My Electronic Gaming Monthly had a paragraph in the rumored section today that says Activision is close to signing the Beatles to exclusivity for GHWT. What is your reaction?

Yeah Beatles have no place in either game in my opinion. But the Q rumored section as they call it is quite often soon to be true news more often than not. I have had EGM since mid 90's got every issue. Trust me they are most accurate game magazine out there.

Two main problems with EGM Rumor Mill:
1. It's a rumor mill. Right there in the title they are saying "Someone told us this and we ran with it."
2. EGM is notortious for being biased. If they like a series of games, the new game in that series will get a good review even if the game is crap. If they dislike a console, they will give games on that console bad reviews. They might just like Guitar Hero more than Rock Band (lolwut) and decided to make up this rumor to get more people to go to their side or something.

c'mon, the game is what it is. Harmonix/MTV has every opportunity to play the game by the rules that exist. They have the money and obviously have or have had the opportunity to sign all those bands, including the Beatles. If they are willing to pass up on great bands (The Beatles), once great bands (Metallica) or bands with a few great songs (Van Halen) over some faux moral high road, so be it. I don't plan on missing out on any of it, as I'll be playing both games. I'll just say it's a shame that they didn't do more to get those bands in the better of the two games.

Being a musician I know plenty about melody, harmony, and musicianship. I can appreciate their influence on music but that doesn't mean I have to like them. I've heard most if not all of their songs having grown up around it. I just can't stand them. Jerk.

Let's certainly hope you were just kidding. I think Muse is considerably more fun to play than to listen to, plus the fans I've met are generally annoying and think they are the hottest thing since sliced bread. I can kind of get why people like them, but I can also kind of get why people like Dream Theater, yet I can't seem to bring myself to listen to their music for anything more than a mere distraction when there's nothing else around.

The Trees, it's a politically conscious song with a message that works at the symbolic level in a way Imagine certainly does not. And I recall saying nothing about The Beatles influence, technically or otherwise, simply that they are an inferior band both lyrically and instrumentally to Rush and are severely overrated by their fan base.

I don't know about that... most of what the Beatles are known for are catchy choruses, Hey Jude, Sgt. Imagine may seem a bit generic today, but when it was released, the lyrics were quite shocking, and very creative. Spirit of the Radio is a bit on the cheesy side.

still doesn't compare. What about A Day In The Life? The Beatles were very subtle and you could interpret what they meant in various ways. Also, many Rush songs sound exactly the same to the point where you could call them the ACDC of prog rock. You can't at all say that about the Beatles. Really though many people think Rush overplay. There is something to be said about playing to the song rather than trying to fit in as many notes as you can.
That said I think Rush fit in this game better than the Beatles even though I really prefer the Beatles to Rush to listen to.

Still doesn't compare, great explanation of why it doesn't compare. Maybe you just don't feel like typing, oh but all those lines after mean that's not true. So now we just want to throw out song titles? Okay. Bastille Day is a song about a historic event, yet it's written in such a fashion that it can be interpreted in various ways. Once again, I reference the beautiful writing in The Trees, a song of its time that still is very much relevant today, and open to interpretation.
As for the claim of all their songs sounding the same, do you have ears? Tom Sawyer hardly sounds like The Trees, which hardly sounds like Fly By Night, which hardly sounds like Subdivisions, which hardly sounds like The Larger Bowl. Please, that's a very flawed argument. And they most certainly don't jam notes in needlessly. Also, it doesn't hurt the quality nor does their playing hurt the power of the lyrics.

Well, even if they do..
HMX would probably go a similar way they did with GNR.
I don't know if the old GNR is only in GHIII, and that they can't get old songs because Slash owns part of them, but I've heard that several times, but it shouldn't be taken as fact here, but it supports my statement..(Again, I have no idea if this is true, but I've heard is so many times..)
So they got new GNR.
If they got The Beatles, they would probably try to get some George Harrison tunes from his days with The Beatles (Here Comes The Sun, Something, While my Guitar Gently Weeps).
I would be okay with that, as he is probably my favorite Beatle.
Plus they already got Dhani. Later.

If the Beatles go GH exclusive, that'd be a HUGE blow for HMX. Metallica, VH, the Eagles and Aerosmith are all huge bands, but seriously, The Beatles are the BIGGEST BAND EVER. HMX/EA can't let this happen.

Even if not much of the Beatles catalog is playable for GH or is geared towards music games in general, this simply cannot happen. The name recognition itself would pretty much secure GH the title of best-selling music game and that would sink Harmonix.

I don't think I understand the question or if you were poking fun at Dylan's songs, Rush's, or neither. Either way, I think the easiest answer is drawing a comparison to something else, namely poems, which the songs essentially are. In that sense, I'm perfectly capable of reading, appreciating, and enjoying Poe just as much as I am able to enjoy Whitman. Now even in such a comparison I have an opinion about who is far and away the better and more interesting writer, just as I do with the respective song writers, but just because the subjects, and even the messages in song, may be different does not take away from my appreciation, enjoyment, and/or admiration for the lyrics.

Personally I don't care for the beatles. I just wonder if they would sell the game like they think it would. By and large it's my parent's generation that would care the most about the beatles being in a game, but on the other hand they would care the least about the beatles being in a game. I know that there are quite a few younger fans of the beatles, but I think that the people who grew up with the beatles dwarf those that grew up gamers. I just think that the generation divide on games will show up where the beatles won't be the holy grail they are supposed to be on say the digital song download front. (i.e. My dad "gets" MP3's. My dad doesn't "get" RB or GH.)

I've been reading EGM for years, and I don't see how someone can call them biased... Anyway, that's not what this thread is about.
The rumor is PROBABLY true, but it sucks. Reason being, Activision got The Wings, if I remember correctly, as the name shows up in that "Be a something hit wonder" ad. Paul McCartney is part of the Wings, part of the Beatles, and thus, Activision gets The Beatles. Not to mention they got Michael Jackson, who HAD the rights to The Beatles for a long while.
Which sucks. Horribly, horribly sucks. HMX needs to get a good relationship going with Ringo Starr. ;)
Also: To everyone mention how much The Beatles wouldn't fit, go listen to Helter Skelter, Revolution, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps now, now, now.
But, if everything else fails, HMX needs to get this:

Actually, the point is that I'd never actually listened to Rush lyrics, and that I've been truly astonished by their quality.
Not in a good way.
Art is subjective, it's all a matter of opinions, etc, etc, but, as far as poetry goes, you can hardly do more straightforward metaphor than "The trees". It's about as insightful and subtle as a 50's sci-fi movies (and using, basically, the same metaphor).

From what I gather, you're missing the open-endedness of the song. I suppose the simplest question to see if this idea is correct would be, are the penultimate and the ultimate lines good or bad? Happy or sad? In it's basest form neither one is correct, both positions are supportable, and that's figured out without even asking what the trees are a metaphor for, at the time the song was written and in modern society. It's not all about the complexity, but the presentation and the sense found in ambiguity. Look at the poem "Not Waving But Drowning" in comparison, it's a seemingly simple concept that one can easily take at face value but then the work is done a great disservice.

This is clearly closed, and explicit :
So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.
Happy or sad? In it's basest form neither one is correct, both positions are supportable, and that's figured out without even asking what the trees are a metaphor for, at the time the song was written and in modern society.
Obviously, a "sad" ending, with a straightforward message :
Equality is a bad thing.

Well, slightly too simplified... try "equality by force or coercion is a bad thing" or "one group of individuals conspiring to impose limitations on another is a bad thing".
