between people's personalities and their choice of music.
"People often define their sense of identity through their musical taste, wearing particular clothes, going to certain pubs, and using certain types of slang," North said.
"It's not surprising that personality should also be related to musical preference."
In what North said was the largest study ever conducted into individuals' musical preference and character, researchers asked 36,518 people from around the world to rate how much they liked 104 different musical styles before taking a personality test.
"Researchers have been showing for decades that fans of rock and rap are rebellious, and that fans of opera are wealthy and well-educated," North said.
"But this is the first time that research has shown that personality links to liking for a wide range of musical styles."
The study concluded that jazz and classical music fans are creative with good self-esteem, although the former are much more outgoing whereas the latter are shy.
Country and western fans were found to be hardworking and shy; rap fans are outgoing and indie lovers lack self-esteem and are not very gentle.
Those who like soul music can take heart as the research concluded they are creative, outgoing, gentle, at ease with themselves and have a high self-esteem.
And if you've ever wondered why people driving expensive sports cars often have music blaring from their vehicle, North could have an explanation.
Those who choose to listen to exciting, punchy music are more likely to be in a higher earning bracket, he says, while those who go for relaxing sounds tend to be lower down the pay scale.
North is still looking for volunteers to take part in the research. Details on http://www.peopleintomusic.com/

Well, as I've said before in other threads, since I've become a metalhead, people have remarked to me that I've become a much happier and nicer person without knowing my musical preferences.
Metalheads definitely have respect for each other. Just look at concerts. You can go up and talk to other metalheads like friends, people respect each other in the pit and pick each other up as well as return dropped possessions, few people are unwilling to help you crowd surf, etc...

I thought your idea for a new thread topic was gonna be lesser known Canadian party bands...(haha). After reading, I'm going back and thinking about all the people I know and their music tastes to see if it applies. For the most part I think it's pretty accurate but you always have people that don't fit into a certain mold.
I used to do that when I was d.j.'ing. Scan the room and base what I needed to play by people's appearance. Younger crowd I'd stay with current, mainstream music. If it was an older crowd I'd dig into the 60's and 70's stuff. (I wasn't always right....lol).
Edit: I think I need to start listening to more exciting, punchy music so I can be in the higher paying bracket.

Read about it on Metal Underground.
I find it funny, really. Everyone assumes I'm a hardcore drug-abusing Satanist. I can now just tell them I'm a gentle and creative-type person.

That's awesome! Now I'm going to gently express my creativity by listening to some nice old Carcass discs!
This Professor North guy is officially cool in my book!

Finally a good, unbiased study. It's true. When I went to my first Maiden show, every single person there was approachable, kind, and the atmosphere before and after the show was amazing. Everyone was so nice and it really made me feel at home. The music is aggressive, but the people who listen to it aren't.

So I'm a creative, gentle yet not gentle, and rebellious guy that lacks self-esteem? o_O
Also, another test taken stated that Metal fans are most likely to kill themselves. :|

take slipknot fans out of that test and it becomes the complete opposite.

People who aren't very happy I think listen to metal. However, once they get into the music, it makes them happier. As opposed to listening to sad, melancholy songs about how some dudes girlfriend left him, the songs are about all kinds of other stuff, and it allows people to forget about their issues and in that moment, nothing else matters. Introduce the sense of community that metalheads have and it makes everyone happy.
The only thing that can bring true happiness is human connection, and music is one of the best building blocks for it. Since metal has stayed so underground all these years, the fans really identify with each other and it's almost like we're all from the same town, but it's spread throughout the whole world. It's difficult to describe. I'm sure someone else can put it better for me.

I think this makes a lot of sense, actually. You may think to yourself, "Why would someone so gentle listen to such aggressive music?" I think the answer is that because of their gentle and caring nature, it's hard to actually be aggressive at anything without feeling bad over those that they might harm. Thus, they turn to music and other forms of harmless entertainment to spill out some of their aggression.
My question is: Where do Rush fans fall into all of that?

You ended your url code one character too soon. Also, I'm not sure I agree with half of that stuff, since I hardly understand what's being said in that article anyway.
