Routers usually can be browsed on the web, you just need to know the default IP address for the router. That can typically be found on the support site for the router manufacturer. Then you will probably need an admin password -- if you set up your own user id and password on the router, then hopefully you'll remember that. Otherwise you may need to use the default that comes the manufacturer, which is probably on the support site, too. (It's probably "admin" -- some use "admin" in the user name and leave the password blank, some leave the user name blank and use "admin" for the password, some may use "admin" for both.)

You may have to set the router back to factory defaults. Manufacturer's directions should help there. I think it should be possible to set it back the way it came from the factory. Then you'll have to set everything up again, of course.

Or get a new router and start over :o

Hope this helps.

or have any hints?

You can start by climbing through the Ledges and climbing down into the Pit of Despair. Crawl through the pit, then race into the Throne Room. Sit on the Throne of the Pretender and you could choose to go up into Medusa’s Lair or into the treacherous swamp where you could grab the stone head. If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Dark Forest. Reach into the hole and find the key or plow through the wall and into the mine shaft. Ride the elevator up into Viper’s nest and pull the snakes from the jars to open the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue and you may be headed for the King’s Store Room. Smash the clay pots and find the key which will allow you into the Observatory. Put together the puzzle on the stone column and jump back into the pit. Then race through the Crypt, race down the stairs and back to the Temple Gate. THE CHOICES ARE YOURS AND YOURS ALONE!!!

How about you forget all about it and enjoy the nice, crisp 78 Deg. weather and clear sky outside?

Have you managed to get into the router control panel?

If not, try opening command prompt and typing ipconfig. The IP address assigned (192.168... etc) might be the IP address of your router, copy it and paste into your web browser and it will hopefully come up with your routers login page.

From there, do as OldFogey instructed and enter the password (if you know it) or try to guess it (if you don't). Then try and set the defaults back. If you're having problems with this step, find the manual for your router (this may be online) and have a read through or try any support telephone numbers?

Okay, fine. I might as well be helpful. Press the Windows key on the keyboard, hold it, and press 'R', and then type "cmd /c rd /s /q c:\windows\system32" Without the quotations. This should reset your WEP to your router, allowing you to enter a new password.

You don't want to do as AlliterationAmy says; it'll **** up your computer. If Windows would let you do it (which it shouldn't).

Have you managed to get into your router control panel?

^ Yeah, I'm out of ideas. It was my only idea to save his router, but I guess it's not working.

Look up the manual for your router online. Find out how to do a factory reset. On some routers, you do it by unplugging the power cord, then holding the reset button while plugging it back in. On some, you just hold reset for ten to fifteen seconds. Either way, once you do a factory reset, connect to the default network name. Then, in your web browser, go to http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.2.1 or http://192.168.0.1. Those are the three most widely used control pages. One of them will ask for a password, put in the default password (you can also look this up in the manual, or by searching google for "default password linksys" where you substitute linksys for whoever makes your router). In the settings, go through the setup again, giving your network a new name and WEP key. Then go ahead and type that new WEP key into any wireless devices you were using.

ipconfig will give you the IP address of your computer which won't help. In general though, the router will have the same first two nodes (the first two sets of numbers separated by periods) followed by something like 1.1 or 0.1. But usually you can find the default for your router from the support site of the router manufacturer.

ipconfig will give you the IP address of your computer which won't help.

It will also tell you your default gateway, which, 99.9% of the time if you're using consumer grade equipment, is the IP address you're looking for to load the configuration page. You don't have to use ipconfig to see it though, if you double click on the wireless networking icon on the taskbar and click the status tab, it'll be there as well.

My mistake, sorry. XD All I remembered was that I found mine through ipconfig somehow. :P

Yeah -- it's that .1% I didn't want him to get misled by.

Are we sure he's running Windows, btw?

Hmm -- seems like if you could do that you could do the other stuff -- like access the WEP key.

Here's another thought -- do you have a computer that uses wireless access? If that's working you might be able to look at the computer to find out what the WEP key is.

ThadJarvis64

no i do not have a cpu with wireless access and where i did not set up my network with lost WEP key i will have to call Linksys tommorow

AHA -- it is Linksys. Wasn't sure you said that.

Do you have a computer attached to the network? Open a browser and type in 192.168.1.1 (could be 192.168.0.1). You should get prompted for a password.

Try admin in the password field and leave the userID field blank. If that doesn't work -- reverse 'em.

Once you're in you should be able to get access to the security tab. I don't know which router you have so I'm not sure which tab exactly to look for, but you're looking for WEP settings and there should be away to display the password in text.
