"Sonic Titan" from the fourth side of Dopesmoker by Sleep has an amazing Matt Pike solo in it that is rarely heard in doom metal.

I'm not sure if you've actually heard the song, so here it is, in its full glory:

Solo starts at 7:54.

Awesome choice.

It's up on my Sleep compilation, too. That song is seriously underrated.

Very much so. I remember when I first heard it. I was just amazed that he could play that well. I mean, Jus Oborn has a few good solos in some Wizard songs, but I had never heard that kind of playing in a doom metal song.

I believe that the correct term is "Sweet fancy moses!"

I've always loved Matt Pike's guitar work, but it really does shine on that solo.

I need to get the Asbestosdeath demos and the Kalas album and do an entire Matt Pike discography run.

I don't own enough Matt Pike stuff. I've got one High on Fire album and two Sleep albums. I definitely should get the Asbestosdeath stuff, though. I'm sure it's online somewhere. I can't stand ordering CDs.

I've got every High on Fire album and all Sleep albums (minus Jerusalem since it really is just a shortened and separated form of Dopesmoker anyways). I would order the Kalas and Asbestosdeath, but I won't be here to receive them, knowing Amazon's deceptive shipping dates.

Well, I actually just found this (http://www.allthatisheavy.com/info.asp?item_num=ATH-4283) online. I'm looking at the website and they have an awesome collection of doom metal stuff. Whether it's reliable or not, however, is another story. It may just be a big scam.

OMG ELECTRIC WIZARD VINYL WITHOUT OVERSEA SHIPPING RATES!!!!!!

Please, please, please, be real.

The CD is valid enough. I've seen it sold on enough reliable stores. I've been meaning to get it, but just haven't been able to.

Well, I guess I should have expected you to know Om, since you happen to know a hell of a lot more bands than any of us, especially when it comes to doom and black metal-related things, but it's still awesome that you know them. They are pretty great. I own Pilgrimage and have heard several songs from the other albums.

I prefer High on Fire to Om. I just really like Matt Pike's Lemmy-ish vocals. They add another dimension to the music. Al Cisernos can pull off apocalyptic vocals very well ("Dopesmoker" is amazing), but I overall prefer Pike. I do like the bass-centric style of Om, however.

I advise looking over the rest of that site. There are actually tons of worthwhile products and it's pretty much all doom and stoner metal.

Oh, I am. They've got some awesome shirts there. I wish I would be here long enough to order some stuff from them. Ah well, hopefully I'll remember in 4 months.

Edit: Hot damn, they've got some Kongh and Ocean Chief stuff there, including the split vinyl (though I have it already).

Yeah, they even have a Sunn O))) shirt and some vinyl. Too bad I don't have the cash right now. :( Gotta save it for Rock Band 2.

I'm signing off now. My next post is my 3,000th!

Best live solo? Best I've seen is the one Prince ripped out at the George Harrisom Rock n Roll Hall of Fame dealie.

Oddly enough he did the best bass solo I've ever seen as well.

I would pick something from Shut Up 'N' Play Yer Guitar

Now which song, that's a hard one.

Although, Comfortably Numb is granted one of the best guitar solo's ever.

I've said this before, but my favourite live guitar solo is by David Gilmour. No it's not Comfortably Numb. It's One of these Days live from "The Delicate Sound of Thunder" in 1988.

Here it is for all of you who haven't heard it:

(The guitar comes in at 1:40 if you are really impatient and the main solo is around 3:30)

"Crossroads" by Cream. Eric Clapton cemented his status as a legend when he recorded that solo.

What's so cool about those solos (there are actually two, of course) is how they build. They have a beginning, middle and end. It's also cool how he starts a blues solo in the major pentatonic for the first verse in the first solo then switches to the minor pentatonic for the second verse.

Mick Taylor is another one I've long admired for his ability to "compose" a solo on the spot -- find a theme and then build a structure with introduction, exposition and development. Hard to pick one of his that's recorded to single out, but give a listen to his solo work on Sympathy for the Devil off of the Get Yer Ya Ya's Out album.

In the end I just can't say there's any live solo I know of that's the best. But this one has it all: killer tone, development of musical ideas, dynamics, pyrotechnics, multiple tones and effects (awesome use of wah), nary a cliche to be found, long musical phrases, use of extended modes and scales:

That's how you shred musically.

And did I mention he's just about the best rhythm player in blues, too? Check out the voice leading in those chord forms.

I love the live solo from Nummer 9 by Black Sabbath, although it basically just turns into a big jam session.
Can't find a video of it though :(

Definitely, I've never seen another live solo as good as that one. It was very mesmerizing, with the whole disco ball thing they did, as well as sounding amazing.
