View Full Version : The Sneaky way to get your DLC

So, I thought of the sneaky, dirty, underhanded way to get all the DLC you could want, for cheap.
Throw a RockBand party!
Think about it. Just read one of the threads on DLC on this board. Every post has the two or three songs (or one or two bands) that they're just ecstatic about, but usually they're wide and varied. Why? 'cause all the songs are good in their own way, and everybody's tastes differ.
So how do we tap into that, if we're dirty, underhanded, and most-of-all cheap bastitches?
Throw a RockBand party! Everybody is groovin' to the tunes. Everybody is having a good time. Everybody is in love with the game. Then connect to the online store, and show them the content. Bemoan the fact that you'd *love* to show them this tune, or that tune, but you just can't afford to buy 'em all.
Now, I don't know about you, but when I go to a party I will *always* bring something. It is no skin off my nose to buy some drinks, or some food, etc.
So if my host shows me some great tunes, and I notice that there is a Police Pack for $5.50, I am going to spring for it right then and there, download that puppy as a gift to him, and set to playing! He can keep it, I don't care! It is a one-time fee of 5 bucks for me, to keep the party going, for me to hear one of my favourite bands from my teenaged years in this cool new game in a party environment, where I can make an ass out of myself trying to sing like Sting or play drums like Stewart Copeland.
Now multiply that by twenty guests.
We've all got our favourite musicians, our favourite music, and our favourite bands. I won't buy every single song for myself, but I'll gladly buy *you*, my friend, a one-time gift for two bucks. No big deal.
Heck, you could even make it part of the invitation! Instead of BYOB it'll be BYODLC!
Let 'em know that, for 2 bucks, they can pick the song of their choosing, or the band of their dreams from the list of DLC. As the night wears on, I imagine that some people will go to that particular well two or even three times, just to be nice guys, and to hear some of the other stuff that is out there.
Oh, sure, maybe you can't actually access credit card information and such, so you throw a hat or a jar or a collection plate next to the game console, and you just take a cash collection. You make a big deal out of it. "Jenny is buying the party a new song! Hurray for Jenny! Three Cheers for Jenny! What's your song?!" She throws in her two bucks, you watch the download start, and then you watch as she gets to play it first, with *her* choice of friends, and the fun continues.
I feel all sticky for even thinking of this ... but ... I mean ... all that "free" content to play afterwards ...

That's pretty clever, but since my Live account has my CC information stored, my friends would probably just buy the DLC with my own money.

Devious.
I highly approve. Turning it into a cheap friendly impulse buy is just like getting your friends to chip in for the pizza -- takes the burden off yourself. :)

Yeah, this has been mentioned before, not that I blame you for not finding it.

Ewwwww, gross...

... Man I had this image in my head, a really old man holding out a jar. "Put some money into the little jar and we can play even more, hee hee." And that made me laugh my ass off :D. Good idea though

That's good thinking. Almost as devious as the time I convinced a friend to get Guitar Hero 2 even though I knew he'd hate it.
Two weeks later I had my second guitar for co-op. ^^

sounds like a plan. In order to play rock band at my house you MUST bring me $20 MS points cards!

I am glad this was just a crazy (I mean that in the nicest way possible) scheme, instead of an exploit. I thought I was going to have to delete this thread.

I thought the same thing when I saw the thread...I was like "Oh no...here we go"
But I was pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, a DLC exploit would suck.
P.S. - Can I have root access to the DLC server? ;)

I prefer "Wacky Antics" to crazy scheme. Or perhaps "Divers Alarums".
But no exploit. Nope.

QFT... They have a hard time at a BYOB, so I doubt they would BYODLC!

Like sharing *********** accounts?
See how I covered myself there?
The only problem with a Rock Band party is you know that somebody is giong to want to do the Marty McFly, so before you know it, some guy is laying on the floor, playing guitar, sliding himself along using his feet, and then suddenly the wire gets pulled, yanks the 360 off of your entertainment center, it smashes onto the ground, and the $20 you saved on DLC is lost in needing a new 360.
And the PS3 wireless folks aren't in the clear, because the wireless guitar invites itself to people trying to jump around off couches and one person who had a little too much to drink is bound to crash through the coffee table, and snaps the neck of the guitar, and you're SOL. Good thing the drums are fun enough on their own.

Well, yes, and while that may be true, we're all responsible for our own acts, aren't we?
"You break it, you bought it" is one of those rules of life, along with "There ain't no such thing as a Free Lunch".
If you go to *any* party, and act like a moron, and break my coffee table, you buy me a new one. If you are dancing while chemically enhanced, and trip and fall through somebody's TV, you (and possibly any *really* supportive friends of yours) chip in together and buy a replacement.
If somebody does a "Marty McFly", and a piece of equipment winds up broken, then they are responsible (chemical/hormonal/chi/biorhythm/horoscope imbalances are no defense) and it is time to whip out your honour-restoration-device (read: wallet) and make restitution.
We're all free to be goofs in this life. So long as we clean up our messes when we're done.

Oh, it's still an exploit. Only we're exploiting our friends and family, not Harmonix. :D Muwaahahahahaa. *evil hand rubby together gesture*

True, but it's not always easy to get people to pay for things. That's why I never lend friends money, because it only strains the relationship. Plus, I'm older now, and if my friends ever need money, something must be wrong with them. If it was something completely intentional, and careless, that caused something to break, then sure. But if it was in the context of having a good time, then that's not so easy.
Also, in less intentional situations, there's really nothing you can do. How do you tell that random dude that showed up with one of your friends to stop hitting the drums so hard, or stop smacking the strum bar with such a mighty force? You would just be a party pooper.

funny thing with this plan is, i already had it. I have a friend who complained about the prices, andI tried, i really did, to get him to see it really isnt that bad of a deal (especially to me). Being the only RB owner in my group of friends, if they want to play that song, they will have to convince me to buy, or pony up. Now which do YOU see as likely?:p

I love exploiting friends!! *laugh*
I think I'm going to have a "Bar/Rock Band Stocking" party. I'll ask everyone to bring a bottle of their favorite booze to stock my new bar with, and a little $$ to help stock the DLC in Rock Band. *evil grin*
It's the best of both worlds!!
