Don't worry, you won't be betting your life's savings or mortgage...from 1up (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3164425):

Back in the early days of Xbox Live, one oft-mentioned feature that's fallen into disuse was the Spectator Mode, which would allow users to watch online games in action. Nintendo, meanwhile, playing catch-up with online services, most notably in Super Smash Bros Brawl. The game now has online play, save films and stage creation.

Now, Mario and his gang will be horning in on the online space once more, taking the audience participation idea and running with it. Announced today on Smash Bros DOJO, the new Spectator Mode will allow users to log on and watch random matches. No Friend Codes will be visible from the mode, so if you see someone you really like, you can't stalk them. On top of viewing matches, the game will let you bet coins before a match starts. More betters means a higher payout, and the site hints extra prizes may be awarded for especially competent gambling. And people say Nintendo is for kids.

Nintendo also notes that if you allow spectators, data will occasionally be sent to the company for data collection; maybe they want statistics on how many people play with Yoshi versus Donkey Kong? One has to wonder how Nintendo plans to tackle the logistical task that has plagued even internet-savvy Microsoft, but we'll all find out in February.
